This "hypnotism" is a natural thing that occurs when the rabbit becomes so scared that they play dead - it's a defense mechanism.
That is exactly what this animal is doing.. it's a short-term reversible paralysis which can be readily induced in susceptible ‘prey species’ but is far from a calm experience - it is stressful and harmful to the rabbits. It used to be an advocated practice until they found how harmful it is to them. inform yourself. Ugh.
Don't do this just because. Only do it when you absolutely must in order to trim your rabbit's claws because this terrifies the rabbit (but they've very good at hiding fear/weakness/pain because they're prey animals). You're inducing TI (Tonic Immobility), which is a rabbit's natural last-resort defense mechanism in order to escape a predator who may thing the rabbit is dead and ease up on the fight/restraint.
OMG GUYS DONT DO THIS ...I JUST GT A BUNNY FOR MY BDAII AND I HAD NO CLUU HOW TO GIVE HER THE BEST SO BEEN DOIING SO MUCH RESEARCH FOUND OUT THAT HYONOTIZIN A BUNNY IS ACCTUALLY SCARING THEM AND CAN KILL THEM
PLEASE don't do this to your rabbit! You are literally putting your bunny through such terror that it feels the need to 'play dead'. It may look like it's calm and relaxed but it is actually terrified. This is a cruel thing to do to an animal, please find another way to calm it down.
Thx soo much for showing! I have a friend and she has a bunny and it won't stop freaking out! She can t manage to clip its nails so I do it when I m at her place cuz I m not scared of holding it right and do the clipping but I don t visit her often enough soo I guess we re gunna try this! See if it works :)
this is very dangerous for the bunny! it's lounge can collapse.bunny's have a nerve in the neck which makes them look like falling asleep, but the truth is,that they can only breath hardly!please don't do this!
This is very difficult for me to do. My bunny is btwn 3 to 5 months (so the pet store told me) and I still don't know it's gender. I tried hypnotizing it but as I slowly lower the bunny it starts flopping and I just let go.
@Darice93 Same here. I got mine from a flea market. I think it's 2 months old. I only tried to do this once though. My bunny did the same thing but I will keep trying. I need to learn this so I can clip the nails and do some other groom necessity.
TI is commonly referred to as trancing or hypnotising. It was previously thought to relax the rabbit but this has been widely discredited, studies show increased heart rate, respiration and blood pressure.TI should not be used as it is detrimental to a rabbit's health.
Tonic immobility (TI) is a state of motor inhibition that can occur in prey animals as a last defence against a predator. The rabbit will lie motionless on its back, giving the impression of being already dead and encouraging the predator to release its grip, giving the rabbit a chance to escape.
Wow, that's really interesting. I'm gonna try that on Bunny Lee and see if I can't find out his/her sex since I still don't know and I've had it for almost a year!
ha i wouldnt even be able to hold my bunnies the way u did lool any tips ive gt 2 cross breeds tht look like english spots all thay do is run away wen i cum out the do
or to talk to them or ne thing my female bunny dse cum to me after 25 mins or so talkin to it
@JeanPlaisance IWhat i do is I hold her with one hand as if she were standing and then start stroking her head, she then starts calming down and I can put her on her back. Putting a rabbit in a trance won't kill them but it's not really good for them either, therefore I ONLY trance her when I want to clip her nails because at least for me it decreases my chance of hurting her. I also don't completely trance her.
Trancing your rabbit is NOT GOOD! Google it if you do not believe me! There are many mixed opinions about doing it, but the bottom line is that it is WRONG.
In the wild, rabbits put themselves in trances as a last resort when they're dealing with predators.
Putting your rabbit into trances will increase its stress, therefore not make a happy bunny. It is NOT a peaceful experience for them.
Hey, I got a bunny aswell. She's almost 1 year old. But I have a problem. I can't pick her up! She freaks out when I try. I haven't picked her up a lot when she was young so that's probably the source of her fear. But do you know how I can get her to get used to picking her up?
Rabbits in this state are not relaxed. They are put into a catatonic state of terror and show racing heart, higher stress hormones, etc compatible with acute fear. (*McBride et al., (2007),Hypnosis: A State of Fear or Pleasure?, Proceedings of the CABTSG Study Day 2007, pp38-40.). Please think twice or thrice before doing this. I am sure Rachel doesn't mean to be cruel, but this procedure is. Moreover I know of a rabbit which died from repeated trancing.
i've been trying for the last 2 years to trance my rabbit-- i follow the instructions but he's untranceable! i tell you its hell to clip his nails i end up with scratches and bites galore I can trance my puppy though.
Thanks for commenting, guys! I"ll have more videos up very soon. :)
Due to my dad's allergies, I had to find another home for these precious bunnies. :( I miss them so much! I'M SO JEALOUS OF ALL OF YOU WHO STILL HAVE BUNNAYS!
@RachelVance omg! u can not lay a bunny on their back becuase it stopps their heart but i know that u didnt mean to try to kill your bunny but just plz just dont do it again!
@horserider944251 no it doesnt...where the heck did you hear that? if you looked, when you do that to your bunny, they still breathe normally and everything, they just dont move around...i can put my rabbit into that trance and she is fine...her heart continues to beat
I'm sure you've heard of the evolutionary response to fear being the fight or flight response well what most people don't know is there are two more kinds of responses to fear being freeze and submissiveness. It's more likely your bunny went into either of the last two.
Just because the bunny stops moving does not indicate a sign of trance
