Beyond the evident signification of this song ( and this movie ) that reveal the deterioration in the relation between people who live in the Parisian suburb and the autoritity, and more generally between people and governement, you see the uneasiness of those people to fit belong the "common" (what it say) french society.
This movie reflect the issue of different culture that affects us nowadays (but 15 years after the movie). This is not a question of a foreigner culture but a "suburb" cultur

You probably didn't visit the Parisian suburbs. The movie reflects on the way of live in these suburbs. The problems in the suburbs that exist today also existed 14 years ago.
Exactly. No tourist would visit these area, and most Frenchmen I knew had never visited these areas. In 1997, this movie taught me that in the "civilized" world, the "have-nots" are hidden and ignored.
That same year I met a French college student in NY. When he heard that I spoke French, he asked "did you see this movie?"
I said "yes" and he said "good, everyone here thinks I wear a beret and carry a bottle of wine everywhere."

When my friends and I watched this film in 1997, we were all wondering...
1. What the fuck is this?
2. Where the hell is this?
When a Francophone roommate recognized it as French, were were all thinking "this looks nothing like Paris the last time I visited!
Perhaps this film was a warning of the trouble that was coming 10 years later?
