If wer're going to blame Americans for the Philippine's current situation. Heck let's blame Spain as well . They were just as bad and even worse than Japan. Btw, screw Japan. Let's also blame the Akkadians for raiding the Sumerians, the French for invading Spain and Italy. Also blame Hitler for killing the Jews. The Jews are our fellow christians. And let's not forget Saddam and other dictators in the middle east.
The Americans were mostly responsible for the destruction of Manila by bombing the city. Likewise, the use of artillery was indiscriminate in bult-up areas. After 1945, The Pearl of the Orient did not recover its pre-war glory.
Every country that is involved in a war, unfortunately, gets her cities destroyed. Decades later, I see japan, poland, germany, china etc are doing well? But what about the Philippines? Corruption and Poverty isn't doing any good. No wonder that glory hasn't been recovered!
@charizu20 I think it was a mistake to seek independence in 1946, at a time when the Philippines should have been taking advantage of the marshall Plan for reconstruction.
@tom721100 This was the result of Tydings-McDuffie Act of 1934 that granted the independence of RP in ten years' time. But they did not forsee WWII in the Pacific so in accordance to that act whether or not Manila was severely damaged or not, US had to grant independence.
@dietcoke1996 The Japanese were under orders to burn the city.
In addition, it was the choice of the Japanese to try to hold out against the Americans, rather than surrender. In addition, they executed, under orders, many philipinos.
@tom721100 Yup, the enemy under Admiral Iwabuchi dug in in Intramuros and the surrounding areas of Manila to fight to the last man. The Americans have yet to perfect MOUT doctrine learned in Europe so they bombed these areas to flush the enemy. We may never know how many Filipinos died from aerial bombing and artillery fire as much as the number executed wantonly by the Japanese hold- outs. Warfare is evolving; precision guided munitions and MOUT now precludes horrendous civilian casualties.
@ouano1 Ungrateful for the rape and unheard of murder in Subic? Or you mean those massacres in Mindanao? tell me, for which one am I supposed to be grateful for? Or that the changes in the 1987 philippine constitution is in faovr of the USA? Tell me, what am I supposed to be grateful for? And what makes you think I know nothing about histroy or the military? Do you know me?
@GaolisVideoLog sorry but the subic rape case is a matter to get US visa by the rape victim. he seduce lcpl daniel smith to fuck her and then charge him with rape, and finaly she get a visa...
@kababayanC2 " Why was the footage of dead people consisting of Filipino civilians?" That was the Manila Bombing. The Americans decided to bomb the city, just like Dresden. By doing so they destroyed all of Manila, killing both Japanese and Filipinos alike. They didn't care, that's why you see those dead Filipino civilians there.
Thank you America for liberating my country in '45. You liberated my country that is why I am alive today and proudly served in the US military in return for my gratitude. Thank You. God Bless America.
Our soldiers just arrived late, as they hve tofight every inch in the city..My father is one of the USAFE soldiers who fight against the Japanese. Sad to say he died in late 60th but never received compensation with the US.
It's unfortunate, at least from what I've seen from my young cousins living in Manila, I don't think the government teaches enough history about what happened. It's ashame that the Filipino government invests so much money in building all these ridiculous oversized malls and other wasteful projects in the city when they need to really focus on piecing together Intramuros (the assholes in charge of the place should have their asses fired). Intramuros STILL looks like crap!
It wasn't the government who built these supersized malls, We are not a planned economy like north korea but a capitalist.. It's not a shame because they indicate a good economy
Go ahead and read on some economics :)
Intramuros isnt crap.. Rebuilding intramuros would be great but the ruins of old intramuros serves as a reminder of what had happened 65 years ago for us to remember the deeds of those who fought the war..it makes sense that some ruins are better kept that way
@Stevenimich (Pt.1) Intramuros was destroyed by the Americans & was sold under the Estrada to the USA. The entire phil. school curriculum is focused on the USA. That's why all lessons have to be done in English & we have to memorize stuff like the "Gettysburg Address", even though that has no connection to the Philippines whatsoever. Most Filipinos of my generation don't even know who Ninoy Acquino is but can name many of the 50 states. All our nat. resources, gold oil etc. belong to the USA also
@GaolisVideoLog (part 2) We can point fingers at the Americans for excessive use of artillery (but you see, there were really no rules then in regards to historic value and such and such a so forth... those were very ignorant times and the Americans DID LEARN from the mistakes in the use of heavy artillery when fighting urban warfare cause it was this battle that lead them to change the way urban warfare is to be fought and is applied today - i.e. Baghdad).
@Stevenimich (Pt.2) Due to the Visiting Forces Agreement, US GIs can't be held responsible for crimes commited on phil. soil, causing rape & killing done by US soldiers in the Phils against Phils.. Apart from that, in 1987 the constitution was changed. It now states that the nat. flag looks the way it does as a sign of gratitude towards the USA, even though it was used against them. I could go on, but I think you're getting the pic, right? The Phils. don't invest into history, coz of the USA
@GaolisVideoLog (part 2) So, the ULTIMATE responsibility in the cause of the destruction of Manila are the Japanese. Don't forget, when they bombed Pearl Harbor, they also bombed Manila (destroying several historic buildings in Intramuros). BEFORE the Battle for Manila started, the Japanese had already planned a complete and total destruction of the city with no regard to human life as well.
@GaolisVideoLog Marine lance corporal Daniel Smith was held for almost 4 years, albeit at the US Embassy, on charges of rape. The victim recanted, received money, and a visa to the US.
My grandparents and my moms brothers and sisters survived the massacres. I've been able to research and piece together what happened when the Japanese began killing everyone in Paco-Pandacan areas. I know one of my aunts had kept a grudge against the Japanese up until her death recently. My uncles and aunts always lamented about how destroyed Manila was after the war and that it has not been the same since.

During Marcos time, Philippines is one of the most respected nation in the southeast region bec of our better economic status, aggressiveness for future devts and military power. Pagtapos ni Marcos nag-simula ng pag-hihirap ng bansa ang presyo ng bilihin nag-increased ng more than 50% nun panahon ni Cory at lumala pa hanggang ngayon.

Yes colewagon, Quezon declared Manila an open city in 1942 when the Japanese invaded. Quezon was already dead in 1945.
Yamashit fled to the mountain ranges of northern Luzon as the US started bombing Manila, ahead of the arrival of their troops. Our historians (ie. people living in Manila at the time) said the American bombing wreaked more destruction.
The Japanese, on the other hand, are "credited" with the wholesale rape and execution.
the japanese educational system does not teach young japanese students what really happened during the war. i've met many young japanese in their twenties and the atrocities that were committed by their elders are not known to them. it is sad that japan still does not want to admit the atrocities they did in the philippines, china and the other countries they occupied.
My Father fought there. He help liberate the prisoners at Santo Tomas University. He fought in the ball park, post office, and Intramuros before he was shot. The Japanese killed more civilians than died in Hiroshima.
Yes, second only to Warsaw. This was confirmed by war historians from RP, the US, Australia, New Zealand and Canada when we celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War in the Philippines a few years ago.
Yeah...well the Japanese were baddies no doubt, but America was protecting their interest in the Philippines. Even with the Spanish American War how the Americans and Spanish struck a deal and then led the Filipinos on in a "phony war." Always remember to read between the lines, cause there is always an alterior motive. Take care
The Japanese should have surrendered the city like the Americans did in 1942 but NO, the Japanese had to fight to the last man- and killing as many Filipinos as they could while they were at it. The Japs hid everywhere. In the urban warfare that ensued, American artillery probably did the most damage. They didn't want to send troops in to clear buildings/neighborhoods so they used artillery. It was like Iwo Jima but in a city. Sad.
this is surreal to me.....I teach judo beside the rizal stadium, I pass by the pasig river bridge sometimes and I went to school in Intramuros. The very ground I walked on......
Manila was the 2nd most devastated city during WWII. The atrocities committed by the Japanese soldiers is still felt by surviving WWII veterans of the Philippines
Intramuros where TONS TONS TRUCKS LOADED OF GOLD DIAMOND are BURIED BY JAPANESE NAVY MARINE STOLEN from all over ASIA Central Bank Brought to the PHILIPPINE ISLANDS
at the end of the battle, the americans lost 1000 men killed and thousands more wounded, the jap garrison of 25,000 was virtually annihilated but the greatest tragedy of all was suffered by the civilians living in the city. 100,000 civilians died mainly because of the atrocities committed by the japs. the only urban battle of WWII in the pacific.
