I have a question if anyone can answer it....when Dr. Wilbur saw Sybil's alter, Ruthie come out, how did she know that something terrible must have happened to her? Was Ruthie being an infant indicate something?
@sapherequeen It is possible that a persona may not have known about the other personalities. Who decides who comes out? I think there has to be a "guardian". Tori Amos displays several in 1 song. Understand though, that the Doc had hypnotized Sybil & only was it under hypnosis that she displayed the personas. Otherwise, the puiblic was unaware. Personas come & go as reaction to stress. Ruthie may have been picking up stress where she left off...say 20 years ago...never to be heard of again.
@sapherequeen Yes, when a person reverts back to infancy, it is a sign that something very disturbing happened to the patient. Sybil hearing or thinking she is hearing her mother's voice triggered that response.
Hey “N ii ghtversionn” IMPERSONATOR who got COMMENTS ON GLOBAL WARMING 101 SHUT DOWN FOR IMPERSONATING AND OTHER HARASSMENT to laurelbush (also known as Spitfiremacx)
You're 69 year old stalker. Youre a global warming DENIER with no peer-reviewed science so all you can do is IMPERSONATE PEOPLE. Further proof global warming DENIERS are FRAUDS
DID appears after the child has been massively sexually, physically or mentally abused & that is the only way how that poor child can survive-to create more personalities who are sharing the horrible stuff which is happening to this child. Sick people who are doing this to children should be closed for ever at the psycho clinic and never ever be able to leave their room. All the ignorant who never helped should go to jail.
I used to watch this not knowing I had it. at 28 I started to send myself clues, I just realized I would leave myself clues when I was younger also. Does anyone believe there is a side that just want to give up the ghost (say I had enough and chose to go to the light) I had several episodes in childhood where I just went to sleep or went into commas and I heard one day a dr. say she's going to die.
This was well done. I also have D.I.D. and was dx'd in '06. It makes me feel better seeing that there are people out there trying to educate and not tear others apart regarding this illness. Thank you for making this.
@beneathyourlove I've know about it my whole life. Mainly because my case is more similar to the book 'when Rabbit howls' than Sybil's. I would imagine you would know by loss of time in large chunks and hearing your internal family chattering. Not to mention emotions that are overwhelming and you have no idea why.
Very true. But Im pretty sure I do not suffer from DID. Perhaps some type pf autism but I doubt DID. Stay safe and warm, thank you for sharing your information with me
the sound is really soft... I had to turn my laptop's volume all the way up and practically strain my ears just to hear it. I actually just saw this movie for the first time last night. I was in tears a chunk of the movie, and then there were parts that I don't recall (my guess is that my protective alter had come out so that I wouldn't get triggered, but that is just a guess).
Wow... no they should not. It's not their fault they have that. People get Multiple personalities from severe trauma as children (such as sybil). So technically, their parents or whoever abused them and caused the trauma should be put in jail. Before you're an asshole like this again, look up what your talking about so you don't look like an idiot again.
I have to agree with you AmberManagedMischief. It's not their fault that they went to extreame abuse/stress when they were children, and what gives you the right to judge, iamhaterman? Get your facts straight, there are books that professionals wrote about D.I.D.
nah, i think it may be beneficial if U took ur own advice there - less of u lot the better!! cos people with D.I.D/other mental-health issues can't be blamed for what they have - but i am curious as to what is ur excuse for being a d**k-head??? u said what u did cos ur either sad, pathectic and bored (& wanna provoke people) OR u really are that STUPID & IGNORANT!! either way u don't come looking too good !!!!
this movie its just one of my favorites cuz well i learned so much. i study psychology and I do my internship in a psychiatric so i see a lot of cases all the time. i can not find the book. but at least i have the movie. i like the Dr. cuz she use all what she has and know even she doesnt not use an orthodox psychoanalysis... so good!
Her mother would tie her legs to a light fixture and give her an enema and then use a button hook or a knife and scrape at her... um well... her lady part.
poor baby, what's worse is that it's all true. i got sick after watching this movie the events were so horrible. thank God for Dr. Wilbur (i think that's her name, correct me if i'm wrong).
omg... yeah the movie was pretty bad and fairly accurate to the book... but upon having completed the book recently... I was in such tears, I couldn't contain myself.
I love this movie.
Btw, AngelParisJordan.. that's just a very weak theory against Dr. Wilbur.. she did what she could. And she did a great deal.
Sybil even confirmed all the events in the book to be true. It was consentual.
The reason why they claimed that Dr. Wilbur "caused" them was because others in her profession FAILED at treating the illness and Dr. Wilbur made them look bad. Trust me, I know how these things work.
What people don't realize is that if it weren't for Dr. Wilbur Sybil would've ended up dead or in a mental hospital. I think Dr.Wilbur saved Sybil's life.
in fact, it was so bad.. the movie doesn't even go into detail as the book does. But you do get the idea.
A LOT more happened in the green kitchen the movie doesn't cover (and thank goodness, too)
So you can rent the movie, or read the book. Depending on how interested you are in knowing more about the general causes of DID associated with distress, mistrust, etc.
what an amazing project! I've been thinking of taking psy and now that I saw this movie I'm definitely going to next year. I wish my teachers gave projects where we could do something cool like this though ;)

At this point I have 7 known alters. I was actually fully diagnosed when I was 12, and at that time there were 3 alters. I have a 4 yr old, 7yr old, 11 yr old, 12 yr old (only male we're aware of), 17 yr old, 28 yr old and 1 who doesn't have a set age. I am physically 19 yrs old. I was fired from my job and had to withdrawl from my college courses due to the constant switching(I am still learning how to stay present and in control). We are starting EMDR soon.
i agree with you... we find it hard, i mean deedee can cope..but i and richard find it hard.. i think deedee is the powerhouse.. controls everything here.. well i think all people who dont have what we have shouldn't watch this kind of thing... i mean it only provokes negativity about our disorders.. right?
From what I have read sybil did intigrate all of her personalities into herself but then she missed the multiples so she regressed and went back to being multiple again. She died a few years ago and they now know her real name. Sybil was a name that she made up and used.
Here's my question about the movie: At one point, Sybil tells a story about her mother putting her in some box or enclosure in the barn (if I remember right). Then Sybil would make marks with purple crayon on the inside. Later Sybil says her MPD is all an act, and her mother was wonderful, not abusive. To disprove this, the therapist finds the purple markings on the wood. But that only shows Sybil was abused, not that she had so many alternates. Did she really invent the alters?
That woman who played the role of Sybil is very good. Well, I've read the novel Sybil and it really touches me. There was a disintegration of Sybil's personality caused by traumatic experiences. OF all Sybil's personality, Vicky is my favorite, she's very sophisticated. In fact, she's the self that Sybil been dreaming of. How I wish i could see the full movie of Sybil. Just want to see how the actress acted the role of MIke and Sid, the male personalities of Sybil.
The original movie is now out on DVD (for the 1st time ever in its completely uncut/unedited version & excellent digital quality) & it's like 3+ hours long & TOTALLY worth it! Amazing acting! It's available on Amazzzzon! :)
prett good job. I am studying about DID in my abnomrmal psychogy class. We talked about the lady from the the three faces of eve her case was quite interesting too.
That was absolutely amazing. Good thing the psychiatrist realized just how terrible Sybils mother was. I should know my dad did the same kinds of things to my family
the psychiatrist can prompt the other identities and ask them about other personalities. Or one of the personalities may have mentioned the babies name, just as Vanessa accidentally tells the psychiatrist about the boys.
About ten years ago it was pretty much established that the psychiatrist prompted "Sybil" and exploited her vulnerability to suggestion in order to produce these "personalities."
I agree 100 percent. Psychiatry and the medication that's used to treat it, causes mental illness. Sybil was abused very badly, but she didn't need to be medicated, she needed to be shown real love and have kind compassionate person who understood her and had patience with her in order to heal spatially and emotionally.
It's likely she wasn't medicated back then. Psychiatrists tried to "integrate" the multiple personalities back together, if they could. Sometimes it wasn't possible to reintegrate. Nowadays Sybil would be medicated to the hilt, or given ECT, and her trauma disregarded. Progress... *sarcasm*
While I understand what you are saying and can sympathize, you obviously have no experience with people with mental illness. I have had a best friend with borderline personality disorder and a good friend with DID as well. Two different people and I've known and been nice to them for years. Trust me, I don't know the answer of how to cure them and I know being compassionate towards them helps them, but it by no means "cures" them. They're still the same way and it has been years.
I just wanted to say this to those ignorant enough to think that medication can "cure" someone who has DID with meds! I have been diagnosed with DID for 7 years now, seen several differant therapists and psychiatrists who have all said that there is no medication for DID, only those for the anxiety/depression/pyschosis that goes along with it! For those of you ignorant enough to comment on something you have no idea what you are talking about, need to do some major research!
you read the book? I am...it's hard to imagen a fourteen year old reading the book, but im the kind of person who trys to walk into the mind of others...... vewry good BTW
well, my sister was nine when she read the book and had no difficulties with it. It is so easy-to-read and have no hard medical terms in it that even kids can "enjoy" it. Of course when you're slightly older you have more insight, but for me it's not so hard to imagine a child reading it. Glad if you like it.
oh it's a great book. I guess because of the family im in, it's hard to imagen someone my age (or younger) reading a book like this. But I get alot of my "advanced" reading from my scottish friend Pippin.... But again it's probably because of my background that makes it hard for me to believe it.
