I've loved this and the other Oscar Brand AF songs since I was a kid. My dad, a 26 year AF vet' had the albums in the 50s and I grew up with them. I went on to my own 21 year career in Uncle Sams Flying Circus (1967-1988) and have never forgotten these songs. Thanks for posting them!
To this day, when a attending a real Fighter Pilot's funeral or memorial service, it's an honor to throw a nickel on the grass to salute a fallen brother.
@rotundrooster I have known this song since I was a teenager, and to this day I have no idea what the throwing a nickle on the grass has to do with anything unless it is simply for the rhyme scheme.
You can find this on ebay now on cd. The album was called "Wild Blue Yonder." Dad had this one and "Out of the Blue" by Oscar Brand. Both were albums of Air Force drinking songs.
he actually went around collecting folks songs and he included fighter pilot songs in the engagement.
My father and his squadron, the 492nd in Lakenheath England and Brand visited them, recorded the songs they sang after missions at the bar. And that is the REAL STORY.
The parachute he hangs from on the album is a 492nd chute and the martini in his hand, given to him for his efforts.

I don't get the "throw a nickle on the grass, save a fighter pilots ass" thing...maybe just a tad slow.

Oscar Brand was not poking fun at the Air Force..
