Actually he sheared all the teeth off the transfer case and the front end locked up, which is why he got hit by the sled. Also it was about 7500 rpm the motor ran up to. There is a little section about it in Diesel Power magazine.

the input shaft let go at the end and the motor ran up to aroudn 6800 rpms at the end before it let go.
