Awwww! :) Mine won't do tricks :/ I tried teaching her but she's too stupid to catch on xD I have to cut slits in her toilet paper rolls because she puts them on her head like a hat! LOL
I have 5 chinchillas and only one doesn't mind beeing picked up.
I can tell by the way your chin looks and the commends you give here that you are a very responsible chin owner. I have a chinchilla blog, where I inform people about some important chinchilla facts. would you mind if I put your video on it? I really love it! My blog is called ChinSpot
your chinchilla is amazing! i got mine last week and they are still scared of people, don't think they like being touched? and apparently they are 2/3 year old. have you got any tips/advices to so they will be closer to me?and that i can train them? i spend most of my time with them in the kitchen. i never even tried picking them up. :(
@nikkixcollide Try letting them come to you! Let them out to run around and just sit on the ground or on your bed or wherever they are and let them climb on you :) I've had mine for over 2 years now and she's almost 3 years old but mine doesn't really like being picked up either. Some of them just don't like it I guess.... Keep trying though!

I ENVY YOU! I've been wanting to train my friend's chinchilla ever since I had a dream about it giving high fives. I taught it to a toy poodle instead. :D
Wow, I would love to know how you're training Pogo! My chinchilla only likes to be pet when the door to his cage is shut - I can't imagine him letting me pick him up the way you do Pogo!
Then again, I adopted him when he was already 4 years old, so maybe he's past the point of bonding like that. He is well trained to stick his tongue out for treats, and he'll go through his tunnel (less reliably) too!
How often do you train a chinchilla one trick? Everyday or once a week...? For how long is one training session? Can you train a chinchilla only once a day or multiple times a day?
I wanted to compliment you on the wonderful responses you are making to the people viewing this cool video. So many people need to learn about chinnies
yes ...they are stuck in aquariams, with pet stores that no nothing about them
and there are 10's of thousands in rescue, cause people didnt do their homework..or thought that breeding was CUTE., Congratulations on this video and your knowledge
my best Jamie Glaser .. owner of the pet forum LUCKYS PLACE luckysplace(dot)net
You did an amazing job with Pogo, I like your idea of breaking the raisins into small pieces. I have 5 chinchillas of my own.. whom I love to more than anything! I have a homo ebony male who is "my baby" and he is pretty smart.. I am going to try to teach him some of your tricks. Cute videos and keep up the great work, Pogo is a very lucky chinny :')
@ricleonidas No, Pogo's not hungry when I teach him anything. He just really loves his treats! This video is taken over a period of two days, and the treats I give him are broken up into tiny tiny pieces, as chinchillas can only have up to two small treats per day, and that way I can do more with one treat. I got Pogo from a pet store that had 4 or 5 chinchillas in one small fish tank, with one metal can to hide in. He was $100 and was only 3 months old. I will never buy from a pet store again..
... as there are so many chinchilla's needing homes in shelters and on sites like petfinder, craigslist and kijiji. I bought him from the pet store so I could get him out of that tiny fish tank...but they will just replace the chinchillas that are bought with new ones. Unfortunately so many people buy chinchillas because they are cute, and don't realize that they require a lot of attention, and a month or two later they get rid of them... :(
@000MANDA000 Thank you so much for the info Manda and thank you for taking good care of Pogo. Is $100 the cheapest you can buy? I mean that's a lot of bucks. I hope there are chinchillas here in Philippines that are cheap, I really want to buy one.
@000MANDA000 Do you know how you can get a feisty chinchilla to get calm like yours? I had 2, one was calm and let me hold him, he got an infection and died, and I bought another. I've had this one for 4 years now, after caring for him, touching him constantly, hand feeding him, every time I let him out of his cage he runs wild and chews everything and won't let me touch him. How can I calm him down?
@000MANDA000 you said you got yours from a pet-store, is it any better to get them from someone selling online or about the same? Also in the instance such as mine where I would rather get from a breeder, would pet-store or online be the next best option? Your Chin is cute, but we have been throwing around the idea of a Chin for about a year now and want to get it right. Have you thought about breeding?
@amazonqueen I'd recommend a reputable breeder over a pet store. You could also try looking at your local animal shelter to see if there are any there who need a home too. The next best option would be to buy from somebody online who can't take care of their chinchilla anymore. Too many are in need of homes because people don't realize that chinchillas require a lot of time. They get them for the cute factor, not realizing it can be a twenty year commitment.
@amazonqueen With my chinchilla, I would never breed him as he is from a pet store and I have no idea if he would pass on any genetic diseases or undesirable traits because I don't know his genetic history, unlike the chinchilla's that reputable breeders have.
omgosh i have a chinchilaand hes just 9 months old! and when i let him out of my cage he doesnt let me hold him or hides behinde my bed.. im very gentle with him and i havent hurt him or anything.. iunno how to make a bond or to train him.. help? please lol
@Alisha3211 try hand feeding him his pellets and hay and getting him to associate your hand with good things. Chinchilla's are not generally a cuddly pet, most will not like to be held. Pogo hates being held and will struggle after I hold him for no longer than a minute. It took pogo 3-4 months to trust people completely, and it can take longer than that depending on the chinchilla. Just don't give up on him, I'm sure he will warm up to you eventually. :)
@Alisha3211 Oh you could also try taking him into a smaller room where he can not hide, like the bathroom (but make sure the toilet seat is down!) And you can sit on the floor with him and let him jump on you and explore around you. Try giving him a treat when he goes closer to you. Good treats for chinchillas are rosehips, plain cheerios, a plain shreddie, or some oats. ( not the quick kind) You can give him one or two small treats a day.
@ElisnotEllis rosehips, plain cheerios, a raisin once in a while, one or two treats a day, depending on the size of the treat. I break it up into many tiny pieces, which is why it looks like hes getting so much in the video, when he actually only got 2 treats, over the course of two days.
this video has given me motivation to train mine, starting td :D i gotta say for being a proud owner of these beautiful animals they are definitely not anywhere close to being easy to manage, let alone train like this !? i almost gave up hope for the thought of a day where they could cuddle n be cute like this ! i hope they (max & marvin) can do it, theyre pretty stubborn sometimes :(
@tsunami344 Yes I would say they are. They constantly make a mess so if you have a chinchilla you will always be cleaning up after them. They can't become wet or they can become very sick because their fur keeps in moisture. They need to bathe in chinchilla dust, and the dust can get everywhere. They need to be kept in a temperature under 72 degrees because they can overheat easily. They should also come out for playtime at least 30 minutes everyday. As far as I know they are legal there. :)
@CMcNamaraNYC a trick is about 3 weeks, 5 minutes everyday (as they are more interested in exploring, and can only have two or less small treats a day) I have a problem with pogo hiding under my bed and not coming out! What you have to do if your afraid of them getting into things. is only let them out in a secure room, like the bathroom. Make sure toilet seats are closed and that there are no cords around because they chew everything and jump into everything.
@fluffy6756 check out some rat or rabbit training videos here on youtube, I used those to help me train Pogo. Chinchilla's mostly to do their own thing and explore, I haven't seen many do tricks, but they are very intelligent little beings, and don't have to do tricks for anyone who has them living in their home as companions to see that. :)
@fluffy6756 I got the cage from a friend for $100, which is extremely cheap for a cage this size. I also bought shelving, toys, a large wheel, 2 hammocks, a tube, cooling shelves, and housing to hide in. They usually need a large cage with shelving and toys. Even with all this stuff in his cage he still gets bored if I do not take him out often to run around. If you are interested in getting a chinchilla I will send you a research link to see if they are the right pet for you. :)
I have had my chinchilla for over a year and it will not even come up to me :( it is sometimes but then I have to sit quietly and not move:( does anyone have any tips?
@latexink Many of the ones in pet stores are not socialized properly and as a result tend to be more defensive and afraid of people. If you get them at a younger age, or from a place that actually handles them often they are much more tame. Pogo has never bitten anyone enough to cause pain, but tends to give a light nip if he wants something or doesn't want to be handled, but it never hurts. Just a way of communicating what he wants I guess.
@robotsongs actually, you can see two on the carpet in this video. Since chinchillas poop every 5 minutes, it makes more sense to clean up after the chinchilla has been out. No I don't leave the shit all over my carpet. The shit also has no smell, unlike most other animals.
i wish "Poptart" would do a trick :( I've had him close to 3 yrs now and got him shortly after he was born. I try to play with him but everytime I do he just sits there or runs away lol I dont think he exactly hates me cuz if I'm gone for awhile or something, he'll run right up to the cage door when I get back. but he's really distant when I try to take him out and play with him. I do love it when he swipes his nose with his paw after his dust bath...makes him look human a little
@koasice I find that chinchillas like to do their own thing rather than interact with people. They have no desire to please like a dog would, but all are individuals and some like interacting more than others. Pogo may seem like he wants to be around me in these videos most of the time, but actually he'll only play with me the first 10 minutes of being free and then never let me catch him the rest of the time, unless I have him in a smaller space like the bathroom.
@koasice Chinchillas normally wouldn't learn tricks like Pogo does here either, but Pogo is completely obsessed with food, haha. I've only seen a few chinchillas doing tricks on Youtube, so I'm not sure how many actually do. I've even seen one play fetch with a stuffed toy, and I thought that was amazing. Tried to teach Pogo but he wont do it, as he doesn't like to carry things in his mouth.
Those tricks are awesome! In my experience, teaching tricks to a chin that hasn't developed a good social relationship with you is really difficult (e.g. one that you just bought from a store). My chinchilla just gave birth to two kits, and I'm thinking it'll be a lot easier to train the little ones since they've already warmed up to humans, although I'm not sure what the optimal age is to start the training. What's your take?
@ChinTubeHD I actually got Pogo from a pet store when he was 3 months old. (really sad actually, they had the mom and 4 babies living in a fish tank, with a just a container to hide in) It took a while for him to get used to me. Younger chinchillas who have grown up around humans I think would definitely be easier to train. I would say around 6 months - 1 year is a good time to start training.
how did u teach him that soo well hes mastered it! hahah btw really cute chinchilla can u like describe how u did it or like make a vid or something i really wanna know pleaz reply :))))
@Kjesusly Mine took a couple months to let me interact with him. Sometimes it will take a couple weeks, sometimes it can take a year or more before they fully trust you.
POGO IS SO CLEVER!!! i just got two chinnies (3 and 5 months old) a few weeks ago and still in the process of getting to know them! they dont like being held but i try to hold them for at least 5 mins every day and give them treats. I find the young one really hard to train, cos she only likes the sweet snacks!! I know it is not good for them if they have too much.. Do you have any other suggestions?? She is such a fussy eater!
@dirkofyork one or two small treats a day. In this video I used a raisin broken into tiny tiny pieces. Other treats include one or two regular cheerios a day, half or a whole shreddie cereal piece, or a single rosehip, which are healthy and contain vitamin c. You can also give apple wood sticks, from a pet store.
That was AWESOME!!!!!!!! I have a chinchilla and she would never do that, i would have to train her for years and years to do those tricks! That would be awesome if she could do that!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awwww! :) Mine won't do tricks :/ I tried teaching her but she's too stupid to catch on xD I have to cut slits in her toilet paper rolls because she puts them on her head like a hat! LOL

How-did-you-train-it??:)
fluffy6756 9 months ago
@fluffy6756 check out some rat or rabbit training videos here on youtube, I used those to help me train Pogo. Chinchilla's mostly to do their own thing and explore, I haven't seen many do tricks, but they are very intelligent little beings, and don't have to do tricks for anyone who has them living in their home as companions to see that. :)

@000MANDA000 Thanks!Its-SO-Cute-though!I-want-one-so-bad!How-much-was-your-cage?
fluffy6756 9 months ago
@fluffy6756 I got the cage from a friend for $100, which is extremely cheap for a cage this size. I also bought shelving, toys, a large wheel, 2 hammocks, a tube, cooling shelves, and housing to hide in. They usually need a large cage with shelving and toys. Even with all this stuff in his cage he still gets bored if I do not take him out often to run around. If you are interested in getting a chinchilla I will send you a research link to see if they are the right pet for you. :)

Cute Chinchilla... every one I've ever seen in the past nips and bites constantly. Also, NOSTALGIAed on the music to no end.
latexink 10 months ago
@latexink Many of the ones in pet stores are not socialized properly and as a result tend to be more defensive and afraid of people. If you get them at a younger age, or from a place that actually handles them often they are much more tame. Pogo has never bitten anyone enough to cause pain, but tends to give a light nip if he wants something or doesn't want to be handled, but it never hurts. Just a way of communicating what he wants I guess.

Is it just me or is there Chinchilla shit all over your carpet?
If so, that's incredibly disgusting, not to mention a health hazard.
robotsongs 10 months ago
@robotsongs actually, you can see two on the carpet in this video. Since chinchillas poop every 5 minutes, it makes more sense to clean up after the chinchilla has been out. No I don't leave the shit all over my carpet. The shit also has no smell, unlike most other animals.

what kind of food did u use to train him. raisins?
M4carbine97boy 10 months ago
i wish "Poptart" would do a trick :( I've had him close to 3 yrs now and got him shortly after he was born. I try to play with him but everytime I do he just sits there or runs away lol I dont think he exactly hates me cuz if I'm gone for awhile or something, he'll run right up to the cage door when I get back. but he's really distant when I try to take him out and play with him. I do love it when he swipes his nose with his paw after his dust bath...makes him look human a little
koasice 10 months ago 4
@koasice I find that chinchillas like to do their own thing rather than interact with people. They have no desire to please like a dog would, but all are individuals and some like interacting more than others. Pogo may seem like he wants to be around me in these videos most of the time, but actually he'll only play with me the first 10 minutes of being free and then never let me catch him the rest of the time, unless I have him in a smaller space like the bathroom.
000MANDA000 10 months ago 4
@koasice Chinchillas normally wouldn't learn tricks like Pogo does here either, but Pogo is completely obsessed with food, haha. I've only seen a few chinchillas doing tricks on Youtube, so I'm not sure how many actually do. I've even seen one play fetch with a stuffed toy, and I thought that was amazing. Tried to teach Pogo but he wont do it, as he doesn't like to carry things in his mouth.

mrsqrk 10 months ago
Those tricks are awesome! In my experience, teaching tricks to a chin that hasn't developed a good social relationship with you is really difficult (e.g. one that you just bought from a store). My chinchilla just gave birth to two kits, and I'm thinking it'll be a lot easier to train the little ones since they've already warmed up to humans, although I'm not sure what the optimal age is to start the training. What's your take?
ChinTubeHD 10 months ago
@ChinTubeHD I actually got Pogo from a pet store when he was 3 months old. (really sad actually, they had the mom and 4 babies living in a fish tank, with a just a container to hide in) It took a while for him to get used to me. Younger chinchillas who have grown up around humans I think would definitely be easier to train. I would say around 6 months - 1 year is a good time to start training.

And that kiss trick was adorable! (:
Kjesusly 11 months ago
@Kjesusly Mine took a couple months to let me interact with him. Sometimes it will take a couple weeks, sometimes it can take a year or more before they fully trust you.

POGO IS SO CLEVER!!! i just got two chinnies (3 and 5 months old) a few weeks ago and still in the process of getting to know them! they dont like being held but i try to hold them for at least 5 mins every day and give them treats. I find the young one really hard to train, cos she only likes the sweet snacks!! I know it is not good for them if they have too much.. Do you have any other suggestions?? She is such a fussy eater!
yvonneyum 11 months ago
OMG !!! how do you train your chinchilla ?! thats amazing & and soooooooo cute <3
MsMsJackly 1 year ago
what do you use for treats?
dirkofyork 1 year ago
@dirkofyork one or two small treats a day. In this video I used a raisin broken into tiny tiny pieces. Other treats include one or two regular cheerios a day, half or a whole shreddie cereal piece, or a single rosehip, which are healthy and contain vitamin c. You can also give apple wood sticks, from a pet store.
