I thought your weight was supposed to stop immediately as you closed, not shift forward and back. And bluecoats marches bent-leg like Cavvies i guess?
Uh no! Your feet should come off of the ground! just sayin. When backwards marching you have to point with the foot your pushing off with, then flex your other foot as it comes backwards(comes off the ground completely). Then with the foot that is coming back aready point it to push your weight back and flex the other foot as it goes back. This should really take the bump and quiver out of your sound. Please check out the North Shore Senior High band 2010&2011(my band) to see the difference.
I think you need to work on your back marching.. Try to not drag your feet as much, then that results into a bouncy tone, and of course, you want a straight shot tone :)
@TheCodygiles Thats weird. at my school, they tell us our feet should never come fully off the ground. they say drag your feet, but stay on the platforms of your foot and not on the back of the foot.
@moomiss They shouldn't totally leave the ground, but if you're dragging your feet and making the scratchy sound on the pavement, you can imagine what your tone and playing is going to sound like.
Just like trying to play a horn in the back of a truck on sand dunes.. it doesn't sound good AT ALL.
