this is great to see rock muscians doing this style back then but this travis technique is a common place in country music seriously check out some of the travis pickers on youtube like doyle dykes, tommy emmanuel these guys are amazing and steve of course
Anyone can play a guitar very well if they practice alot. It is the people like Steve Howe that bring in their own style and nuances that make greatest rock guitar players to ever live.
NO TABS PLEASE! Thank you. If people can't learn by watching this, and more importantly, listening to this, then maybe they should take up the triangle or kazoo instead.
I hear you. Rock n roll lost touch with this aspect of its roots circa 1974. After that it just became dumbed down power chord music with morons hanging scarves hanging from their spandex pants, etc. (Rush being an exception).
Loneliness is a power that we posses to give, or take away forever. All I know can be shown by your acceptance of the facts there shown, before you. Take what I say in a different way and its easy to say that this is all, confusion. As I see a new day in me, I can also show if you and you may, follow.
aww, he didn't do the really fast turnaround the second time like he does on the album :P
I agree, he's not mentioned much, but he's definately one of the greats, his playing is very impressive, you can see he draws on many varied influences, especially classical guitar, leading to some very unique and innovative music.
check out uli john roth, he also uses pick and fingers. There are numerous other players who will mix up their playing styles for whatever suits. Have you ever heard of Lenny Breau?
Yes I must confess Steve is the best. There are a lot of great fingerpickers but steve can do it all - you name it from rock licks to rag. He's simply the best all around player. #2 is Alex Lifeson.
Steve is has mastered many forms and melds them so beautifully it's amazing. I've seen Page, Beck, Vaughn, Trower, Lifeson, Emmit, Morse, DiMeloa, Johnson and saw Howe in the Union Tour and no one comes close to the breath of his musical talent. God bless you Steve!
It's really hard to explain, but you need to just alternate bass on the E, A, and D strings and melody on the high e/b strings using those chords. But getting it up to speed and using your fingers/pick is harder than it looks. Took me a month or two.
But once you learn to use the hybrid picking style, you'll NEVER look back!
The guitar riff is definitely all Steve. But, the section's initial creation was done by Chris way before Steve entered the band, which is why it's credited on The Yes Album being by Squire. You can this riff in it's original form in the song "For Everyone", which is on "The Word Is Live". And, of course, on various bootlegs.
Does anyone know the name of the DVD? It'd love to get it! (or at least try to!)
Steve Howe has been an influence on me for yeaaars! I remember the first song that hooked me onto Yes was Starship Trooper. The solo at the end took me far, far away... kept listening to it over and over, and it's still just as amazing as when I first heard it!
If he would just write a book on finger picking with tabs I bet he'd sell millions. I've always been prejudiced against fingerpicking books. I never get the feeling I'd get to learn anything impressive with them.
If Steve Howe would just recommend a fingerpicking book. (or anyone else?)
its not about the video being on here its about the company who owns it. if that company dont want it on here then it wont be. damn you morons sure are stupid
Someone please, please tab this out. I'm listening to it at half speed and it's driving me nuts. There is something about these Chet Atkins style picking riffs that short circuit my brain.
The copyright to the song is actually still owned by Atlantic. Royalties for complete performances are distributed to the composer(s) and performers.
As to this video clip, the uploader admits it is from a CD-ROM. But the clip itself is sort of free advertising. You want to see the whole thing? You will have to seek out the CD-ROM or DVD.
I know this isn't hard, just not use to the (real ) hybrid picking technique yet, but i'm at least finally getting there :) one thing yet is which strings both M nd ring are doing. base alternation seems easy enough. Soon oh soon the "clap" too! :D
I thought i'd get this down after giving up on the clap for this evening! man i really feel like a beginner tonight! sheesh oh well ,i'll friggin get it yet!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Really, is that why they are still on tour and having to play gigs in their 50s. Plus that doesn 't have a damn thing to do with posting the DVD that Steve put out for sale.
if they played music for the passion why would they stop when they're 50? Is that the sole purpose of becoming a musician, so that you don't have to play when you're older?
wtf do you mean the rights??... 1 they made the fucking song and 2 if youre old that doesnt mean that you cant play a song you like.. is that what youre trying to say? that because youre old you cant play a song you like?.. fuck you man, my grandpa is 67 and he plays like a master, he play from manolo caracol (flamenco guitarrist and singer) to metallica!!!!
You seem to be as dumb as the rest that keep marking my comments as negative. Steve owns the copyrights to this song and is due any money from it. Posting it on this site cheats him out of what is due him. That is why NBC and other businesses make Youtube take down their videos. It's all about the cash.
Steve Howe is without a doubt one the finest British Rock guitarists of all time - just about impossible to emulate. He is a true original. However did these demos knows their stuff. Thanks.
Hybrid picking, it requires great dexterity of the ring finger and littel finger....in essence its not that hard, but its difficult to be as good as steve howe is at it
@Kanoppo Thats a technique called "Chicken Pickin' " Do a search on here and check out all the different techniques on progressive players and tricks. Thank god we have youtube to still inspire players to expand their arsenals and techniques.
