@Sammy1AM If everyone donated a shit-ton of floppy drives, and some cases for you to stack them up in so you could move them like huge stacks of Marshall amps, live concert? :P
@Sammy1Am Just had the idea from the way they're stacked in computers while thinking about those standing warmers in bakeries. It'd kinda be a pain in the ass to put together, would pull a lot of power for one computer to handle i'd think. Wanted to share the thought. Didnt mean to cause intimidation :s
@cockroachbalogna No no, scary in an awesome sort of way. I mean to stand in front of a tower of computer parts and wires playing music would be crazy. I've got a welder, so I could custom-make a rack or something, and some people online have pointed out that I only need a 5v power supply. It's a great thought actually; one I will keep in mind.
@nNexusOne I've been getting that request a lot, so I'll start doing a separate audio recording on future videos for higher-quality downloads. I'll be re-doing Korobeiniki in stereo with 8 drives soon too; stay subscribed and you'll see it soon. =)
@42f87d89@masterofthecontinuum Yeah, okay. It won't be til after Christmas probably though. I'm going to try to get a nice tutorial together and clean up the software for MIDI files first.
I'll try to remember to come back and tell you guys.
@EFmw2clan This video actually has disks in the drives (you can just barely see the red, white, and green colors). I recently tried without disks and it's actually a little louder without them (I think they act to dampen some vibrations).
@Sammy1Am Maybe tightly fastening the drives to a wooden surface, say, the inside of a shallow box, would serve as a resonator to make the sound louder.
@frotz661 Thanks for the idea, I might toy around with that at some point. My new rig with 8 drives has the drives centered around a gap so that at least I can put the microphone sort of right in the middle of all of them.
Have extra drives and out midi melody to them so you hear the melody better.. Am I normal for a 14 year old? Or do I think I know too much? I like drives and shit and building pc's and experiment with simple arduino
@killerhobo97 Does it really matter? "normal" is just another word for "boring", as far as I'm concerned.
I'm 17, and I too like messing around with floppy drives, and other various old electronics stuff (LaserDiscs! old gaming consoles! weird videotape formats no-one's used in years!)
@spacehelmetforacow Have you been able to find any Sony Betamax or 8-track cassette devices? I find those old magnetic media devices interesting, as well. 'Normal' is only boring if you haven't taken it apart or modified it yet; all of these devices have hidden treasures or functionality inside. Or magic smoke, which emerges if you do something wrong. lol
Better than the flight of the bumblebee one, only prob is that the harmony really overpowers the melody. Not sure how you would go about fixing that tho...
@mickydoos Floppy disks store information on circular 'tracks', under normal operation, the read-head from the drive moves back and forth one track at a time. The pitches in the video are made by switching tracks at a certain frequency. So while this would represent some very-heavy disk usage, it shouldn't destroy the motors too quickly since it's more or less 'normal' operation.
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, this is exactly why being a nerd is awesome. <3 Dear Mr. Sammy1AM, you, sir, are made of win.

@Sammy1Am Is it possible for you to do an extended version when you get around to it? 1:08 is not nearly enough time to fully enjoy the sound!

You should insert floppies inside, that would make it sound much louder.
