Watched this live on the NASA TV stream last night - although I'm British I can't help but be impressed by the incredible dedication to space exploration which has benefited all of mankind. Exceptional stuff, a great little 30 minute retrospective.
Beautifully made film. A little too US biased for my (British) tastes, but I can live with that. There's nothing wrong in a nation celebrating success and the shuttle has been a fantastic achievement. This film was much better than the BBC's "Horizon" documentary recently, which spent far too much time talking about Challenger and Columbia. The emphasis here was just right. Respect and celebration in perfect balance.
Great vid!!!! I wish I could rate this with "stars" 5 out of 5. I'm so very sad that this will be the last shuttle. I'm 36 years old, the Space Shuttle has been a part of my life. The apex of my dreams and imagination.
Our national pride will crash, there will be nothing to inspire our children to go into science. Our society will fall behind in all aspects. With nothing to replace it there is no where for us to go but down. Commercial space exploration is not viable because of the Space treaty that makes it illegal to make money in space. The only option really is government run agencies. There are only so many people that have the money to buy a ticket to space.
@kittypie070 Have you ever read the UN Space Treaty? Why are private companies out there, To make money. You can not legally make a profit from space. Every country on the planet must also profit from it in order for it to be legal. No one can own space or any thing in it. Space tourism is not a viable means of capital. And that's what there has to be for a private company to survive.
There will always be risky aspects to Manned Space Flight, always. The fact that the retirement of the Space Shuttle is partly due to the the STS-51 & STS-107 tragedies is understandable, but isn't right to me. I hope the Space Shuttle won't be the most sophisticated vehicle ever built by mankind for a too long time. We have to be united in the exploration, to build safe&reliable spacecrafts to go further! Space Shuttle has launched my dreams for 17 years, but I'll keep it in my dreams forever.
@iloveairfrance I have faith in nasa that the sls system and mpcv will be completely worth the change so that in another 30 years we can smile and think we've been to new destinations.
Only 6.296 views? Still having trouble coming to terms with the fact that we're not flying them anymore...

...well we all know what I say needs to be done with this old piece of crap tech,
~send them out with packed with seeds, our data base and a few telefunkin U49 to do the planting when they get there, each in its own direction
=if someone should find them, all the better, then we shall not be forgotten nor our hard lessons
-SEND OUT THE SPACE SHUTTLES ARCs, to each a different direction
+allow no HOMIND DNA, just to keep space safe, their is a bounty on the homo sapient now, cause the black sun

@HDaviator it's railroad terminology, they don't want those railcars rolling down a hill by themselves since the load onboard is delicate :P
Great video!

Would you like to personally tell Elon Musk and the SpaceX posse *to their faces* that "commercial space exploration is not viable"?
