  • 4 people got no soul

  • Thank you for posting!

  • Sublime :)) x

  • I forgot all about this song until a friend posted it on his facebook profile!

  • no words...

  • Thank you for posting this track from this always overlooked album from the Queen of Soul. Hard to believe this 2nd LP collaboration with she and Curtis Mayfield was so not appreciated then. It is one of her best, but then they were ALL very good. Sharing this cut is special - thanks again & Happy Mardi Gras!! ***DAVEDJ***

  • Oh What A VOICE

  • Brilliant is all I can say...

  • I think I stopped breathing until that was over.....so beautiful.

  • DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • its interesting i didnt know her husband at time gylnn turman could write

  • THANK YOU!!!!!! Truly brilliant. Very few can do it like Ree Ree.

  • First, there was Aretha. ARETHA FRANKLIN. No one else like her. She's just that good.

  • oh just wonderful, thank you for sharing this with me.. just wonderful..

  • magnificent! mesmerizing! thank you for posting!

  • it was honey :)

  • @UnderWayThe Wasn't it Honey, though?!? Yesssuhhhhh!!

  • the most beautiful and pure voice in this world MISS ARETHA without any doubt !!!!!

  • 2:46-3:05 WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE THE EMOTION THAT WAS EVOKED IN ME WHEN I HEARD THAT!! pure natural BRILLIANCE!!

  • RIGHT. GREAT COMMENT.

  • Atlantic gave her the copyrights to her last 4 studio albums including , "Almighty Fire" where this song closes out Side 2. There has been discussion about releasing them along with her next album that she has stated will be released independently. This is one of my favorites. It is absolutely astounding that legends like Aunt Ree Ree, Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson do not have domestic recording deals.....such disrespect. What would the music industry look like without those three artists?

  • Wow.

  • this is soul fully sweet. thank you, yaskam, for giving me this gift.

    Blessings.

  • You're welcome.

  • quelle chanson magnifique, toutes les expressions de la beauté et de l'amour sont personnifiés chez elle.

  • AMEN

  • BTW, 10*s for this post! =)

  • does anyone know any songs by Arethra that are like this.... or anyone else for that matter

  • Aretha wrote a song called Are You Leaving Me and it is similar with Ree on the piano and the deep feeling.

  • SHE WAS SO SEXY WHEN SHE WAS YOUNG

  • The GENIUS of Aretha is really UNIQUE.

  • Aretha 's still the bomb!

  • As matter of fact Aretha's "Master Of Eyes"is the prototype & the blueprint of what Chaka's most famous style(she has many)is based on.Before Quincey built Chaka's walls he built them first for Aretha on "Master Of Eyes" in 1973.I give credit where it's due. I love Aretha for her musical genius also. All Chaka has done is taken Aretha's vision to the next level(s).Aretha lives for Chaka -she birthed that great voice! But have you guys heard Melanie Fiona?Music might be saved!

  • OMG! You can't compare the two? Why not? Chaka's Aretha's musical daughter & was called Lil Aretha @ age 11 because that was the musical image she evoked. If there wasn't an Aretha there would be no Chaka as we know her today, just like if there was no Chaka there would'nt be hundreds of singers as we know them today.I hear a lot of Chaka in this song, but it's pure Aretha!Chaka is a very funky modernized version of Aretha with a lil Janis,Billie,Ella,Carmen,Etta,Gladys,Joni &Tina thrown in!

  • This is one of my favorite songs of many by Aretha! "If you ever feel the need I'm your speed" Classic! Chaka Khan and Aretha are not to be compared! Totally 2 different styles. They're not the same age but they do have a great admiration for one another musical and vocal style! Aretha Franklin was the bomb - back-o-the-day!

    Ronn,

  • SWEET!

  • "It was honey in my tea". WOW!!!

The way she sang that line was AMAZING!!!! On Teena Marie's debut album, "WILD AND PEACEFUL" on the back credits she gives thanks to Aretha by calling her Aretha "Flawless" Franklin. Songs like this prove why the word "Flawless" is appropriate for this lady.

  • Ray CHARLES: "ARETHA is one of the greatest I've heard any time".

  • SIMONE, daughter of Nina Simone: "Apart from your mother, who has influenced your singing?: Aretha Franklin".

  • Lena HORNE: "I'm glad i have ARETHA in my life".

  • Jon PARELES: "Aretha Franklin's VOICE: Lithe and sultry, assertive and caressing, knowing and luxuriant, her singing melts down any divisions between gospel, soul, jazz and rock, bringing an improvisatory spirit even to the most cut-and-dried pop material ".

  • Chritopher John FARLEY: "Franklin is not simply the Queen of Soul; she holds royalty status in the fields of gospel, blues, rock and pop as well".

  • J.FREEDOM DU LAC: "No one pummels a lyric quite like Aretha Franklin (...) Franklin remains a force of nature, even after all these years of brilliant belting. She burrows into a lyric until she finds its emotional core. And her voice is still an astonishing instrument".

Shirley CEASAR: "Thank you for your wonderful gift. God spared your life to continue to sing and bring joy".

  • Nikki GIOVANNI: "Aretha came and we had a champion (...) that voice lifted our spirits; and we changed a nation".

  • Bill COSBY: "Aretha Franklin is responsible for more female singers working someplace else because they tried to copy her".

  • Robert MERSEY: "Aretha is a natural. No matter what she sings (...) she is completely free, uninhibited and thrilling"

  • Patti LABELLE: "Aretha is the best singer in the world".

Barbra STREISAND :"I'm really inspired by talent, it doesn't threaten me. I wish I could sing like Aretha FRANKLIN. Those fantastic high notes she hits".

  • Patti also said "NO ONE sings like Chaka Khan, NO ONE". Natalie Cole said "If we could bottle Chaka's voice we would all be singing like Chaka" Prince said Chaka's voice is "the voice of life" so what's you're point bringing up titles? BTW Aretha sounds good here.

  • Aretha sounds GOOD here!!!! :( :( Just GENIUS and UNIVERSAL...

Mary J. BLIDJE: "She is the reason why women want to sing. Aretha has everything — the power, the technique. She is honest with everything she says. Everything she's thinking or dealing with is all in the music, from "Chain of Fools" to "Respect" to her live performances. She could be doing a church vocal run, and it would turn into some jazz-space thing, something I never encountered before".

  • What do you want me to do, shout the heavens. I prefer other singers to her but I never downplay her talents and artistry and I've heard better performances than this. Citing other people praising Aretha doesn't really serve a point as I tend to judge for myself.

  • OK! I respect. It's YOUR choice, it's MY choice. No problems and no hard feelings!

  • Of course no hard feelings LOL.

  • There aren't any better, more intimate performances than the ones Aretha does. She takes the cake. Now no one is down grading Chaka. She is a great singer. But Aretha is just filled with emotion and romance. You are really wasting you time trying to prove to us any difference.

  • I really could care less who anyone thinks is better unless I'm debating. I'm not trying to make Chaka or any singer better than Aretha in you're eyes.

  • Well i doesn't seem like it. Because you and you buddy paddy are on her stating your cases about Chaka. But i don't have a problem with Chaka and i think she is great and i want you to know that.

  • Are you Aretha my idol for 40 years?

  • Oh no my comments were because yaskam kept stating what people thought of Aretha as if that's what makes her great. I just brought up chaka to illustrate many critics musicians praise alot of singers very well, not just Aretha. I just hate when people misrepresent chaka's abilities if they don't know her overall as im sure you do about Aretha. I don't have any problems about Aretha and in fact she's the only real singer I don't mind being put above Chaka.

  • Yeah. This Ree vs Chaka thing needs to cease. Aretha and Chaka are like best friend. Aretha came all the way from Detroit to honor Chaka last year. They have mad love for one another and we should too.

  • True.

  • that "if you ever ever ever" bit from 2:54 gets me everytime

  • Oh YES!!! What a genius!

Chaka KHAN said : "YOU!, Aretha, have always been and still are my only vocal mentor."

  • yes,Ree's her only mentor..whats interesting is that both Ree and Chaka only had one or two mentors but their genius prowess enables them to revolutionize their own styles of singing,Aretha with soul and Chaka with funk..pure geniuses!

  • THANKS Yaskam!!!!... This is awesome... Aretha at her BEST!!!

  • thanks yaskam for this...you are the best!

  • It's like she's speaking to YOU ALONE. WOW!

  • SMOOOOOOOOOOOOTH, PERFECT VOCAL STYLING....thanks for posting

  • This is a gem....Thanks for posting

  • Ooooooohhhhhhh.............

  • yeah. this is one of my all-time favorites

really shows why shes Aretha and Patti and them are not

i was the second person to comment on this video. yaskam posts the best stuff

  • that's why i just subscribed to him now. Don't you just love Aretha's sultry tone here. This is exactly what I was talking about when I said Aretha Soul. Listen to how her voice takes on clarity in some areas, then takes on a raspy sound. Her phrasing is RIGHT on point and those mixed belts....WOAH! She's on the top echelon when it comes to vocals, singing and musicality.

  • Amen

this is the thing im trying to tell those kids that Chaka aint got

when have you ever heard her pull you in like this?

    never. she aint got that.

shes got a lot of gifts, but her inability to mesmerize will keep her solidly on the b-list forever

  • Yeah, Chaka has soul, but not Aretha soul. Aretha soul is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY above everyone else's. She can sing one not and it will be SOIAKED in soul and emotion. For instance, her song Baby, Baby, Baby. The first note she sings in that song gets me EVERYTIME. Whenever I hear it, it's like it's the first time I heard her do it. That's what Aretha does. No matter how many times you hear her sing, it will always feel like the first time.

  • You're SO right! Chaka KHAN said: "YOU!, Aretha, have always been and still are my only vocal mentor."

  • search "Chaka Khan-Love the one you're with" ...done in 1973,,few years before Aretha did this one..just to show what Chaka's really capable of...btw i really love this number by Ree..one of my alltime favs

  • Aretha sung love the one you're with in 1971 on her filmore album.

  • i get what you mean,,but its not that Chaka's incapable of doin so,,she can sing in so many ways..its just that she doesnt have the right material and she's more focused on her funk/fusion music back then..but yeah,,Ree's impeccable prowess just mesmerizes me!! younins who aspires to croon need to take lesson from this one!

  • ooooh thanks for this clip,i have the actually album,a classic especially this song!!

  • Thanks for your comment Theblue....

  • If I was Aretha's musical director, I'd have her close every show with this...JUST HER and the PIANO

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY ARETHA xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • An artist who at her prime could express ANY human emotion through her vocal instrument.

    Quite head-shakingly astounding.

I can't think of anyone who could reach what she reached vocally.

Thankyou so much yaskam. we love ya

  • Thanks a million for introducing me to this rare jewel. Just gorgeous.

  • OMG I had completely forgotten about this song. I used to know it, every single word and play it over and over, that's for the memories!

  • its like shes talkin 2 u

  • THE BEST..simply THE BEST!!!

  • What a powerful voice♪

    Rare track!

    Merci Beaucoup yaskam♪

    Cheers from Scotland.

  • When Aretha sings, we witness the 8th Wonder of the World.

Her Music is the 9th. =D

Yaskam, thank you for sharing with us this beautiful video.

  • Brilliant job - thank you for creating this!

  • you're welcome. Thanks for your comment.

  • OH gosh! That was just beautiful! Thank you for sharing such a unheard track

  • This is just sooo tender, thank you.

  • This is awesome! I never heard this before...this woman is from another planet. Nobody can come close to this, her delivery and deep emotional grip on A SONG IS SIMPLY NOT FOUND in todays music. I have never heard this played on the radio stations and i am 40 years old. Wow Aretha just is a very unique singer, piano player and story teller. Nobody comes close to this woman,if she were young in these days she would blow all these female singers off the charts.

  • GREAT COMMENTS! You're right.

  • This is great...we need song like this on the radio...

  • Wow great song...

    I love it...

  • THIS IS A SEXY SONG

  • omg....did anyone else see her tits in that polka dotted dress?....OMFG

  • yeah and they was huge

  • Another great post!

    Thanks for sharing!:)

  • WOW..WOW..WOW!!! This is the first time I have heard this song. Classic! I love it!! Thanks for sending this to me!

  • Thanks sooo much for posting this!!!!!!

  • De rien. C'est un plaisir! You're welcome.

  • Can't nobody express a song with feeling, soul and expierence like the (Queen of Soul) and to say that title is a understatement to describe her as an artist.

  • Wow just wonderful thanks for sending this to me! LOL! I also see Aretha has never been shy to show her greatest assets lol i.e the pokadotted dress. Much RESPECT to the Queen of R&B soul! Great composition and post!

  • Sweet Passion & Almighty Fire are two of Aretha's BEST & over looked recordings...both should be released on cd! Thanks for the great posts.

  • Interesting that the best track from this curtis mayfield produced album came from Aretha and her husband. That's the power of LOVE!

  • YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!!!!!!!!

I have searched this darn website a squillion times, looking for this awesome song.

I even approached actor Glynn Turman (co-writer) last year and asked him where I could find it.

He laughed and said that he had forgotten all about this song.

    Thank you SOOOO much!

  • The pleasure's all mine! You know when SHE sings : "Honey, honey, honey, honey, honey, honey..." at 1'19, it's FANTASTIC, isn't it?

  • Would you upload CLOSE TO YOU?

ALMIGHTY FIRE, was in my opinion,

the REAL follow up to the SPARKLE LP

(although SWEET PASSION separates the two).

The vocal range and the canvas of material bring about that Fat-Back Soul

that makes Aretha The Queen indeed.

  • Ok. I'm going to post "Close to you".

  • Holy Crap! this is one of my favorites. i play this song on my old record player with the window open and the old-fashioned metal desk fan running. so evocative! one of my very favorites, certainly from her later Atlantic years. what a fantastic post! thanks for sharing.

  • You're welcome theblueangel28. See you soon for a next post.

  • Some one said that Aretha was ugly.I some time thought she was a victim of bad fasion but she was a very good looking woman, especialy in 1974 and 1975 when she was so so very skinny,Damn she was HoT!!!!

  • I never heard this song but the minute Aretha started to sing my heart started to melt.

  • You're welcome! Paulo.... NEVER SAY DIE when you want about ARETHA.

  • YESYESYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I been waiting for this one, and I just happened to search it, and not 5 hours ago it was posted.

You are my hero! This is my favorite.

  • You're still rigth! ZF08.

  • Any song where Aretha Franklin sits in front of her piano and just sings is always guaranteed to touch your soul and move it.
