I'm completely undecided on whether to get an MPC 500 or a Roland 404(sx) - would you recommend a 404 over an mpc for a beginner hardware sampling person?
@PulpCultMusic it was the mpc1000. If I had had the patience and spent about a month or two getting to know it, I may have ended up loving it, but it turned out life's too short :)
@dacelts34 you are right, it sounds a bit backwards :) But it depends on what you want your sampler to do, right? The roland is just easier and more immediate to get going with.
@jtvilla73 yup all free samples. Try to google 'free kalimba samples' or free marimba sampes' and you'd be surprised with what you can get. I can't remember exactly where I got mine, but it was from doing just that. GL ;)"
i'm trying to understand how these work. is there a different mode for patterns rather than just samples. could i play samples over a pattern i recorded. thank you1
@AndyTabelz hey there. Yes there is a different mode for patterns. You record a pattern by combining or playing samples. When a pattern is playing, it'll loop until you stop it. In that time you can play samples over it all you want.
@Squeeney I was deciding between the two as well. There's a couple of things you need to decide before you choose, I think: Do you want a mini production machine, where you can sequence everything (MPC), or just something to bang some samples into and play with(SP-404SX)? I found the MPC1000 an impossible machine coming from software, the interface seems primitive and everything takes ages, samples load time. The SP-404SX, can do a bit less, but it's so easy to use and a lot of fun!
And my other problem with it is that I was hoping to line in and line out the 404 into my digital recorder. That's where what my speakers are hooked up to (the recorder) and it would be ideal to be able to sample my recordings off of the digital recorder and then run the samples back into the recorder to be integrated into songs. The problem is, when I set it up like this it's just feedback. I kind of expected that w/ the signal running into itself but is there any way around it?
@MattyStevensonBishop you should use the mini RCA plugs to connect both in an out signals to your sampler. But I'm not sure about feeding the signal into itself. Maybe someone else can advise on that one :)
I just got one of these and I'm having a hard time lining in instruments. I'm a little bit familiar with the 303 and I'm pretty sure you're able to connect guitars, bass, etc directly into the mic jack on that one, is it the same w/ the 404 SX? I can't find any reference to lining in instruments of any kind. Is there any way to do this?
Nice piece of kit, and really enjoyed the song as well!
I don't know if this would interest you, but we are currently doing a competition based on creating a video review of a music product with the chance of winning up to £150 off new gear. Give me a shout if you're interested and I'll message you the link, or join us on facebook (/absolutemusicuk) and get the details off there. Closing date is 17th Novemeber! Keep up the good work :)
Nice video, but if you're dubbing over the track you made in Logic, this is completely useless as a demo of the SP-404SX. Unless I'm missing something?
@skyskraberen: you're right, I was probably being overly harsh. And you clearly say that you overdubbed. When I watched this I was contemplating buying the SP-404SX so I was strictly looking for a demo, which of course isn't your problem. I've since ordered one, can't wait to start playing with it.
@wrybread no worries, it's definitely not a demo video ;) Great to hear that you've ordered one for yourself, I'm sure you'll be very pleased with it! Maybe we get to see you videos up here soon ;)
Wow, with this video you convinced me that the sp404 is worth the money. So much better than all the other vids of people making crappy beats with it.
Hi dude, nice stuff, kind of what I'm getting into right now...
I have a question for you. I'm thinking of getting this little toy soon and I wanted to know if you can write on the integrated loops or beats so as to gain free space to sample your own stuff, or you can only do it on some specific banks...
I'd really appreciate your answer...thanks very much a a big hello from Chile.
@martinpescadormusica Hi Ariel, thanks for your comment. The samples and loops that come on the SD memory card with the SP-404SX are really easy to delete and overwrite. They are ok, but it's more fun to make your own , which is really the point of the machine.
You can also anytime buy a new memory card so you can have endless sample time. Good luck with your new toy, I'm sure you'll love it.
