  • From what DVD is this video?

  • this is great to see rock muscians doing this style back then but this travis technique is a common place in country music seriously check out some of the travis pickers on youtube like doyle dykes, tommy emmanuel these guys are amazing and steve of course

  • Anyone can play a guitar very well if they practice alot. It is the people like Steve Howe that bring in their own style and nuances that make greatest rock guitar players to ever live.

  • @Manzkeglanzel Steve Vai is a fantastic guitarist dont get me wrong, but he is nowhere near as talented as Howe.

Howe is just in a class all his own....

  • Who else can play with all the little nuances that distinguish the great from the ordinary?

Maybe Gilmore on Dark Side of the Moon is the only other one I can think of.

  • @HonkIfYouLoveHonking Steve Vai?

  • I can't find a tab for this :(

  • "Loneliness is a power that we possess to give or take away, forever..."

    Fantastic work by Howe

  • @pedro20sousa That is probably my favorite lyric. EVER.

  • aka "Disillusion"

  • The Yes Album changed my life!!! Thank you Steve Howe!!

  • NO TABS PLEASE! Thank you. If people can't learn by watching this, and more importantly, listening to this, then maybe they should take up the triangle or kazoo instead.

  • PLZ TABS! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

  • where are all these awesome vids from???

  • I still can't play thiz freakin' part of Starship Trooper. Steve Howe iz a mazter.

  • this is my favourite part of the song

  • beautiful Martin there steveO!

  • tabs!!!!!!!!!!! please!!!!!!!!

  • All I know can be shown by your acceptance of the facts, they're shown before you

  • Can Slash paly this?

  • @facundo194 Nope.

  • @facundo194

I hear you. Rock n roll lost touch with this aspect of its roots circa 1974. After that it just became dumbed down power chord music with morons hanging scarves hanging from their spandex pants, etc. (Rush being an exception).

  • "Follooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow"

  • this man is amazing

  • Loneliness is a power that we posses to give, or take away forever. All I know can be shown by your acceptance of the facts there shown, before you. Take what I say in a different way and its easy to say that this is all, confusion. As I see a new day in me, I can also show if you and you may, follow.

  • Keep going Steve, don't stop!

  • /watch?v=51eFAXj0aaY watch this dude cover this section.

  • check this kid out... /watch?v=51eFAXj0aaY, he covers this nicely.

  • aww, he didn't do the really fast turnaround the second time like he does on the album :P

I agree, he's not mentioned much, but he's definately one of the greats, his playing is very impressive, you can see he draws on many varied influences, especially classical guitar, leading to some very unique and innovative music.

  • check out uli john roth, he also uses pick and fingers. There are numerous other players who will mix up their playing styles for whatever suits. Have you ever heard of Lenny Breau?

  • Loneliness is a pow'r that we possess to give or take away forever.

All I know can be shown by your acceptance of the fact there shown before you.

Take what I say in a diff'rent way and it's easy to see

    that this is all confusion.

As I see a new day in me, I can also show if you and you may follow.

  • Yes I must confess Steve is the best. There are a lot of great fingerpickers but steve can do it all - you name it from rock licks to rag. He's simply the best all around player. #2 is Alex Lifeson.

  • @rushrushrushfan I couldn't agree more!!!

  • Make more tube videos... and we will follow......

  • follooooww

  • You are a Genius.. Thanks for your music.... from Venezuela

  • Steve is has mastered many forms and melds them so beautifully it's amazing. I've seen Page, Beck, Vaughn, Trower, Lifeson, Emmit, Morse, DiMeloa, Johnson and saw Howe in the Union Tour and no one comes close to the breath of his musical talent. God bless you Steve!

  • @1stDyster So true.

  • I totally dig the little bend at 00:16.

  • does anybody actually know what the right hand picking pattern is ??

what does he do with the pick ?? if somebody has the picking pattern with the tab , that would be awesome . I can't figure out how he does it.

    TX

  • @sergekites

It's really hard to explain, but you need to just alternate bass on the E, A, and D strings and melody on the high e/b strings using those chords. But getting it up to speed and using your fingers/pick is harder than it looks. Took me a month or two.

But once you learn to use the hybrid picking style, you'll NEVER look back!

  • Was this written by Chris or Steve?

  • The guitar riff is definitely all Steve. But, the section's initial creation was done by Chris way before Steve entered the band, which is why it's credited on The Yes Album being by Squire. You can this riff in it's original form in the song "For Everyone", which is on "The Word Is Live". And, of course, on various bootlegs.

  • Does anyone know the name of the DVD? It'd love to get it! (or at least try to!)

Steve Howe has been an influence on me for yeaaars! I remember the first song that hooked me onto Yes was Starship Trooper. The solo at the end took me far, far away... kept listening to it over and over, and it's still just as amazing as when I first heard it!

  • folloooooooow.........

  • If he would just write a book on finger picking with tabs I bet he'd sell millions. I've always been prejudiced against fingerpicking books. I never get the feeling I'd get to learn anything impressive with them.

If Steve Howe would just recommend a fingerpicking book. (or anyone else?)

  • FWIW, I'd have never known about the DVD if it weren't for these vids posted to YT. IMO, it's advertising. I'm going to buy it.

  • You can't. They stopped selling it.

  • Comment removed

  • is this really steve howe?

  • @dante666dvl

yes. look at his fingers. you can't tell?

  • its not about the video being on here its about the company who owns it. if that company dont want it on here then it wont be. damn you morons sure are stupid

  • This is another that I'd actually thought I'd mastered, but alas no. I was playing around the first position of E Maj.

  • Someone please, please tab this out. I'm listening to it at half speed and it's driving me nuts. There is something about these Chet Atkins style picking riffs that short circuit my brain.

  • Thank you man..... i alway wanted to learn this part, and this way is more easier than listen it only!!

  • dissolution... :D

  • The copyright to the song is actually still owned by Atlantic. Royalties for complete performances are distributed to the composer(s) and performers.

As to this video clip, the uploader admits it is from a CD-ROM. But the clip itself is sort of free advertising. You want to see the whole thing? You will have to seek out the CD-ROM or DVD.

  • I BOUGHT the DVD. This is all there is on the DVD. Do you think they are going to sell more of the DVDs now that it is free on Youtube?

  • what is the title of this DVD? Didn't know he had one out with all his acoustic work on it.

  • Steve Howe is such an overlooked guitarist.

Very few guitarists have such versatility in their playing styles.

  • I know this isn't hard, just not use to the (real ) hybrid picking technique yet, but i'm at least finally getting there :) one thing yet is which strings both M nd ring are doing. base alternation seems easy enough. Soon oh soon the "clap" too! :D

  • I thought i'd get this down after giving up on the clap for this evening! man i really feel like a beginner tonight! sheesh oh well ,i'll friggin get it yet!

  • I have this DVD. I'm surprised they aren't suing you for posting this.

  • unlike most modern musicians Yes plays music for the passion and not the money

    heh

  • your argument doesn't make sense.

if they played music for the passion why would they stop when they're 50? Is that the sole purpose of becoming a musician, so that you don't have to play when you're older?

    lol

  • you probably meant "you don't have to STOP when you're older", but I agree with you and not with the 2manygitars douche

  • It's not about playing when they are 50. It's about owning the rights to the music.

  • I'm guessing you're either a capitalist or..? Your feelings are so 80's.

  • wtf do you mean the rights??... 1 they made the fucking song and 2 if youre old that doesnt mean that you cant play a song you like.. is that what youre trying to say? that because youre old you cant play a song you like?.. fuck you man, my grandpa is 67 and he plays like a master, he play from manolo caracol (flamenco guitarrist and singer) to metallica!!!!

  • You seem to be as dumb as the rest that keep marking my comments as negative. Steve owns the copyrights to this song and is due any money from it. Posting it on this site cheats him out of what is due him. That is why NBC and other businesses make Youtube take down their videos. It's all about the cash.

  • fuck you .l. its about the music not the money, he already has all the money in the world.. do you know how much that guitar must cost?

  • You are so fucking stupid I shouldn't even respond. It's about copyrights dumb ass.

  • then dont ;) (you just did by the way)

  • Steve Howe was very influenced by Chet Atkins, hence his great country style riffs. Yeah, he's one of the greats..and Chet!

  • Steve Howe is without a doubt one the finest British Rock guitarists of all time - just about impossible to emulate. He is a true original. However did these demos knows their stuff. Thanks.

  • You can tell is Steve because of the super skinny hands

  • I always thought this was TWO guitars...DANG!!

  • how the hell does he use a pick and his fingers at the samen time?

he is the best guitarrist ive ever seen

  • its called chicken picken, actually it is very common on country music ;)

  • Hybrid picking, it requires great dexterity of the ring finger and littel finger....in essence its not that hard, but its difficult to be as good as steve howe is at it

  • @Kanoppo I can but I BARELY can and I barely can

  • @Kanoppo its called chicken-pickin my friend :) And its a tad more awkward than straight finger style for sure

  • @KMatteKudasaiC this is no chicken pickin this is hybrid picking. chickin pickin is country solo's with pick and fingers

  • @Kanoppo It's called chicken picking :D Not that hard, actually it helps a lot.

  • @Kanoppo hy brid picking man its a bitch to master

  • @Kanoppo it is called hybrid picking

  • @Kanoppo hes very good, but if hes the best you have seen, you have some exploring to do

  • @Kanoppo

its not THAT hard just use the pick like ever and use middle and ringfinger for picking

    steve howe is great !

  • @Kanoppo Thats a technique called "Chicken Pickin' " Do a search on here and check out all the different techniques on progressive players and tricks. Thank god we have youtube to still inspire players to expand their arsenals and techniques.

  • @MrAntIbarra also known as hybrid picking

  • @Kanoppo

Lots of players do, especially in country. Does take some practise though.

  • if you could put some tabs up for this i would really appreciate it.

  • could you post this playing it very slow?

very cool by the way. I've always liked this part of the song.

  • I love how his fingers move!

  • Fantastic, what guitar is Steve using here?

  • herrie, I believe it's a Martin 000-45 or OM-45. You can tell it's 45 by the ridiculous fingerboard and it's def a smaller body. Cheers fuckface!

  • could you please play the entire song of starship trooper?

  • exellent
