I could remember when 'GN station IDs (globe flash-morphing to 2-D circle 9) boasted 24/7 programming well before informercials made 24/7 ops the rule. They even had a still ID with the "Solidarność" logo.
we received WGN on my cable system back home in Columbus GA as early as 1976. We also got WTCG now WTBS from Atlanta and WANX out of Atlanta which is now the CBS affiliate there although at the time it was owned by one Pat Robertson and was an independent station. How time flies,
great post. hope you can find the station identification logo that went with this RW last farewell piece. the letters circled "WGN", then revolved around it.
It's sad..this YT channel called FuzzyTVMemories had all of the old WGN clips up,even the ones from WGN Presents,When Movies Were Movies,Nightbeat and The Sunday Matinee but had to pull them off!
@soln4suhreborn go to youtube and type in ''late night movie will return'' and you will see a few of the 80's wgn movie intro's. Unfortunately, this is all that's on youtube.
WOW!! talk about a blast from the past!! WGN was one of the stations my local cable system in Columbus, GA carried in the mid 70's so I remember all of those logos very well. Thanks for sharing
I had NO IDEA that cable companies were carrying WGN that early and millions of people throughout the country were enjoying Channel 9. Here in Mississippi WGN as well as the OLD Superstation WTBS and WOR 9 New York were all carried by our cable providers during the early-mid 80's.
we also got WTBS then WTCG on our cable system as well as WANX channel 46 out of Atlanta which at the time was an independent station and owned by Pat Robertson. I have fond memories of both stations as well as WGN. I used to watch both Bozo and Romper Room on WGN and plenty of cartoons on WANX such as Heckle & Jeckle, Mighty Mouse, etc... Ah those were the days...
We had cable as early as 1975 and those channels were all carried at the time.
Very cool! This is back in the good ole days when we Chicago kids would watch WGN and WFLD for fun. You actually had to stand up and turn the dial on the television - imagine that!
WSNS 44 was good also, but I lived so far out on the South Side it was hard to get 44 sometimes, you'd have to live closer to downtown to pick up 44 good. TV in Chicago in the 70's and 80's was so cool-you'd never know when a real GOOD movie was gonna pop up! Even Ch 2 and Ch 7 showed some great movies especially after midnight!
I can agree with that. Although I lived in Chicago, LONG after this had been gone for some time, I still enjoyed the various stations that Chicago has.
i feel you! i started watching WSNS around 1976, with The MarvelMania Superheroes; which aired at 12 noon and 3:30p, those were the days. WGN and WFLD were so much fun!
@soln4suhreborn we talked about old wgn bumpers and so forth once before. Also on youtube is an old commercial bumper from WGN in the 80's I remember you might enjoy.Type in quilted norther commercial, 1987. Enjoy.
No problem! I grew up on WGN 9. The Bozo Show,Ray Rayner, the movie show Frazier Thomas used to host (I think it was called "Family Classics",Charlie Chan on Sundays," WGN Presents","When Movies Were Movies" and Soul Train. Now that WGN is another generic "superstation" and ran into the ground by the CW,it's just another blah-blah station with the same shows everyone else has and those gawd-awful infomercials. man I miss the 80's.
The 9 with the WGN writeen into it was from the 60's.

Didn't WGN have an id that used the theme from "Superman"?
ebf1957 1 year ago
@ebf1957 No,it was WCIU channel 26 that used the Superman theme in the station ID. It's posted here on YT.

@soln4suhreborn Actually, I think WGN did use part of the Superman theme also!

youtube:''we're a part of Chicago'' lou rawls. I'm suprised it's on youtube, since WGN had removed most of the old promos from the 80's.

Chicago had the best TV in the world in my opinion. There was a little something for everybody and it was never boring.
Thanks for checking my clip out!
