I think the most realistic scenario for mind uploading is where nano-robots that repair the brain are then used for installing mechanical replacement neurons. Eventually it may become possible to create neurons that can do more than just replicate the function of a biological neuron--they can also transmit data about themselves. The brain itself will become something that, unlike our biological brain, is "uploadable".

Once we have the appropriate machinery (signal receivers, building materials, robots that can take the materials and build things out of them, etc..) installed around other solar systems, it will then be possible to send people (as data) to these other solar systems at the speed of light. All of this is of course assuming humanity survives long enough to invent these things rather than obliterating ourselves.

Im highly interested in it but I worry about the harm that could be done with it. Or the mistakes that could be made that may cost some of the first few to lose there lives because of error in upgrades. I feel we are smart enough to foresee these things but I dont know if we will be smart enough to actually attempt them any time soon. With our knowledge base growing so fast maybe we will. But Ill want it to be a sure deal before I sign up for my mega buster and enhanced learning upgrades :p.

Personally, I believe in genetic engineering, to fix nasty genetic disorders, and to make the general population smarter and stronger would be a good thing. And I would love to shed our biological shell, as long as we can make a body that could emulate everything good about a human body, and would let us still eat the good food when we want to.

even though the body looks preserved, the sheer cold does too much damage to the cells. It's probably better to just freeze dry your body, the damage would be about the same and it wouldn't cost as much.

I'm not so keen on giving people the 'right' to enhance themselves, I mean a dude built like the terminator could quite easily commit crimes and there's dick all the police could do to stop him. Unless we have an 'enhanced' police force, though that will only lead to escalation.

Greg Egan makes some interesting leaps in his hard sci-fi about "uploaded" humans exploring the universe. I like the idea of us staying right fuck here- turning Earth into Paradise- while our electro-dopplegangers cruise the cosmos..... :)
