It's amazing how many online videos are not captioned. I am most surprised that I have seen Superbowl commercials in the recent past that were not captioned - think about all the missed opportunities to convey an expensive message to hearing consumers watching on soundless TVs at gyms, airports, and so on, and to consumers with hearing loss? Also, to play the devil's advocate, I wonder what your thoughts would be if the law required that all signed videos online include voice for hearing people?
WAIT!!!!! Hold on, I love you to bits, but you know some people like me, we WANT to CC, but it's hard to learn. I am trying to learn. I am trying. I cannot get the hang of it, or I talk too much or too fast, I am not a hypocrite, I just have trouble. Don't be so quick to call someone a hypocrite.
Oh no.. not sure if you understand, it was toward to a group of people who made some nasty videos/comments toward me only because I offered captions on my ASL videos. But yet these same people who complains due to lack of captioning for shows, movies and news.
That's what I say they are hypocrite.
As for personal videos like youtube, etc, that is everyone's choice. It's just mainly toward to news mostly online cuz they are important for us to be aware of that needs CC. :-D
*whew* I'm sorry to go off on you, I should have asked you specifically first, what you meant. I'm frustrated but that is no reason to go off on someone I like. I hope you will accept my apology.
Of course we do! i agree with you 100%. I mean that's how i learn English in the first place using CC watching tv (my native language is Spanish and Italian) and now since i am hoh deaf i still use CC on tv and it will be awesome if they use that online now since everyone is getting more into online vidoes such as youtube, and hulu...that's just my thoughts..
I agree with you 100%. I think all videos, shows, movies, online should b e online. I get frustrated with what some of them say.
I rent a lot of movies and I saw that some of the newer movies aren't even in captions! I was applaud and shock to say the least, I told the people who worked there that ALL movies are suppose to be captions and t hat it is the law. They didn't know this.
I am sadden that some hearing people aren't getting the message.
The Act is about making sure that what is on TV and [CC] is also [CC] on the Internet. So it's not about government control of anything. It's about maintaining equal access to information in the age when information and entertainment is moving from TV to the Internet. Do you see what I am saying? Technology and times are changing, and law needs to change to reflect that. The old laws do not provide equal access to Deaf people anymore.
Ah.. too many people out there are just hypocrites. They'd say things and never do it. I never forgot these days when I was attacked by others saying stop putting captions in ASL videos. But yet they bitch about demanding captions for all movies, talk about hypocrite people. LOL
I completely agree with u as the reason for it. the deaf who needs Captions online. it is mostly no captions online who hungry to know what a news and etc...
I will share this with friends & family to increase awareness. I credit YOU completely as the reason I've started captioning my videos... You are making a difference- one YouTuber at a time :)
I use Overstream, too. It took a bit of playing to feel comfortable w/ it, but it's not too difficult to use. (I just talk fast, so sync the time takes the most work) I'm w/ family this weekend, but I'll try and come up with a quick & dirty tutorial in a couple days as well. Feel free to msg me if you need help! =)
I completely agree. I would not understand your messages without the captions and I thank you for having them. On a side note I used to date a girl from india who enjoyed watching punjabi programs and she was polite enough to turn on captions for me aswell. Not much I can do myself but lend my support.
i agree with you i wish more people would put subtitles on there videos like you do about 2 months ago the subtitles stoped working on my tv for awhile had to watch tv with no subtitles on
Ah.. good question about using annotation as captions, not sure if people would have liked it because all I know is that open captioned is not quite popular these days, ha ha.
It is never hurt to give it a try, I just never thought of using annotations as captions to be quite honest. :-)
Good point, I had asked YTAdvocate to use annotations because they never showed their faces. It worked quicker than if they tried CC with Overstream. As long as I can understand. But I do feel hypocritical.
I also suggest that if you want to see a very compelling testimony on behalf of this Act, look at the COAT website and follow links to watch Russell Harvard (Deaf actor from the film There Will Be Blood) provide a thorough and thoughtful explanation of why it is so necessary to a congressional committee. I tried to post it on YouTube, but couldn't figure out how.
Thanks for letting me know on that one and also there is another good video by Joseph which I just posted on my blog regarding internet captioning.. check it out. :-)
Oh my goodness, yes, yes, yes, 100%. I've been putting the COAT Access website on my Facebook, putting up videos from NAD, etc. to point out how important this Act is, and how all people need to support it. THANK YOU for doing this vlog. This Act failed to pass last year, we NEED to have it become law.
I hate videos without CC that taken away from getting an information, you know, that non-captioned videos are worthless piece of paper poop.

Also I talk so fast and too much, while I notice, with CC you are paced. Do you speak faster in person and slow down for vids?

Re: false captioning, once I was watching X-Files on tv and someone put Mulder saying "Scully take off your shirt." I was not amused.

I agree that move things online should be captioned however I oppose a law requiring it.
My personal belief is that the government should not have control over what is and isn't on the internet.

Hey River,
As soon as the time permits next week or two if I can, I will make a video showing how to caption using overstream. :-D

Bless your heart, that would be great for all of us, both hearing, deaf, and hoh. I keep reading the directions and the tutorial. Maybe I'm dense.

I'm going to urge all hearing to walk around one day with cotton in their ears, or watch TV with no sound and no captions.
