  • Nothing can replace the thrill of watching her in person with the Sky Pilot Choir behind her at the church in Los Angeles. It was converted from the old ALTO theatre on south Western Ave. just below Manchester Blvd. Rev. Aubry Lee was the pastor. We went there every chance we got. Also the Church of the Open Door on Hope St. in downtown LA. Used to go and see Phil Kerr down there. Great childhood memories!

  • bellissimo

  • Jake Hess oh yeah.....Love this toe tappin gospel music....Love black gospel tool

  • Now thats some awesome singin :)

  • this is the type of music I grew up on. There are other reditions with Doris and her choir you can look up for fun if you like. Enjoy:)

  • Wonderful! Doris was a blessing!!!

  • I love it. Thanks for the post!

  • Right away I thought of Nancy Harmon.

Sounds just like Nancy Harmon music!

(or Nancy sounds just like Doris!)

  • Is that Gary McSpadden standing next to Armand Morales on the right?

Young Jake Hess resembles Bela Lugosi.

  • True talent, and she used it for the Lord's work.

  • She sound a lot like Nancy Harmen or Nancy sounds like Doris, anyway sounds good to me, TO GOD BE THE GLORY.

  • oh beautiful first the fact this is the first video of her ive seen...The Imperials hitting it right on key too..they're all so involved with the song..which makes them perform it so well!

  • Its funny how they all had their hands and feet tappin'! I wonder what Doris was laughing at? LOL

  • I think she was laughing at the way Jake (2nd from the right) was clapping his hands on his thighs. Jake took a lot of criticizing about his needles hand gestures and his eyes. Mostly from well meaning people (pharisees if you will) and was self contious about it.

  • This is just too awesome!! I can't believe how young they all look (: And this song is one of my favorite Doris songs, it's so catchy and moving, and really makes you want to praise God! <3

  • she has one of them voices like Mahalia. but is she mixed?

  • She was African American, but yes there was some mixed ancestry there...

  • @karma342 just curious are you under any circumstances considered white if you are mixed? seems if you have any black blood you are considered black , but not so if you have white blood? explain please

  • @plflowers5

It was the "one drop" that originated during slavery times by white supremacists to keep their gene pool "pure". Sadly this mentality exists in some people today. Look it up.

  • @karma342 I really didn't know that until last year! She was a blessing to all!!

  • I agree 'bout Mahalia, but depending on the song, I also hear "Ella." Less on the 'belting' songs as on the slower 'clear-as-a-bell' pieces. According to the (rare) accounts of her church in LA, you might find Billy Preston on the Hammond. Can you imagine?? Wow!

  • Sheer joy! You just know she is truly feeling the spirit as she sings.

  • This is one of my favorite sings from Doris Akers :3

    It wonderful! :3

  • I didn't know Doris sang with the Imperials :-D Wonderful!
