@NightWolfEditing As I said... "Any decent home router will do fine".
I did not say cheap routers are fine. If you have a 100mbits+ on the router's wan port and everything is set up properly I don't see how your improving speed compared with a good router. And what adblocking are you using on the routing PC that will remove embedded adverts in flash videos the same way that Adblock+ can in Firefox?
7:50. Ive been having toruble finding a powersupply like this. I might be using the wrong key words. if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be very much appreciated. THanks in advance.
next time dont use make up! :D. Just use a piece of paper en press holes in it where the mounting points are. Then press the paper on the plastic plate en mark the holes on it. Tadaaaa thats it!
@ Keinichn cool, yea i want to build a wireless router one because my dlink reception sucks, maybe building one of these would help get my wireless around my apt.
Some what expensive router there unless reuseing old hardware, cheaper just to pick up a used n band router from a swapmeet. Swapping out the the RAM chip, Utilizeing the SPI pinouts to mod in SD memory capability, and overclock the hell out of it. Also the i wouldnt underestimate ARM Processors, A8' to A15 series are equilivent to intels ATOM, only real advantage the atom has over the a15 is the x86-64 architecture
@wesk18 A ton more customization. Commercial routers lock out or dumb down the majority of options available. For example, I can't configure remote booting on my PC because my router drops IP addresses from the ARP table when the device is off for 5 minutes despite using a static IP on the system and IP to MAC reservation in the router. With a set up such as the one in the video, I could configure a permanent ARP route that doesn't get dropped when the device is turned off.
I was thinking that if you don't need that chip you could buy a used pc for $100 and that would have a case just get one of the old screen sit on top pcs
no offence or hating here Darren but this was a waste of time... I love the show and all but 45mins to connect a hdd to a mobo and install smoothwall is a bit excessive.
you could have done this in 10 mins.
anyway, the idea is good. i have a spare dell pentium 4 box lying around may turn it into a router something that had never crossed my mind before, for that i thank you but still you may want to bring episode lengths down to 20 - 30 mins.
hi darren, great work!! i like this DIY stuff... made me go directly on eBay and buy a uATX for a kick-ass router!! :P been watching Hak5 vids for almost 2 months now... and I must say that I'm really lovin the show!! well done and keep it up!
please PLEASE don't encourage building computers with plexiglass or without shielded cases. Computers are incredibly good noisy radio transmitters and need to be shielded to avoid interference to other radio services. Or at least shield your computer room with tin foil so I don't have to hear your computers. I know it is fun to build with plexiglass and applaud DIY but this is not good engineering. Not highly likely but this kind of construction could even hamper public safety communications.
@jayluketa Yeah i got a litlle confused there, My Tigin modem keeps resetting under load and i am looking for a way simmilar to this to replace my modem but the fiber part seems to be a problem!
@klubbis you got a make, model number and your ISP name I can check into it for ya. If you play with the software on the modem most definitely you'll be looking for a new ISP :-)
All u need is paper and a pencil, do the shading thing the tap the paper to the board your cutting on grid paper would been good for this project. u get a impression of the thing and hit each hole perfectly. but the makeup trick he used was funny~easy.
I prefer a neat AlixBoard over a Atom Processor because I just don't the processing power for my router. I have a few VPN sessions open and use it as download and small webserver.
hurfdurf lets use a consumer hard drive and a mini-itx board to make a router im a retard. Oh yeah and smoothwall as the shit icing on the shitcake. Just fucking buy a ~$100 router with dual-band N, gigabit ports including WAN, and NAS connectivity and put Tomato/DD-WRT on it If you wan't decent parts for a homebuilt one you'll spend about as much.
What I get or don't get is completely irrelevant to the fact that the host of this internet computery type show thing is not very good at what he does.
I say scrap the IDE drive in favor of an IDE Flash Module. I used 1GB Flash Modules running DSL linux in a small cluster project I built. Much larger modules are available.
@brootdoom Or do like we did with coins as kids - lay paper on the mount of the HD, rub a pencil over the 3 sides and you have a drill template. No need for paint, lipstick, etc.

@videogamer1010 I think they were prototypes, and only the number 5 that worked and was released.

@videogamer1010 Haks 1, 2, and 3 were sabotaged and destroyed before completion, Hak4 disappeared without a trace 24 hours before it first aired...
