those were the days. who ever decided to remove these beautiful old trains is a moron. now a days, these young college yuppies messed up the city by making it look like the land of make believe. And the trains today are pieces of shit looking monerails u see at DisneyWorld.
everyone who writes should decend on nyc for a day and just get markers and hit the insides and paint and cover the outsides and then nyc will be nyc again
Why does it have to be gone??? Nothing said NYC like all the beautiful colour and character. Now there is nothing memorable about the city cept all the memories of what it used to be.
in sydney you never see burners just mainly tags and like now cityrail is adding cctv to the trains inside of the trains this is the bad side of technoligy oh well still can get up though
As a daily NYC Subway rider, I am a little glad the graffiti is technically gone, but I still love the graffiti art that was once on the trains. Even though I was born in the 90s, I believe that we still would have had graffiti on the trains if it was art and not random garbage that gave graffiti a bad name. Many artist made really creative work and it is sad that we don't see this kind of work anymore anywhere in NYC, but due to nonsense tags, it cost us the art that made the subway's unique.

That t.v show was made fall of 1989 after graffiti on the NYC subway system ended in the summer of 1989. In the fall of 1989 all these subway were being rebuilt and other being retired. Thank god there is no more graffiti on NYC subway since summer of 1989.
we get it, you're happy since the graff was removed in 1989. 1989 is special to you. there is no better year than when they got rid of the graff in 1989.
in all seriousness though, whether you like it or not, that was a BIG part in the history of graffiti. and while you think that it was a negative part of history, to a lot of graffiti artists, as well as others who followed the artform, those were very important years in the evolution of the art.
Not true. The mta sort of won the battle in '89 but it took some years before ALL graffiti disappeared from trains.
Ghost, JA, Ket, Ven and others wrote on trains through the early 90s. 'Clean train era' and it looked good too.
We never know really, another train graffiti era can spark up again with the mta's fiscal crisis and all. Writers these days are hungry, I don't see graf slowing down on the streets or tunnel walls. We'll see...

you SHUT THE FUCK UP,graffiti is the one caused the subway carts to be in poor condition and looked horrible, and caused the subway system to be dangerous.
The New York City Subway Garffiti Strated in the late 1960's. The New York City Subway Cars had Graffiti in the 1970's and the 1980's. People that did Graffiti on the subway cars were arrested before. The NYC MTA did repainted sometimes to get the subway cars to be cleaned. In late 1984 G.O.H began,to rebuilt, repaint, and clean up subway cars. In the Summer 1989 the NYC subway Graffiti died. By 1990 all the NYC subway cars were clean and no more graffiti.
It also lead to the demise of several great subway cars too. R10-R22. R10s outlasted the R12-R22s. The 110 GOH R10s were retired by September 8, 1989. The fantrip took place in October 29, 1989. Ironically four years after the R10s were retired they also got rid of the GOH R30s. What happened to both the GOH R10s and R30s was also the saddest in the subway's history. Only two R10s survive and about 8-10 R30s.

the trains are being hit still. i see em running and you can see where they didnt clean them off totally, you see that there were throwies under the windows.
this report doesn't tell the whole story. there is still graf being done INSIDE THE NYC SUBWAY TUNNELS. i can understand tagging a subway car because people get to see your work. but people are risking their lives to go inside and tag the tunnel walls in the dark. some of it is 15 feet off the ground in places that don't even seem accessible. it's kind of strange really.
Check out the JA and GHOST throw-ups, on the train at the start. They were part of the last genration, who tried to keep it alive, up until '89, along with people like VEN, SENTO, and the SMITH brothrs.

Nonsense. The average MTA car is meant to last about 30 years (ideally). So let's see, what kind of cars did they write on:
R16s? from the late 1950s? Which lasted 30 years before being retired?
How about the R40s and R42s, which are ONLY now being retired after over 40 years or service.
Be a little more open. Graffiti decorated the subway. I hate seeing these bland silver cars.
