  • consider yourself berated.

  • am i the only oen who noticed the video feed on the far right monitor in the background?

  • can u use a wireless usb adapter as a interface

  • to mark the hard drive just stick on elecrical tape mark the holes then remove it and stick it on the motherboard

  • MACS FTW!

  • So, what happened to Hak4, 3, 2, and 1?

  • @videogamer1010 I think they were prototypes, and only the number 5 that worked and was released.

  • @videogamer1010 Haks 1, 2, and 3 were sabotaged and destroyed before completion, Hak4 disappeared without a trace 24 hours before it first aired...

  • next time dont use make up! :D. Just use a piece of paper en press holes in it where the mounting points are. Then press the paper on the plastic plate en mark the holes on it. Tadaaaa thats it!

  • @nickboyz i usually use a template as well.

  • how do i learn more about the hacking world? i'm interested in this kind of thing.

Would you suggest classes at a community college? or can i read up on it somewhere on the great internet?

  • @ Keinichn cool, yea i want to build a wireless router one because my dlink reception sucks, maybe building one of these would help get my wireless around my apt.

  • BOW TO MY FIREWALL!!!@!!11

    :0

  • Some what expensive router there unless reuseing old hardware, cheaper just to pick up a used n band router from a swapmeet. Swapping out the the RAM chip, Utilizeing the SPI pinouts to mod in SD memory capability, and overclock the hell out of it. Also the i wouldnt underestimate ARM Processors, A8' to A15 series are equilivent to intels ATOM, only real advantage the atom has over the a15 is the x86-64 architecture

  • im running a n ADSL modem and router in one iam buliding a router like yours can i get a int dsl modem for pci if so can i run it in this router?

  • gentoo has some kind of cow but the distro is kind of socking.

  • In Eurepe, we are measuring before drilling or cutting. :)

  • So we can just use an old PC lying around, add an NIC that works with smooth and thats it oO? mad

  • what do i achieve by using this as a router instead of those commercial ones?

  • @wesk18 A ton more customization. Commercial routers lock out or dumb down the majority of options available. For example, I can't configure remote booting on my PC because my router drops IP addresses from the ARP table when the device is off for 5 minutes despite using a static IP on the system and IP to MAC reservation in the router. With a set up such as the one in the video, I could configure a permanent ARP route that doesn't get dropped when the device is turned off.

  • justin beiber probly uses a Mac.

  • @sharpfang667 maybe thats why hes so dumb..........

  • if you dont have a smoothwall cd then you go download it you m0r0n smoothwall[dot]org

  • if you dont have a smoothwall cd then you go download it you m0r0n smoothwall[dot]org/

  • wtf

  • @jeffneely2012 Google is your friend, or look up the shownotes at hak5.org

  • @jeffneely2012 Google is your friend

  • I wish matt was in more episodes.

  • 12:00 fayul :D

  • I love your job man. Lucky bastard :D

  • Shannon's fucking sexy lol ;D This shows the shit! it shows me the way to the light on technology :D

  • i hate to be a bad commenter but i think its Alfa particles in smoke alarm (i know is was a joke) but it wont even travel 4cm in the air,

YAY I actualy learnt something in science

  • bust two nuts in it.hahaha that's what she said.

  • yhea what happend to wess he did some bad ass shit

  • i used a full-size computer and a 4-port router card. WORKS SWEET!!!!

  • RRD

  • Nice episode. Building a custom setup is awesome !

  • I was thinking that if you don't need that chip you could buy a used pc for $100 and that would have a case just get one of the old screen sit on top pcs

  • MW2

    :(

  • no offence or hating here Darren but this was a waste of time... I love the show and all but 45mins to connect a hdd to a mobo and install smoothwall is a bit excessive.

you could have done this in 10 mins.

anyway, the idea is good. i have a spare dell pentium 4 box lying around may turn it into a router something that had never crossed my mind before, for that i thank you but still you may want to bring episode lengths down to 20 - 30 mins.

  • @raf1qu3 half of its advertising and a quarter is explaining. stop bragging :L

  • hi darren, great work!! i like this DIY stuff... made me go directly on eBay and buy a uATX for a kick-ass router!! :P been watching Hak5 vids for almost 2 months now... and I must say that I'm really lovin the show!! well done and keep it up!

  • will it work with att

  • please PLEASE don't encourage building computers with plexiglass or without shielded cases. Computers are incredibly good noisy radio transmitters and need to be shielded to avoid interference to other radio services. Or at least shield your computer room with tin foil so I don't have to hear your computers. I know it is fun to build with plexiglass and applaud DIY but this is not good engineering. Not highly likely but this kind of construction could even hamper public safety communications.

  • I don't know if you've heard of backblaze but it looks like a good solution for backups...

  • It's your saw guide...hello

  • If you need 2GB instead of 1GB storage at the beginning of using wuala, use this code while registration: NNNJNGBFCN4KH5KHJKCA

  • please release your vids on DVD, I would buy them.

  • back to the basics of building stuff. loved it!

  • for those, who use Wuala, feel free to join the Wuala-Hak5-Group: HakStalkers

  • Awesome, really wanna do this here at home.

But i have a fiber connection, anyone know how I'd do that ?

  • @klubbis fiber probably goes to a box and then cat5 comes out right? if so this would be the same thing

  • @jayluketa Yeah i got a litlle confused there, My Tigin modem keeps resetting under load and i am looking for a way simmilar to this to replace my modem but the fiber part seems to be a problem!

  • @klubbis hrm if the modem is resetting and not the router, then I'd contact your ISP and get another modem. Shouldn't be resetting at all.

  • @jayluketa Had several, it's just low grade hardware me thinks.

They use their own distro of some open source project, haven't identified it yet put i suppose i could use the original distro ?

  • @klubbis you got a make, model number and your ISP name I can check into it for ya. If you play with the software on the modem most definitely you'll be looking for a new ISP :-)

  • @jayluketa Tigin HG 1521 from a local ISP called Mimer.

Yeah I'm Norwegian so I'm guessing you wont have heard of mimer!:)

  • awesome episode

u guys should definitely do more hands on stuff

  • All u need is paper and a pencil, do the shading thing the tap the paper to the board your cutting on grid paper would been good for this project. u get a impression of the thing and hit each hole perfectly. but the makeup trick he used was funny~easy.

  • Hak5 is AWESOME!

    just found out about them

  • Dude,, respect! But I have to ask you two things..

    1. Why are we forgetting to mention ESD from jump?

    2. Did I see a power LED and juice on that board when you were handling it and giving your pitch?

  • even i know its gentoo

  • this will be funny to watch in a couple of years, we will be loling at the hot game mentioned: MW2

  • I prefer a neat AlixBoard over a Atom Processor because I just don't the processing power for my router. I have a few VPN sessions open and use it as download and small webserver.

  • I like the concept.

  • you are gooing very slow

  • You said Sexy way too much

  • This episode reminded me of good ol' Systm

  • Hes a geek bob villa.

  • hurfdurf lets use a consumer hard drive and a mini-itx board to make a router im a retard. Oh yeah and smoothwall as the shit icing on the shitcake. Just fucking buy a ~$100 router with dual-band N, gigabit ports including WAN, and NAS connectivity and put Tomato/DD-WRT on it If you wan't decent parts for a homebuilt one you'll spend about as much.

  • @ChaseTatsujin haha!

  • @scourfish You don't really get homebrew, do you?

  • @NicholasGolden

What I get or don't get is irrelevant to my original statement.

  • YOU GUYS DON'T LOVE EACH OTHER! NOOOOOOO!

  • I say scrap the IDE drive in favor of an IDE Flash Module. I used 1GB Flash Modules running DSL linux in a small cluster project I built. Much larger modules are available.

  • @cjus34 Yup,flash modules are the way to go, at least for a small router. For some strange reason I can't find any USB or SATA modules.. ;(

  • Being a silent PC builder, I would of mounted the hard drive with rubber bands somehow. That 250 Wester Digital is loud as hell.

  • This is awesome! I love the episodes that are longer than 30 mins, I like to sit down with a cup of tea and chill with some hak5 every Wednesday

  • yea love to seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee the rest of the epsode keep going this way !!!!

  • Great episode!

  • wow great episode :D:D

  • Im glad Hak5 is going a bit old school again, wish Wess would come back!

  • @markhimself Wess can't come back he has run off to Vegas and married a LED...

  • very interesting idk wtf dootzky is talking about. this wireless technology is the best stuff keep it up! :D

  • this happens to be black for extra sexyness xD

  • kinda boring ;p sorry man

  • wow sick tutorial

  • Darren take a break! We'll understand. You look tired a shit and are very much like me on a good day. (Thats bad)

  • 123456 for password?

  • Any idea how much RAM is needed? I have an Athlon 62 x2 box lying around, but I could only scrounge up 256 MB of RAM...

  • @dylanwinn3 you may have surplus depending on your needs.

  • @dylanwinn3 u can buy like 4gb of ddr2... for like 15 bux

  • you can make a paper template of ther hard drive with right mounting paints

  • @brootdoom Or do like we did with coins as kids - lay paper on the mount of the HD, rub a pencil over the 3 sides and you have a drill template. No need for paint, lipstick, etc.

  • You should do a wireless router with 4 outgoing ports just like a regular router.

  • @ThaPrey you would have a problem having 4 extensions on a min atx case ...the 4 extra are just like a switch anyway so .. you dont really need that . moats users only use 1 out.

  • Cool project!

  • What's the minimum recommended requirements for a router box?

  • @burntbit

Hmmm... for home use... I think old Pentium 3 would be way more powerful enough.

  • @xxgg Depends on the requirements for the software you use.

  • 10:18 I predict more head injuries XD

    (sry couldn't resist =p)

  • darren, you have the best job ever

  • dude... she's hot...

  • ROFLMAO #FAIL I should get one of those Hak5 stickers because they improve my overclocks.

  • seems like a great project, might do this sometime :D

  • LOL i dont think you have to use that kind of safety-equipment for that.

  • Lol great minds thin alike i was thinking the same thing with the makeup to make the HDD fit.

  • Nice to see that you're revisiting smoothwall. And LOL @ the Evil Server reference!

  • "getting those headshots in Modern Warfare 2" LOL

  • i want to see your sailor moon fansite :x

  • Epic #FAIL

  • 11TH.

  • making your own router o.o -book marks-

  • I wonder what he will use for network monitoring?

  • is he a ?

  • second !

  • Comment removed

  • first!

  • @TheBlackStatic Yet still a retard.

  • @dayl3 you are just jelous bwahahahahaaaaa

  • @TheBlackStatic Yeah Im sure hes jealous cuz your comment is first, shall I call you my master, sir?

  • @michnun whatever floats your boat man!

  • @TheBlackStatic good job fuck head
