Lightwave, Maya, 3D Studio Max, Are wonderful at full price, buy one at a discount with student ID if you can.
For hobbyists and a casual game edit. Try Blender or GameStudio. play withit in the editors or tweak it and play with it in an Unreal Tournament 3 or Crysis SDK..
Modeling is fun but it takes planning, patience and more time than most care to admit. No point in spending hundreds of dollars unless you know you'll like modeling.
If you purchase it under a student discount (which requires that you possess the appropriate proof), it costs €150. The standard retail version costs €800.
@troy2062 I agree, NewTek has been very good to independents and amatuers and their boards are a lot friendlier to newbies (unlike some forums that try and make it seem that anything you wish to do takes decades of experience.) I believe in supporting people who support the filmmaking community.

Ok, so it's been 1 and a half years since you've uploaded this. I have a question. Out of Maya, Max, and LightWave, which one would you consider now to be more user friendly?
I now consider them to be equal in terms of interface design. For a relatively early-stage learner, Maya may be somewhat intimidating in the beginning, however it is in fact very intuitive. LightWave and Max both have very clean interfaces, which tend initially to feel more friendly.
There is no doubt that Maya is the more capable of the three in terms of physics, particle effects and animation. I have yet to sufficiently explore its modeling facilities to accurately judge them.
very nice tutorial but lightwave is not so friendly like maya and max, especially not for beginners. If any one is interested in 3d animation\modeling he\she should use maya or max not lightwave
Thanks for the tutorial However you are sometimes difficult to understand.
Slow down and enunciate your syllables. You're running the end of words and the begining of other words together. Don't take for granted how much your audience knows. Not everyone has used 3D studio Max.
This is the worst modelling program I have ever seen, it's a crime to ask money for this. All I want to do is open a scene which contains 200 objects or so, and export the whole thing as a single .obj - something that can be done in 2 clicks with decent software like Maya or Max but this junk is just driving me crazy. If anyone knows the anwser I'd greatly appreciate it. :/
I am not showing the magnifying or move tools on the far top right of the layout. I can't move and drag the scene like the video shows. what button brings it back?
Have you attempted to ensure that you are currently viewing the "Perspective" and not "Camera"? The viewport tools will be greyed-out if you are viewing the camera.
You will find the view selection menu below the "Items" tab.
I have it on perspective and next to that vertices. Must be something I hit somewhere. All I show is the first box with a small sizing type grid on it, the next two are blank and the last has a magnifying glass. On the top right panel that is. When I try dragging the scene to move up or down, it won't happen. can't figure. If only there were a button to reset all settings in case I changed one.
First of all: Nice Tutorial :)
Looks a little bit like an older Version of Blender...

@joe5178
I personally think that lightwave's interface is MUCH easier to use than maya or max
Note this is the first 3d modeller i have used
you just have to get the proper training very good tutorials on this one site

@joe5178
In my experience, LightWave has been just as user-friendly as Max, and significantly more so than Maya.
troy2062 1 year ago
@troy2062 definetely more than Maya, it's awful. i don't know about max-lw comparison i've just started with lw

A few weeks ago I would have agreed; however as I have begun to learn Maya recently, I have actually found the interface to be very intuitive. :)

@troy2062 I don't know really, I quit Maya after i made my first scene and tried to render it, it completely pissed me :D

@joe5178 for maya and max you must pay....
