  • I dont watch BET, Im white male and it doesnt speak to me. BET is all blacks, right? Wheres the WET? Oh right, THAT would be racist... I dont watch the shopping networks, but not because im male, quite a few males do, but Im not stupid and obsessed with buying shitty product over the TV.

    Most women dont watch sports channels. Is it sexist to say that because its true? Or is it just a fact? People love to scream sexism and racism just because they're braindead jerry springer fucks.

  • Woah lets back up here guys. Don't jump to the word sexism so fast, it only further reduces the actual meaning of the word. This is by no means sexism, it's simply an accurate demographic. Well over 90% of the shopping channel networks audience is made up of women. Same thing with sports channel, overwhelmingly male dominated. Men do shop, but they don't watch the shopping channel, which sells things marketed primarily to women anyways..

  • WOW. I just saw this on TV...what the f*ck. And to the person below me saying " its not sexist, its true"--yes it IS sexist, and it's not true, it's stereotypical. A stereotype emerges when people take the "truth" of a few people and then apply it to that group of people as a whole, making it no longer the truth.

    I don't care whether its sexist against women or sexist against men, it's still pathetic and it's sad that such a large company engages in it. Youve just lost a customer.

  • It's not sexist, it's true. You don't have to look at rating statistics to see that the large majority of people who watch these channels are women. Like Lifetime and Oxygen, they're marketed towards women and primarily watched by them. If you're a guy and you spend more than 10 minutes in your life watching the Home Shopping network, you're probably just a woman in a mans body. Pull this off the air as soon as you pull "Television for women" because it's sexist to think a guy wouldn't watch it

  • @ThirdProjectJuno there's a difference in having the commercial say "one of the many guys who doesn't enjoy shopping?" versus having it imply that all men don't shop. Since the latter was said, YES, it is a sexist commercial...it's turning fact into stereotype. That's the issue: society tells us to blend the two together, when really, they are two very, very different things. This commercial is one of many things that shames our visual culture.

  • @Katorok Sorry, but he clearly says "or shopping channels"--its not a proper noun that is specifically aimed at The Shopping Channel or a specific network. And yes, for those of you out there that have satellite, you wil know that there are 24 hour shopping networks catered towards men, too.

    And I understand what you mean by differentiating between "shopping channels" and "shopping in general"...but lets get real, it is clear that this commercial employs a stereotypical view beyond that.

  • Yea, I don't know why this bothered me so much but it did. Whoever was in the editing room for this commercial sucked. They need to do some test groups or something for their next shot at this selling point.

Yah... right. and 2) Only ladies need shopping channels right? Cause that's all they do? Barefoot, pregnant, in the kitchen and on the phone with QVC? What an ass! If they don't start offering them Dish, DirecTV, and all other Cable companies will not be competitive in the entertainment industry with services like Netflix on demand and Hulu on the rise. I think the industry just wants to milk the cash cow dry and sell it by saying they have more channels/packages/choices than company X.
