If the Soviets REALLY wanted afgahnistan they could take it within a month. Form four armies along the border and go to the other border killing anyone who resists, fast moving tanks, air to ground fighters and choppers support the infantry, blitskrieg style, airborne troops drop in to kill any leaders. You must be brutal to make the most hardened man terrified of you, keep a main battle line whilst special forces go deep and cut off any supplies etc.

@skaterdudeninetyfive The least guilty one in the buisness of opium is the farmers, maybe with the exception of the consumer. Why would a farmer care about a consumer in a country far away? They are dirt poor and according to this video they can make up to 10 times the money per acre cultivating opium instead of other crops. Opium is also very easy to grow. I doubt that anyone in their position would choose another crop just for their high moral. Do you think you would?

If the US would end the 'war against drugs' and allow legal and regulated cultivation of poppy and coca...the price of both would become so cheap that it would put all of the cartels in S. America and all of the opium producers in Asia out of business.

With the legal cultivation, production, and sale of coca and poppy products...the US would revive its economy, and it would have far more money to devote to killing terrorists in their own lands!
