Nothing can replace the thrill of watching her in person with the Sky Pilot Choir behind her at the church in Los Angeles. It was converted from the old ALTO theatre on south Western Ave. just below Manchester Blvd. Rev. Aubry Lee was the pastor. We went there every chance we got. Also the Church of the Open Door on Hope St. in downtown LA. Used to go and see Phil Kerr down there. Great childhood memories!

I think she was laughing at the way Jake (2nd from the right) was clapping his hands on his thighs. Jake took a lot of criticizing about his needles hand gestures and his eyes. Mostly from well meaning people (pharisees if you will) and was self contious about it.

She was African American, but yes there was some mixed ancestry there...

It was the "one drop" that originated during slavery times by white supremacists to keep their gene pool "pure". Sadly this mentality exists in some people today. Look it up.

I agree 'bout Mahalia, but depending on the song, I also hear "Ella." Less on the 'belting' songs as on the slower 'clear-as-a-bell' pieces. According to the (rare) accounts of her church in LA, you might find Billy Preston on the Hammond. Can you imagine?? Wow!
