  • My first flake was Irish flake about two months after I started smoking. I had a hard time keeping lit, and couldn't really get the flavor out of it because I was so busy relighting. However I have found a way to smoke it that is wonderful.

I take 1 and a half flakes and crumble them up, take a fair bit of cornell & diehl first responders, and mix it in with macbaren acadian perique. I smoke it in a bent MacArthur pipe from Missouri meerschaum. Very cool, tasteful smoke.

  • my go to is erinmore. its cheap in chicago, lovely, easy to carry around, and i never leave home without a tin. btw i wouldnt try irish flake if you dont have a high nicotine tolerance

  • you should be more specific in your title, i was trying to look at cereal...

  • I've always wondered what this was at the smoke shop. To be honest it smelled like road tar haha. It said "Heavy english"

  • Good video. I've been wanting to try that Erinmore Flake.

  • I have never tried a flake, but with these tips, I'm sure i will soon. Thx

  • haha roken is dodelijk nederland?

  • Thank you so much for an awesome video. I am fairly new to flake tobacco and this video is exactly what i was looking for.

  • My first flake was Peterson's University Flake. Enjoyed it. A little high on the vitamin N for me, but still a good smoke. Was curious what your thoughts were on following it up with Mac Baren's Navy Flake. Is that a good follow up to UF for a flake?

  • @gunner525 Mac B's NF is top, one of the most popular with pipe smokers, a little light on the Nic for me though. Orlik Golden Sliced is my go to flake, about the same nico level as Navy Flake. Give it a go. It's got a great price too.

  • @dubinthedam Have to say I loved the price. Got a 100g tin of NF for $8 US. Not a bad smoke. Have to say it was pretty enjoyable. Noticeable vitamin-N, but not overwhelming. Nice smooth cool smoke.

  • @gunner525 bargain, some find it a bit dry and bland, at $8 for 100g it's well worth it. It's still one of the most popular flakes out there.

  • God, I love pipe smoking!

  • may i ask why some pipes last way longer then some others?

  • @Mr420rush bigger bowls give a longer smoke. Small bowls 20-40 mins, medium 40 -60, large 1hr to 1 1/2hrs. Flakes are compacted tobacco so in a large bowl the smoke last a long time, hence most people who smokes flakes choose smaller bowled pipes.

  • @dubinthedam ahh ok thanks

  • @dubinthedam. Got those written down. Payday cant come fast enough now. Hahahah thanks for the suggestions

  • Rad videos my friend. Whats a good, bold style tobacco would you suggest? I smoke cigars quite often and want to try pipes now. I cant stand weak flavorless tobacco. I went straight for the bold cigars when i started smoking, and alot of tobacconists tryed steering me away with milder ones and i hated them. What do you like as far as flavor and boldness?

  • @trashpunker Irish flake and 3P's By Peterson, and Brown Twist No.4 by Sam Gawith, VA flake by Solani, they don't come much more real than these.

  • thanks for this video. i am about 3 weeks into pipe smoking and i just bought my first tin of Mac Baren Navy Flake. i'm very excited to try it out tonight and definitely going to be using your method of folding.

  • excuse me but , erinmore is not an aromatic !

  • @ilnokaly I don't mean to say, "I know better than you". But yes Erinmore is most certainly an aromatic, it has a strong casing of fruit and tea and is regarded by most, if not all, pipe smokers as an aromatic. Don't mean to offend.

  • Gave Univeristy Flake a try a few weeks ago. It's pretty good, but does pack a nicotine punch. Love the option to rub out or fold and stuff the flake however I want. Stayed lit a lot better outside than loose/ribbon cut tobaccos. Definitely something all pipers should give a try.

  • Dub, how do you a flake medallion? Fold and stuff or a real good rubbing out?

  • Very funny , keel over LOL!

  • The flake pipe, is it group 2?

  • @ChemistDrummer a typical flake pipe is about group size 2, but that's not to say that you can't smoke a flake in a large pipe, it will just last a long time and often bring more flavors.

  • Hi does anyone know the music from this video please it's very good and I would like to get it.

  • Would you please put the names of the flakes that you mention in the vid? Great vid btw.

  • Very useful video, thanks for that Pearse.

    Dan

  • hey Man

    Thanks for the inspiration.

I love several of them and look forward to get used to the Irish of wonderfull Peterson.

Living the Pipe way is the right way.

    Cheers

    Jens

  • Hey, love your videos! Any opinion on Anniversary Kake, Butternut Burley, and Trout Stream, if you have tried them? They are being shipped right now, I'm pretty excited!

  • hi great video and what is that good music

  • Nice video 5*, whats your opinion on erinmore flake?

  • @GreenFalc0n good flake, strong for an aromatic, but with a unique flavor

  • Hey there Dub, thanks for the video. FYI, I bought a tin of Orlik Golden Sliced the other day, and when I opened it in was in a large folded strip or wad, a little bit like the Marlin Flake you show in this video - despite the name, not 'Sliced' at all. Is this a new way they're doing it, do you know? I didn't see it mentioned in any reviews of OGS.

  • Where can one find one of those peterson pipes? I searched for flake pipes but to no avail I can not find any.

  • @pokiebaron usually a two or three months, any longer and you should put it in a mason jar (rubber band and metal clip jars)

  • PP, both are super blends, but escudo is slightly darker and browner VA's. Flake Medals is fruitier and with that sweet fizzy wine taste I talk about, my vote would actually go to Flake Med. But both are superb.

  • I wish we could still buy Capstan here in the US. I love Capstan Medium Navy!

  • thank-you

  • I'm with you Dub 90% of what I smoke is flakes and at about 12 bowls a day thats quite a bit

  • @TheeBlackAdder

    wow 12 yea a bit^^

  • Great videos, Dub.

I used your method to load some MacBaren Navy Flake and it fired up wonderfully.

    Cheers!

  • Where is the St. Bruno Flake!?

  • Hey Dub,

Thanks for the info. I have a tin of Penzance that I have been aging for about a year now that I might break open soon. It will be my 1st flake tabacco. I have been smoking for almost 10 years now and have never tried a flake tabacco yet. I look forward to the experience...

  • TP....I should warn you Penz is a crumble cake flake....this means it's very dry, you just break of small chunks and put in bowl...a bit like a coal fire.

  • Thanks for the heads up!

  • hi. i love your video's. i've started smoking pipe for almost 3 years now, and i have learned a lot by myself and with your videos. i'm thinking on trying flake tobacco. do you think the navy flake is a good option like everyone says it is? i like tobaccos that aren't to strong and with a nice aroma. what's the best choice? once again, thanks for the video

  • Hey Dub. I've been meaning to thank you. I recently bought my first tin of flake, and thanks to you, I now know how to properly pack it into my pipe. Thanks a bunch, you're fantastic.

    Cheers, Sebastian

  • Thanks! I've always just rubbed mine out completely. Now I'm going to try the fold.

  • I do the same with mine. Right now I'm using an old bend billiard with a slightly taller bowl. I'm in love with Esoterica Penzance. The flake itself is a bit narrower, I rub it like you do, and usually take half a flake, fold it over width wise, strip it, and rub it and lay it on top to fill the top of the pipe. It works great. Long live flake!

  • It's kinda like a razor knife, super sharp. Some of the head shops sell them here, I think the intended use is for chopping weed up, either that or non-fatal street fighting....good for plugs though!

  • another great video, I surely need to buy more flake.

    cheers tim

  • This is a very good video an how to load a flake pipe.

I smoke a lot of flakes and plug tobaccos.

I will definately try the thing with the tamper cause the tobacco on the walls where the only thing bothering me. Also I love the flake block in in that tin! That looks sooo delicious!

    Cheers,

    Alex

  • I tried it today with irish flake.

    It works perfect!

    Thanks and Cheers,

    Alex

  • Fantastic video. Learned a lot!!

  • Thanks Dub You're the man !

  • great video, thanks dub!

  • This technique worked wonderfully. Thanks!

  • Great video thank you for posting it. I have some Irish flake on the way I cant wait to try it! Thanks again.

  • Hello Dub! Great cognitive video again! I also like flakes and now my absolutely favorite Orlik Dark Kentuсky. The last time I tried it from the high and narrow bowl (chimney shape) aprx. 60x18 mm, it allows you to create a large airpocket. I highly recommend to try this way!

    Igor

  • Great videos lately dub. Loved this one. I have always struggled packing and keeping flakes lit, but I think this will help some of my problems.

  • Dub, I purchased some Luxury Bullseye after your recommendation last year some time. Two medallions in a pickax is favorite smoke. All the best, Chris

  • I hope it didn't let you down...I find a years age does it the world of good.

  • Finally! the longawaited flake-video! super!

  • great tip

  • Thanks Dub. I wa just about to give up on flakes .Now I will give them another Go.

    Chuck

  • Great video..

  • as usual superb vids mate,,could never agree more flakes plugs n twist r just amazing and to my taste they gv a longer smoother enjoyment to the taste

    5 stars

    cheers

    ahmad

  • awesome, ive really started to love flakes

  • Nice informative video. I like the new, more professional look too.

  • Thanks Dub, Just like Lefty I too picked up my first flake today and thanks to your video I realized why it was the driest smoke I have ever had... Apparently as you put it I have a flake pipe!

    Thanks again

    -Bricelyn

  • Dub, this couldn't come at a better time. I just picked up a tin of Irish Flake today (first time) and it is now my absolute all time favorite! Nice to see my approach to rubbing out the flake isn't too far off from yours.

I'm sold on the Flake! Maybe a little Navy after dinner. You should do a vid on "re hydrating" tobacco, I have one approach and I'm sure others would benefit fro your advice as well.

  • Halo dubinthedam!

Witch flake tobacco would you recommend for a new beginner pipe smoker?

    Love your videos!!

    //Simon

  • Mac Baren Navy Flake

  • Probably yes....the answers as to why is more difficult, I think americans may think it is less convenient, but actually it's much more convenient for outdoor use.

  • Dub, thanks for the info. I have found that the flake version of Mac Baren Mixture burns cooler than the ready rubbed and has a better, deeper flavor. Cheers.

  • Thank you Pearce, I have some flakes but have had a hell of a time figuring it all out. This helps. Cheers!

  • Most flakes I fold although when I have the marlin flake I completely rub that out because it always disintegrates anyway.

    Regards

    Domestic

  • It really is practice, finding what works best with each flake and pipe. For example on a windy day I would rub out less if smoking outdoors, sometimes I just fold three times if the baccy is very dry....dub

  • I have to agree that flakes are so much more luxurious to smoke as opposed to red rubbed tobacco.

seem to hold its moisture better, and flavors appear to be more married.

    great vid

  • Very well said Pops...more luxurious and flavors more married....but you can still buy plenty of Luxury flakes in Bulk at a good price, FVF, Best Brown, Erinmore, Vanilla Flake etc.

  • hi dub - thats a lot of information what you do with the flake - great!

what is your best favorite flake?

    cheers, matthias

  • Irish Flake....but strictly after lunchtime. I just had a bowl of that Marlin tin I open...boy it's good.

  • Dub,

Thanks for the tips. BTW, I too have a tamper similar to yours that also came from Sweden :).

    Best Wishes,

    Guillermo

  • Thanks, Dub. I'll have myself some Virginia Flake now and try out what I've just learned.

  • I like your style...go there.

  • Thank you for the informative video!

I've only recently tried flake tobacco and the hints are much appreciated.

  • Thanks Dub! Excellent video as always.

Do you treat, oh, let's say Luxery Bullseye Flake, the same way? Fold and rub?

Without tooting my own horn, I just have to say how pleased I am to see that tamper in action. It's gone from "abstract" to "tool". Love it!

    Cheers mate,

    Mike

  • Mike, I'll add in a link to your tamper page later. With Lux Bullseye, yes you more or less fold it the same way, depending on bowl size, one or two folds. Main thing is that you rub it and fluff it up plenty.

  • you have to try hollys discovery - va/latakia flake - good stuff.. lg. m.

  • Harry thanks for the tip...love your video's by the way....just subbed...dub

  • Thanks for posting the video. Great tips.
