Thank you, thank you, thank you.......What a beautiful instrument and I do mean the voice. This is a wonderful example of a singer, one who sings with expression and sympathy towards both the music and the libretto. It is less about vocal range and more to do with dexterity and emotional involvement. I loved this, and again I want to work on this for performance even though it's written for the male voice and I am a mezzo soprano. The song is written to be sung. Thank you once again
Would have liked a little less pedal by the pianist (the voice is supposed to be accompanied by a lute). Björling just out of another world. His German is wonderful.
What a singer of "Schwermut"! This demands a soaring, painful sweetness of the voice itself paired with perfect voice control. In this way, the excruciating pain of the heart is expressed by repression. Passion and emotion are shown within the voice itself, not with the voice. This is a totally different way of emotional singing than the Italian masters use.Another great example: Richard Tauber. Maybe it mirrors the different way of showing emotion you can find in southern and northern Europe?
@1000bestmusic Yes indeed. I love Pieter-Jan's (Wiener knabensanger) interpretation too. I particularly the changes in volukme and tempo. This is my favourite Schubert Lied and Erlkonig is a close second.
Interessting live recording. The studio recordings of Jussi singing Ständchen I´ve heard is in higher key. A bit too slow this, the piano background losses its "enchantingness" (can´t find the word I´m thinking). What key did Schubert originally write it in?
Well, personally, I think it's beautiful, whether the recording quality is suspicious to you or not! I've never heard of this singer before, but he does have a gorgeous, passionate voice, and this is one of Schubert's most heartbreaking songs.

This is no doubt Bjorling, but it is not exactly his style... The reason his voice sounds dark is because he is singing in German (a very hard language to sing)
But recording tecnique is not in top form. Listen to those who where lucky enough to witness his recital in person. They are all in awe of Jussis brilliant singing!!
This song by Bjorling reminds me of a line from the film American Beauty. "... so much beauty... I feel like I can't take it, like my heart's going to cave in."

What a devastating combination: one of Schubert's darkest songs and Jussi's plangent voice.

i wonder if this is really Jussi i think this is fraud the recording seems to modern to be him and also the voice seems to dark
Brachiale 2 years ago
This is Jussi.
Recording was taken from an RCA lp Bjoerling at Carnegie Hall. The sound is actually better than what is demonstrated here.
I don't know a singer with a more beautiful sound.
Every note sounds free. Not easy when singing German.
I don't know a singer who brings in a better way the MOOD of this song.
The opinion of a Dutch Jussi admirer.
