Rapalas are good crankbaits, but for the money, I could buy two Walley Divers and catch just as many fish.
My personal record was 41 walleye (I had to release most of them, of course) caught on a chartreuse and orange Walley Diver. My buddy had a perch colored Shad Rap which wasn't catching nearly as many.
Nothing against Rapala, as they work pretty well, but with as many snags as you get in South Dakota lakes, I'll take a lower priced lure.
@wharghoul Same with mucky lures, over prices when the small stuff works better any way...I started making my lures for at least 20 times cheaper..In my case fishing for Muskie, plastics work better than hard baits, 10 to one
@KidsKicksforChrist If you learn how to tie bucktails, you can make good lures for next to nothing. Crankbaits have their time, but it's rare indeed when you can catch fish with cranks and not spinners. I run hand tied spinners and jigs now, and I can make them for cents instead of dollars. Just don't cheap out TOO much and run the synthetic hair. They don't swim like real bucktails.
@gorillaz2424 Here in NW ohio I live half an hour from a Gander Mountain, and Bass Pro Shops, and about 45 to 50 minutes from the Cabelas in Michigan. The said part is that there aren't many instate lakes in this area, just small (Under 55 Acres) resevoirs.
Fine for stupid fish and/or anglers. Having said that, the old Blue Fox spinning minnows were ok. But they had a decent spinner on a decent body and were a reasonable size.
It's all about margin these days. Not fishing. Wish they'd stop with the puns and soundbytes in the promos. And add some barbless and/or single hook options. Pref not just rubber for bass/pike/eyes. Something that'll catch real fish. Most lures that'll catch 'smarter' species like trout will catch the rest. Not vice versa
No, until we get to the point that we shock the water to stun the fish and bring them to the top by the dozens, THEN we'll have gone too far. This is just another evolution in bait. I mean er... evolution in marketing ploys.

That's some cool footage!
I got a big school of Largemouth Bass on tape by using a cheap, easy to build underwater camera housing.

You could buy Rapalas with a blade on the front for decades. Blue Fox minnow spin.
