  • The first 1:11 is the part that appears too "experimental". He is fitting a pattern that sounds a lot like teen-taal in tisra-jati. um...yeah. Mistake, indeed. But at 1:14 he nails a sweet chakradaar that lands nice. Creative License Rules!

  • @tablajazz Thanks for agreeing with me on the mistake part. It is very hard for people who do not play tabla or have understanding of matras to convince them that he made a mistake. He is human just like all of us.

    I wouldn't call 'experimentation' or 'trying something that is not conventional or tradition' is no mistake but if you talk about that he is going off beat or he couldn't come to the soam as he is supposed to, then I agree. Of course mistakes happen especially when they experiment but nice thing he has finished it off quite nicely

  • Ustad Zakir is UNIQUE and absolutely uncomparable. Even when he plays simple theka he sounds better that anyone. One of the greatest musicians to grace the earth. Even his accompaniment captures all attention. He is in League of his own.

  • Zakir Hussain is a great entertainer but thats it. I listen to him for fun drumming. But when it comes to listening to real classical music i avoid him. People mistakenly accuse me of hating him and being jealous etc.

    Also remember that he threw a temper tantrum (on stage) when he was accompanying Ravi Shankar because he wanted the tabla amplifier to be really loud. Have you all forgotten that incident? Ravi later said that this was classical music and not a rock or fusion concert.

  • Zakir is the best tabla player. What he has done for tabla is remarkable. Now everyone either follows him or are jealous of him. He is a "super power" of Tabla

  • unfortunately, zakirji's first tihai didn't work

    the third part of the third palla has 2 extra dhatichikta phrases to get to the sam - because it didn't work properly, he started another smaller tihai from the sam and finished the composition. sure he didn't guess the piece, but it did not work first time - that was the reason for the second tihai.

    The taal is indeed 14 beats (Ada Chautal, divided 2+2+2+2+2+2+2) and the composition is in Raga Shyam Kedar. The first tihai is timed to end exactly one beat before sum (this is called an "anaagat" tihai, or "aanadha") . The second tihai can therefore begin just after sum and end exactly on sum (which it does!). It is calculated, precise and a musically accurate composition.

  • would agree, not on the sama at all - but can't understand the structure of the chakradhar completely - was the attempt to play the teental in the normal laya for eight beats and then eight by six times faster in the other eight to get to 14 ? puzzling...

  • I don't think this is a mistake. The entire live recording was commercially released on the German Chhanda Dhara label ("The Genius of Pandit Nikhil Banerjee - Shyam Kedar"). I seriously doubt either of the artists would consent to a commercial release if a mistake was made.

  • If he did mess up, it still sounded pretty cool. It's hard to tell if that pause is to fix the timing or if the off timing is done on purpose. It is a rather off time piece.

  • I will not change the title. I have shown this video to few tabla players and they all agree with me. I want you guys to tell me which beat or taal this is since you guys are saying there is no mistake.

  • A mistake indeed - It's to the count of 14 beats and he fails to end on the first or on any sagnificant beat as he should have ( after all that's the point!)

  • Wrong, chakardar don't have uneven gaps and neither do tihai's

  • It starts from 47 seconds on. He completely stops at 1.02 and then completes the tihai on the sam.
