i find it hard to believe that this is a coincidence ...while he recycled melodies lyrics and ideas, this fits way too well not to be done on purpose....even the shaky chorus fits melodically with the switch to the diminished chords
We will never know if this is a coincidence or a tangible idea but the fact he has been gone for 9 years and people are still talking about it and making attempts at 'cracking the code' speaks volumes for the impact Elliott had on so many. Great idea, I liked it, and it could have very well been a work in progress. May his soul be at peace now and I am sure he would be happy to know his fans keep his music and memory alive.
This certainly is interesting. The melody of the verses very much fits the chords, which I had never realized. I don't really think that My New Freedom became See You in Heaven, though. MNF feels like a very complete song on its own, and the instrumentation of SYiH doesn't really feel compatible with the lyrical content. Or at least they bring out very different emotions in me.
@dreamerfadesawake Elliott reused lyrics from old songs all the time in completely new songs, and I feel like this might be a similar situation with the chord progression. He may have simply used the progression again (either knowingly or unknowingly) because it is a very natural one for his style. It’s always been really easy for me to pick out a song of Elliott’s just by chords—there’s just something about the way he writes songs, certain turns in shape or melody that are very much Elliott.
@dreamerfadesawake I find it believable that a progression would bear so much resemblance to one he has already written, and I don’t think it would feel like he ran out of things and was recycling. If the piano melody matched the melody of MNF more closely, I would believe this theory more readily. That said, thanks for sharing it. I really enjoyed weighing this idea, and though I'm skeptical, I certainly won't count it out.
I like how SYIH is sped up... can you upload that? (Without these mixed in vocals?).

You can go anytime you want
I won’t watch, it hurts too much.
If you stay, I promise you I’ll be
Better to you, better to me.
Don’t want to compromise your freedom,
Have a drink to you
‘Cause you made it new,
And I hate everyone I see,
Everyone, everything. .......
In conclusion, he was to leave.

is this really your mashup? Sounds similar to the attempt i did a few years back.
That is to say awful.
Not that there is any alternative, there isn't a clear enough live recording.

I really like the first thirty seconds, not of this specific mix, I've always like the beginning of See You In Heaven.
