@98bigbutt The name Istanbul was created in the 10th century as a paraphrase of the greek phrase eis ten Polin (εἰς τὴν Πόλιν) = To the City. Until 1923 the city was mostly called Kostantiniyye, only the commons used to call it Istanbul. Anyway, you are wrong when you say that the sultans renamed it after the conquest: the name Istanbul wasn't created by the sultans and the official renaming took place in 1923.
When the Ottoman Turks took the city in 1453,the Ottoman sultans called it Istanbul and it was called that ever since.
