Not true. It depends greatly on where you are, what kind of protection you have, how prepared you are etc. Assume you're 50 miles from a detonation point. You're surviving the blast. Now you'll need to survive the fallout. A shelter 36" under ground will protect you from fallout. You'll need food, water, and other supplies to survive for at least a month. After that you'll have to limit out door exposure and all fallout will have to be washed into trenches and burried. You CAN survive.
You'd need way more than a month's worth of supplies. The resultant nuclear winter of even a limited nuclear exchange would severely impact crop production, and likely plunge temperatures of the U.S. inland by about 10-20 degrees for a minimum of half a year. A full year is more likely. You're talking millions of tons of debris, ash and dust launched into the stratosphere worldwide. That's not even counting the complete break down in infrastructure to get food where it needs to go.
