He was the brother of Godfrey of Bouillon who, until his death, carried the title of 'lord protector of the Holy Grave' (or something similar, depending on translation) having refused the title of king. His family ruled for only a few generations and was defeated by Saladin.

If during the American-Vietnamese war, an American general or the US president, gave the order to kill all Vietnamese persons, you cannot expect this statement to continue years after the war has ended. They are exempt for Muslim tax, & 1/3 of the Quran is directed at them. Remember, Allah had sent 3 previous books to these people, so why would he want us not be friends with them?
Why is 3:28 still in the Quran, if it was only applicable 1400 years ago? To show us what was happening, & learn from it.

@Webcrusader007 ...You calling yourself Christian, is, according to you, an incomplete answer. The reason for this is not the 38,000 different Christian sections (according to wiki), but rather the fact that there are many Bibles, i.e KJV, NKJV, ESV RSV, etc.
Therefore, me calling myself a Muslim, is a complete answer, because you at-least know which book I follow, i.e the Quran.

Similarly, Christian comes from the word Christos shortened to Christ. Christos means a follower of Christ, i.e the Messiah or the anointed one. Since the Muslims also believe in Jesus, Messiah, the anointed one, Christ, etc, does it mean Muslims are Christians?

@t6658 This verse explains all the verses quoted above which forbid taking the kaafirs as friends in general terms. What that refers to is in cases where one has a choice, but in cases of fear and TAQIYYAH it is permissible to make friends with them, as much as is essential to protect oneself against their evil.

But if he despairs of them becoming Muslim, then he should treat them accordingly. This is something that is discussed in detail by the scholars, especially in the book Ahkaam Ahl al-Dhimmah by Ibn al-Qayyim
