Totally agree with you on Apocalypse Now, just saw it recently but I imagine its a film that gets easier with repeat viewings! I have only seen it once as well. Good list! Have you ever seen Letters from Iwo Jima? If not I recommend you see it, one of my favourites! Good Video!
@dillian100 Glad I'm not alone! Yeah I think it'll benefit on repeat viewings. I've seen Letters From Iwo Jima and I like it but it would be more of an honorable mention for me. Thanks!
Damn, you explained Full Metal Jacket perfectly. That's my favorite War film. Your list was great, a big chunk I haven't seen but I know Army of Shadows and The Human Condition are at my library. I would love to see the cinematography in Thin Red Line.
@TheBSKILL Thanks! It's always good to know I'm making some sort of sense ha.
The Human Condition is a trilogy and each movie is at least 3 hours long so you definitely have to take the time out to watch them but it covers a lot of ground. Thinking about it now I might like Army Of Shadows more.
Oh wow, sounds like a real thorough story. Haha, yeah that's the thing with lists, once you put it up you start to second guess your choices. Still a lot of films I need to see on your list.
I'm like the king of second guessing hah. It's a miracle I could even pull together a structure to do this list! I definitely want to do some more lists in the future. I was thinking of maybe doing top 5's of movies from a specific director and/or actor.
@theInnerdvdPattern Same w/ me man, that's why I'll only do a list if I'm certain the movies I pick won't be too off the positions. That's an awesome idea, I do that subconsciously by ranking each director/actor's work. Looking forward to it :)
@TheBSKILL Yeah I was thinking about doing that but I had the ten picked out for this list like 1-2 weeks ago hah. I'm a master at procrastinating I guess. I finally just gave up and came up with some order but with me lists are never set in stone.
@theInnerdvdPattern Yeah lists are difficult when you love all the movies so closely. Then when you posted it you watch it and wished you said another movie or placed something somewhere else lol. Either way I liked your picks.
You assembled yet another excellent list. I still haven't seen Full Metal Jacket (nor have I watch Clockwork Orange). I keep pushing it aside for other films. I don't care for Platoon and Oliver Stone movies. I have no idea why Platoon is even considered a great movie.
great list there man. good to see waltz on your list that is a very interesting war film and i love downfall that would be my favorite war film. downfall made me read more up about hitler and that movie is just great.
I am completely with you on Apocalypse Now. I couldn't get into it like others. I loved the first half and the last 15-20 minutes. Everything else I wasn't that into. I need to see it again too.
I love Full Metal Jacket, every minute of it. It's one of my top 10.
@thatmovieguy777 Thanks! In my opinion, Battle Of Algiers is a must own Criterion. It's packed with features. I'm going to pick up the blu ray release on the next B&N sale.
I think many people prefer the first half of FMJ because of Hartman. He's gotta be one of the ten most memorable characters out of all the movies I've seen. But I love the second half as well, particularly Adam Baldwin. The ending of Se7en is rather similar to this one, don't you think?
I'll have to see Algiers, I've never even read anything about it.
A favorite war movie of mine is A Midnight Clear from the early 1990s. Sorry I don't have a camera, or I'd do a response for you!
Paths of Glory is certainly one of my favorite Kubrick films...but of course, I'm an even bigger fan of Full Metal Jacket. My goodness, that movie shocked the hell out of me.
I think Spielberg can get away with more violence in an R-rated movie than anybody else. Private Ryan, Schindler' List and Amistad all have incredibly harsh sequences in it...Ryan could have legitimized the NC-17 rating, too bad Spielberg can get away with so much.
@CineRam Yeah Spielberg can do what he wants. Hartman from FMJ is very memorable and great but I do feel the second half gets unfairly bashed on a lot. In some ways, I might even prefer the second half.
I think I know what you mean comparing FMJ to Se7en's ending but you'd maybe have to elaborate more for me to get what your saying. Not on here though for the -12 people who haven't seen those movies.
I've yet to see A Midnight Clear. I'll check it out. Sorry about your camera issues!
SOP is the first film Errol Morris shot in widescreen. I don't know any other docs in the 2.35 aspect ratio, other than this one and Tabloid. Which version of Apocalypse Now did you see? I prefer the original, non-"Redux" version. Platoon is excellent, of course. Saw Waltz with Bashir only recently. Really quite interesting, I'll have to take another look at it, I know I didn't take it all in the first time around. Seen many of those Downfall parodies. My favorite is about Watchmen.
@CineRam I'm pretty sure I watched the original, non-"Redux" version. It's just one of those classics that I couldn't fully get into. I'll reserve real judgement until I re watch it though.
Waltz is great. It's definitely one of my favorite non-Disney/Pixar animated movies.
I haven't seen that particular parody but I'll check it out.
ahh Apocalypse Now would be my #1 pick and it's my favorite film of all time. I think Das Boot is arguably the best war film ever made imo. Battle of algiers is the best urban warfare film ever made. I love that film so much, excellent #1 pick.
Downfall was the best film of 2004 imo. Amazing film. Paths of glory is Kubricks best pre Dr. Strangelove film.
Army of shadows is badass. My favorite Melville film. Have you ever seen Rome Open city?
@bigtoe512 I think when I re watch Apocalypse Now I may change my mind. I felt like I didn't get very much out of it despite it's technical brilliance. I've yet to see Das Boot. I've been meaning to see it for a while now.
Agreed on Downfall and Paths Of Glory!
I haven't seen Rome, Open City yet but I really want too!
I'm kinda with you on Apocalypse Now.I can't really say anything bad about it,it's a superbly made film.I also had a hard time getting anything from it aside from the technical brilliance. You're not ignorant, some "masterpieces" ultimately just don't click with everyone even if they're stylish or well made.
Love Saving Private Ryan! The opening scene is easily one of the best war scenes put to film.
I haven't seen Thin Red Line in so long but I remember liking it. Need to rewatch it!
@Crisrav1138 Thank you! Glad I'm not alone on that. There's quite a few more films out there like Apocalypse Now that I also think are great but don't fully register with me for whatever reason.
Agreed! It's possibly the best scene Spielberg's directed? It's definitely the best action scene he's done imo.
What about Band of Brothers and The Pacific?

@ksmred2 Thanks! Really? I highly recommend checking out both films...especially A Clockwork Orange.
I've only seen half of Platoon and while I liked what I saw I wasn't blown away or anything. I'm also not really into Stone.

Yeah Full Metal Jacket is great. I think the second half of the movie is unfairly hated on but I may like as much if not more than the first half.
