Mike Campbell gets nowhere near the recognition he deserves....and Tom Petty is just plain BAD-ass..one the most charismatic band-leaders I've ever seen live..right up there with Mick Jagger...rock til ya drop, shit-kickers! ; )
I know for fact that MIKE CAMPBELL is the World`s GREATEST GUITARIST. And the Heartbreakers is the Greatest Band out there. They take all songs to the biggest level.:):) Now band can top this Cover.
ippon561 Love it with old Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac.Have bin playing it often, since it came out,and Fleetwood Mac was my favorite group, have nearly all of their music fro the old good days.I got a good surprise when I heard this version with Petty.Harder and good musischen.LOVE IT.Is there any out there who can tell me how to get this on record or dvd? Please
I heard the original version in 1970 when Peter Greene was still in Fleetwood Mac about 15 feet from the stage. Even the later versions of that group could not get close to the original (including other would be's as well).
But, now Tom and the Heartbreakers indeed step to the top. Mike certainly deserves that old Peter Green guitar...if he can find it!
best band ever and if you know someone that doesnt care for them..... take them to a concert and they will be blown away... theyll be instant fans of petty
Well... what would've been stellar is if TP had invited Peter Green to sit in on this one. He invited Nicks, and she had about as much to do with the groundbreaking version of FM as I did. And before you start hating on me, I LOVED and still listen to the Buckingham/Nicks duo album (before they joined FM) quite a bit. "Don't You Let Me Down Again" is one of my favorite songs of all time! But this would've been taken to the next level with Peter playing. I'm just sayin'...
Tom obviously loves this classic tune, and is still doing it on his Mojo tour! I enjoy all the versions of it, Fleetwood Mac, the Rockets, and TP's. I took some video of it from his Nashville show..but there others that turned out better...so I will try to get some posted soon.
Saw him in concert last night near Pittsburgh. I had never seen him in concert before and didn't realize that he did a cover of this song. The guy is is a pro, pure and simple. If you haven't seen him in concert before, you've got to make the effort to go see him. The place was packed and rockin'!! Nobody left, even when a thunderstorm rolled through the outdoor arena. Just imagine 20,000 people singing every lyric to every song. It was a great night!!
@apeach710 I always enjoyed his music but never thought that I would want to see him until I saw this concert from Gainesville on PBS. My sister told me that she saw him a few years ago and convinced me to go. I was surprised when he did it, and my friend didn't recognize the song. I told him that the old Fleetwood Mac did it (in the late 60's?) along with covers from a few more bands. Good times! They rescheduled for Aug 31st at Blossom Music Center near Akron, I may see that one also.
@holdemgti There rescheduled the Blossom show eh, might have to check that one out as well. Il be back at college by then, its only like a 40 minute drive from where il be at. i think he'll be even better there. Blossum In my opinion is a better place to watch a show then First Niagara in Burgettstown
another excellent version of this song was done by a band called "The Rockets" album called "Turn Up the Radio" released in 1979. Thats where I first heard it...love Petty's version of it too......great song!!
What I love about this version is that T.P., and Mike C. stuck to the original version's blueprint. Lindsey Buckingham was honorable attempting to play the part of two guitarists, but it can't be done. I have more respect for Rick Vito's '87 version vs. Lindsey's because Rick actually saw Fleetwood Mac at the Electric Factory in Philly/1968. Lindsey pretended to emulate Peter Green, at least Rick Vito saw him in person, and was a huge fan. TP's Sirius/XM show proves he's a PG fan.
what a FABULOUS post of a classic Mac song....Peter Green ~ so awesome....and Tom Petty is giving a kickin' cover here !!!! LOVE IT ~THANK YOU buzzardsluck !!!!!!!
I think TP&TH are the only band who ever came close to putting the song down with the feeling as Fleetwood Mac intended it. Seriously good stuff, this!
if it wasn't for the drums, this would be a phenomenal cover. Please just stick to, or at least close to, the original feel. the whole tempo of the song is changed, except for the solo part, that is excellent.
When referring to fleetwood mac , can we please Use the words
ORIGINAL FLEETWOOD MAC so as not to be confused with later incarnations of the band .
THE ORIGINAL FLEETWOOD MAC IS THE PETER GREEN BAND .
No disrespect to the later bands , Itis just getting annoying when people think Fleetwood mac (STEVIE NICKS and co) wrote all this great blues stuff ..
Right, well, Peter Green wrote it, anyway. . I meant I just just didn't like the 1987 lineup of Fleetwood Mac's version. (When Rick Vito & Billy Burnette were in the FM). My point was just that Tom Petty's guy do it better than that 1987 FM lineup
Peter Green was a God back in the F Mac days, but this is a pretty cool cover. Thanks buzzard. Oh Shit . . . and a little Page homage in there as I'm listening, too.
Tom Petty is a huge Peter Green fan. He plays a lot of his material (Mac and John Mayall) on his Buried Treasure radio show. Of all the cover versions out there, this is the best.
I prefer the original, but even so that was an awsome cover version... he brought a little of his own personality to the track while remaining honest to the original. Bravo! I am glad I listened.
Loved Led Zep and Iron Maiden as a twelve year old, then Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as well as Bob Dylan as a thirteen year old...thought I'd matured in my tastes that year. Now I'm confused 'cause this song is just so much like Black Dog. Guess ultimately my change in taste was about as radically different as a switch from Coke to Pepsi, yet at the time it seemed as vastly different as a change from one belief system to another! Crazy man.
Well, Led Zep got the inspiration for the breaks in Black Dog from "Oh Well" [Info from interview with Jimmy Page on the BBC's Classic Album radio series when discussing Led Zep IV]
Mike Campbell is freaking excellent. so under appreciated as a fine fine rock guitarist. when great rock guitarists are brought up he is hardly ever mentioned. that's so wrong.
Absolutely outstanding version of Oh Well. Tom Petty captures the spirit of what Mac were doing back in the sixties at the Oh Well stage in Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. The solo riff playing also captures Danny Kirwin's contribution to the original. Question; is that Jimmy Page in the dark suit, on the white Strat in front of the Vox stack? The playing sounds like him, but the camera doesn't stay on the player long enough.
