Great band, although I haven't seen them for a while. I agree that they are terribly approachable, I had a great afternoon drinking with Peggy in the Half moon in Putney before a gig years ago. Nice guys and great musicians.
I was always led to believe this was an Irish song from hearing the also excellent Bothy Band version, however I recognize the tune here from Vaughan Williams' suite of English folk songs so I guess it must be English!
Yes, it's on Fairport Convention's Live 1997 Cropredy 3-CD set called
"The Cropredy Box - Old Boys XVI 1997 season" It also includes the famous tape recording of the April Fool joke that Simon played on Swarb - well worth buying it just for that.......
They are also very friendly and approachable - and they appreciate their fans. Ric (fiddler) actually asks about my family when I see him - I don't know how he can remember all that info, except that he cares.
@LadybirdGryphon I'll second that. I've spoken at length with Ric and Chris, and they're both diamond geezers. Both were tremendously generous with their time before a gig some years ago, encouraging my daughter to carry on with playing the violin. She's still playing! And they remembered her the next year, too ....
Fairport has been my favourite band since I was 15 - and that was a long, long, time ago, considering they've been together nearly 40 years. And it shows - their instrumental arrangements are brilliant, and their harmonies superb! I love, love, love this band, and would recommend anyone to give them more of a listen.
Love the goofy Morris dancers (is there any other kind?) A bit of fun, which is how folksters should be.

I was in the audience when they filmed that fantastic band to go see live.
I remember everyone chanting " you fat bastard" to the direcer, ken russell, while he was trying to "direct" 30,000 drunken fans

I bought that house (and studio) from Dave Pegg. It's still open!

This is great - I play this in a brass band and it's one of my favourites. Is this version available on a CD?
