What a great treat! I was in the Australian production, with Eve Arden and Brooks West (Eve's husband in real life). We managed to throw Eve around quite a bit in the same number. Her rendition of 'Welcome To The Theatre' was wonderful. I was side stage for it every night. Thanks!

Oh My Lordy-Lauren Bacall as margot Channing- the musical no less-Im in heaven- does any one know who did the choreography?? Michael Bennet maybe?? just amazing <3
Wow this just blew my socks off , I remember many of drag queens doing this song and they were great, but never knew the actual set up where and why this puts it all together thanks so much
@dynamicduonyc I remember starting to watch this as a kid. I'd loved the album, but I found this disappointing. Apart from the flat videotaped look and the fact that -- I could be misremembering this -- that they cut some of the songs out.
I need to turn in my gay card. I never knew Applause was the musical version of All about Eve. The next thing I'll hear is that Stephen Sondheim was gay!
@diego9774 I knew that. I was making a joke. :-) Did you know his lover of many years was Anthony Perkins who was later married to Berry Berenson, sister of Marissa Berenson? Berry was killed on one of the 9/11 planes that hit the World Trade Center.
I never knew this existed....I've seen clips of Lauren Bacall from the Tony's but not this....ever !!! GREAT RARE find !!! BTW to the person claiming a more liberal age before Reagan, Nixon was in the white house at the time. But ya know, Nixon may have been more Liberal in a liberal sense. LOL
This is, I assume, from the televsion version of the show. Do you have it complete? If so, could you PLEASE post Bacall singning "Welcome to the Theater"? I saw the show twice at the Palace Theater with Bacall, and once when Anne Baxter replaced her.
I remember being so thrilled watching this on TV, as I knew I'd never get to see it otherwise. I believe it was filmed in London while she was doing the show there. Can anybody verify that?
Actually, according to legend, it was the very young Andy Williams who provided the singing voice for Bacall in her first film "To Have and Have Not". Not true, as it turns out. I hadn't heard about Merv Griffin, but I suspect this is also a myth resulting from Bacall's distinctive deep voice.
What a fun video. When I was living and working in NYC as an actress I saw this show on B'way and one of the cast members, LeRoy Reams lived above me at my apt. Often he'd have the cast over after the show and they'd play the piano and sing all night...Bacall too. FUN!
Lovely anecdote. I have had the fortune of seeing Lee Roy in 3 shows. He's a great stage presence. He played Duane who unfortunately had left the show by the time this was filmed. This clip is so wonderful. As a long time Bacall fan it's a real gem.
I saw Bacall do this on Broadway. A year later when she left to do the tour, she was replaced by Anne Baxter the original Eve Harrington. Although initially seen as a casting ploy, Baxter got wonderful reviews.
The third B'way replacement was Arlene Dahl-- not so good. I think Eleanor Parker did one of the tours.
I'm surprised this was aired on Network TV with the gay bar scene intact..I mean even though we were busting down barriers with shows like 'All in the Family' and 'Maude'..this is a pleasant surprise
Good Lord, can you believe she did this eight performances for the run of the show -- which was not brief!!! Another star that deserves every accolade she ever got!!!
I have heard this track more than once. Knowing, now, what the setting for this track makes it so much more fun to listen to! it reminds me what Connie Stevens said once. She basically said if it hadn't been fun what would all her work in entertainment been for. Thanks, dynamic!
I can't believe I've found this finally! I remember seeing the dragqueen lypsinka do a version of this at wigstock years ago - I wrote to him asking him if he would tell me the name of the track and he wrote back saying how he liked to keep his material to himself!!!!! Not nice!
Lauren Bacall is my 2nd cousin and thats not her real name... I love her she is so awsome! your hair is indeed awesome!!!! muah. Also, my friends recommend ★gaysinglehunt (dot) com to me, they told me they share everything with gay friends there.
The Paley Center has this. It's over the top but is great fun. Of course, you have one last chance to see Christine Ebersole do it at City Center tonight!
That was awesome!! "But Alive" was the first song I loved on this album. When my old friend (and mentor in much of classic film and stage) showed me the LP and told me it was the musical version of "All About Eve" I thought he was putting me on. When I saw the LP in a used record store I jumped on it and very soon knew almost every song by heart. I'm SO looking forward to the day they release this on dvd!
Bought back memories,I saw this lady get 20 minutes standing ovation at the first preview, her first time on a british stage doing APPLAUSE.how fab to see a bit of it again.GIMIGIMIJIMI.
God, what a thrill. Seeing that remarkable woman and that remarkable scene again. They sure don't make stars like that any more!!! She, Angela Lansbury, Chita Rivera. Do musicals get any better. Thanks so much for posting this masterpiece!!!
oh my god! this takes me back a long long way!! Thank you for posting it. It is Wonderful!!!! Saw Bacall do it at Her Majestys Theatre in London in ....well many years ago.............Fabulous. Thanks
the person who played Eve opposite her in that production is playing fraulein schneider at the moment in Cabaret at the lyric. One of the best I've ever seen, I'd say she's right up there with Sheila Hancock. Finally a schneider who's commanding and can belt. :P
It must have been a later viewing of this number that convinced Betty to sing again in THE FAN (1981), featuring Michael Biehn's first major film role.
I met LB when I saw the original cast in 1971 (my first Broadway play at age 13) I have listened to the OBC recording for years, never thought I'd ever see it again, even this less than stellar TV version. A billion thanks!
Thanks for making me feel OLD.... I was in a production of "Applause" in (gasp!) 1973. I was the goofy dancer sucking on his finger...the scene ended with me announcing that "...I really love HER!" and then a couple of the leather dudes carried me offstage while I was screaming "Margo! Margo!". Ah, the folly of youth...
And let's not forget that there is even a song in the production titled "Fasten Your Seat Belts"....
the comment that this program only aired once is incorrect - it first aired in early 73 (about 3 yrs after its Bway opening) and was repeated in the summer of 74 - it's a treat for me to see it again after also seeing the original prod 3 times - one can only wish for a dvd release
