I visited this store when the Macy's takeover was near. I loved the elevators and escalators (especially the wooden ones). I was most amazed by the 2 dinning rooms. My favorite was Papa Fabarr's on the 2nd floor. Everything was original to 1913 down to tin molded cielings and wrought iron victorian ceiling fans. I hope Macy's keeps it open. In my hometown we have a related store, it was the original Foley's. Macy's is keeping it open but the restaurant closed before i was born.
Very cool! This reminds me of the Saks Fifth Ave. in NYC. I think there's 10 floors and the 10th is executive offices. It was so cool to ride in those elevators though.
Also, they should've kept those awesome touch sensitive buttons and the original floor indicator. :P
BB in this building stands for Basement Balcony, which housed the telephone orders department, the Terminal (registers) Service Group, the p.o. corrections people, phone operators and communications, and the EDP / IT dept.
If anyone goes to this store, try the French Onion Soup in the St. Louis Room. it is THE BEST to be had anywhere!
Yes, there is another bank of 6 elevators on the opposite side of the store, making 12 passenger elevators total to serve all floors. However, the only floors available for public use are 1 - 7. Back when I first visited this store back in the late 80's, floors BB - 12 were in use as sales floors. Also, the original wooden escalators are still in use between floors 5, 6, and 7.
Is this in downtown? I don't remember ever seeing a Macy's anywhere. One thing I have always hated about St. Louis: most hotels require keycards for elevators (Drury Plaza, Downtown Hilton, ect.) and most office buildings have high security.
Wow - that would be the biggest declining Macy's in the United States. I would hate an 8-story to shut down. What area of St. Louis is this store? West or east?
Did you noticed the bank of elevators on the other side of the store. Last time I was there, 2004 there was another bank of 6 elevators and they were also the Otis with touch sensitive buttons.
Montgomery must have gotten their hands on these, but they ARE Otis. But why do they need so many???

They dumbed down this store recently. It's only 3 floors now.

Nice elevator, but it's interesting to see the Montgomery indicator on an Otis elevator.
