I had forgotten how big(not tall) Putski was.I mean his arms are huge.Ah,the golden age of wrestling in my opinion.Take care.I think wrestling today is a pale imitation of wrestling from this era.
@PlayboyofWrestling I agree. I also must add, Adonis had some classic bloody battles with Bob Backlund in the 80s. His tag team with Dick Murdoch seemed odd at first, but ended up a winner in their battles against Rotundo/Windham. Adonis was a tough guy. He didn't do his "Adorable" gimmick until the end of his life--and even then he sold tons of tickets. Great wrestler. He was better than any of today's guys by a long shot.
Its still all KAyfabe.. Always was.. Now a wrestler working stiff is another thing.. (Greg Valentine and Brody had reputations for that).. Its not "fake" as in they dont hit each other for real at times but it is "fake" in that its not a real fight as presented...
Nobody cussed more or louder than the Great Ivan Putski...........Can hear him now saying........" Gawdamn I Need A Lollipop " LoL......He was way ahead of his time. He was Stonecold Steve Austin before it was cool.........
wrestling wasn't always as "fake" as people thought. Some guys would intentionally hit/chop as hard as possible, because it sold their product. The guy on the receiving end had to learn to grit his teeth and take the pain for the sake of making it look "real." Gene Anderson (speaking of gritting teeth) had his teeth knocked out by Wahoo McDaniel when Wahoo landed a tomahawk chop. You can't "fake" that. It may have been "planned," but it was hardly "fake."
When I watched him wrestle in person , a smart promoter made sure to never allow Putski to lose PHYSICALLY. He might lose OFFICIALLY (disq or his tag partner got pinned) but Ivan had to hit or beat on the retreating opponent to keep a riot from ensuing following the bout. he was that popular. When he won, he had to have flattened the opponent, not out manuevered him with a fancy pin as well. This helped define Ivan Putski. His toughest opponent i ever saw was on tv. It was Bugsy Mcgraw.
Putski definitely had a way of making you pay attention! He was great...I used to love how he'd always steal the microphone from the ring announcer and shout whatever was on his mind---usually "POOOOLISH POOOWWERRRR!!!"
They knocked the hell out of each other. It wasn't a "conventional" wrestling match at all. It looked like a Hulk Hogan styled match. Ten minute time limit. Oh certainly a wild evenly matched bout of one nature or another. Mainly slugging.
That would be early 1970s Putski! He was fat (weighed over 300 lbs.) but very much into power lifting. That is not too unbelievable for any other wrestler or power lifter--but you had to consider that Ivan was only 5'8" tall (short) and weighed 300. Yet, he was VERY STRONG. So, when he finally decided to "cut up/get ripped," he dieted, dropped 30 pounds of fat, and became the chiseled physique from the late 70s through the 80s! Most pro bodybuilders look like the fat Putski before dieting.
Definitely will not disagree with what you said. But a lot of people judge on looks alone based on the Adonis comment. I think his problem was more medical, because he could still move around the ring and was very agile. I believe Adonis was 5' 11".
"Polish Power" Ivan Putski is one of my favorite wrestlers ever he is one of the many reasons I want to get into the sport. I am going to make my gimmck similar to his.
I don't know that I'd call it a "gimmick." It was more his real persona--and who he really was. Even so, he's a good role model to have if you want to do wrestling. Unfortunately, "wrestling" today isn't what it was when I grew up in the 70s and 80s. Now, EVERYBODY has a gimmick and there is more talk, no wrestling, and the business is exposed.
Adrian was supposed to try the sunset flip, only to have Ivan block it and hit the bombs away (dropping onto Adrian's chest) for the pin, but Adrian could not reach Ivan's legs, so Ivan dropped on him for the win.
Adonis was amazing! He coulda had a great match with a broomstick! And even a half decent one with Putski! Adonis was definitely in the top 5 heel workers of his time along with Flair, Orton, Muraco and Slaughter. And now that I look at him in his leather gear, complete with choker, I don't know why I was ever surprised when he stated wearing a dress! LOL!
i think adonis's streetfighhter gimmick was the greatest gimmick ever in wrestling, ironically adonis also had maybe the worst gimmick ever when he did the gay cross dresser garbage.
They screwed up the ending, and that includes the ref, who I think was Lou Sopa. That guy always looked like they dressed up an actual bum in a ref outfit.
The poor fans probably would've been horrified if they knew what he'd look like 8 years later. By 1990, Adrian had already been dead for two years. He was probably quite thin.
I share a similar body type as Adrian (Keith Franke) Adonis. From the start he was built, but you can see he's far from the thin ectomorph type. Its probably a combination of age, genetics, bad diet and maybe even some sort of side effects from drugs,
also, he sold for his opponents and knew how to put people over. I have a WWF battle royal posted on youtube where Adonis steals the show with his back flips, forward flips, etc. He did not win the Battle Royal, but he sure did sell. He was a great wrestler and sorely missed.
