i got some old ligustrum from a hedge, they are around 70 years old and are obviously interesting materials to work with. I think this video will help me. thank you!
How about an apprentice that is 110% dedicated to the art and one that is willing to put in years of study and/or do what ever it would take to learn what you have to offer. Also, how about one that happens to be a Yankee?
@GrahamWPotter :) actually i watched all the movies after eachother... amazing,.. sometimes, and im not lying, yaw dropping..
have a shelf full of bonsai books,..books by Peter Chan, Harry Tomlinson.. etc. etc.... but those videos learnt me more about techie stuff like the shari making and not to forget, wiring!! then al those books did the past years..
hey im just about to start taking up bonsai and i watched one video from you and now i cant stop good work your throwing alot of tips out there and if people dont take what your giving for free then shame on them thank you so mutch i realy want to go into it now im going to be starting from seed so is there any tips for ground bassed begginers seed begginers ?
This is absolutely amazing to me. I'm baby-new, wet-behind-the-ears when it comes to bonsai. When you started it looked like something I have in my backyard and am ready to dig up and stick in the compost bin. The end result was fantastic. It has opened my eyes to the greater possibilities of bonsai, not that I could ever attain those results. Keep up those amazing videos, I'll keep watching. I'm learning SO much.
That is amazing. I am just starting to become interested in bonsai and researching all about it. I could only hope to be a fraction as good as you. Do you have any advice for a beginner. I was thinking of starting with a ficus cause I know they are hardy, or a juinper.
The end result is ....... Mr. Graham awesome you the one God in this world, a visionary of the bonsai, the results I've seen videos lso WITHOUT WORDS! thank you I found a very great fondness, many thanks, from Gran Canaria, suo and a new fan of your work. for more you see the video and you can imagine how is the end. AWESOME.
No disrespect but i have to say my heart sank when the power tools came out and I never felt so sorry for a plant in my life! >< I think your the first person to have me feel that lol but I'm sure the tree is doing fine
Well, I realize now that the growth of the pre-bonzai tree is 5 years for a reason - that how long the art school gonna take to learn to sculpture a bag of crappy wood into a living masterpiece. Amazing work mate. Just amazing!
This is the first video of yours that I watched. I wouldn't give you two bucks for he tree in the beginning. The end result is AMAIZING!!!! Thank you.
Well, That is amazing what you ended up with. I'm just starting...trying seeds and I have cuttings to try, but to get something looking as awesome as what you managed there would be incredible. I'd be very proud of that. Well done.
Hey Mr. Potter, I just had a couple questions. First off though, you are an amazing bonsai artist. I am new to bonsai but I have looked at a lot of Youtube bonsai artists. You are the best. First question - For a branch to stay alive and thriving, is only the bark underneath it to the roots necessary for it to survive? Secondly - How long would a carving project like this take to complete?
@222Murman The bark directly below the branch is often BUT NOT ALWAYS entirely responsible for maintaining the branch. If in doubt cut a little and then allow the tree to adapt, in the following year cut some more....... In order to survive you need bark, cambium and sap wood. This carving project took less than an hour.
@GrahamWPotter Thanks so much. Your videos have been an amazing help. One last thing, would you recommend something very hardy like a common privet for indoor bonsai. or a tropical tree such as a ficus microcarpa.
now that truly is art. its like a little woodland fairy home. I had no idea this could be done... and I have such a stump out back :D If mine turns out half as cool as yours, I'll be happy. THANKS for showing us!
That's really quite spectacular Mr. Potter. I'm about 1/3 of the way through your clips, I guess the question that I most would like answered is, "Where do you get your material?" Do you run a tree service, or something?
I just think it's incredible how you can have a tree like that and even start to invisage anything like what it turned out to be.Guess that's the secret to bonsai that just comes with the many years of experience you have!I doff my cap to you sir! Please keep the vids coming as they're the most informative I've seen on the net.Regards
Wow. Really nice work, Graham! You took an absolutely ugly piece of material that almost anyone would have discounted, and made it into a work of art. It looks like the Keebler elves could come crawling out of that tree any moment! Spectacular vision. You are my inspiration!
Incredible! Only way to describe it. Do you see the finished product before you start the project? Or just have a basic idea of what you want to accomplish?
Hi Graham is that the terrier bit your using? Its taking off a lot of wood really quickly. I'm using your weasel 100 right now on my dremel for a lot of the rough work. Works great but I wanted a bit to take out wood as quickly as you did in the video. Is it also because of the higher powered power tool?
Mind Blown.

Hi Graham!
Kudos to you!
Im considering doing the same thing you do in this video.
But what kind of tools are you using?
Is your drill equipment expensive?
What brand is it,maybe it sells here in sweden too.

doens't that destroy the cambium? it seems that the plant would not be able to take up nutrients and soon die. how is it doing now?
