Here's something that's a personal experience. I have been racially abused in Australia and the UK in the short time I spent there. I have never had anything as close to bad as that happen to me in South Africa. SA has come far in 17 years and how welcoming saffers are reflects this. Great video bru!

The CIA World Factbook AND the Economist Human Development Index BOTH discuss the high crime rate in South Africa as a motivating factor in low development/quality of life/safety scores. The CWF even states that South Africa has more murders by firearm than any other country in the world outside of war torn countries - per capita. It's beautiful and has amazing culture, but pretending the crime is normal would be a lie.

It all depends on where you go, I live in Stellenbosch for excample. It's completley safe for me and a few friends to walk around the city. Maybe not in the dark, but what city is so safe that highschool kids can walk around on their own in the dark?

They shouldn't go to London, it's not a good representation of England or the UK. It's just one city out of many. There is no nice national parks nearby. It's expensive. It's no longer British (it's over-run by non Britons). British people leave it for foreign immigrants. There are no nice little country pubs. There are no passionate people like in the cities of Newcastle, Liverpool or Leeds. There is no beautiful coastline. Get to the UK but go to some nice areas for god sake. Pisses me off.

Very laid back, relatively inexpensive (except Harrogate, it's pretty much London prices), and very friendly. People won't stop and talk to strangers (not usually), but people will often acknowledge people in the street and maybe give a nod. Oldham......never been, never been a fan of North West England (except the beauty of the lake district and of the city of Lancaster).
