@desertrat1111 Nor really. Surf sound was just that--a sound. Yes, Brian Wilson created and developed it, but it was sound, just as the Glenn Miller sound in the 40's was a sound that many bands adapted. But the sound was not developed by Glenn Miller. Other bands utilized the sax/clarinet harmony. Even later, for example, in the 60s, some groups tried to use the Beatles sound. They couldn't get it right But the surf sound was fairly easy to try.
@desertrat1111 Your actually wrong,I knew these guys and this was their first hit,yes it has a west coast sound to it,but this is the only tune they did with that kind of sound. Listen to them do Mind Excursion,a great song. That was more, their sound.
@MrKite053 I sort of thought "Catch Me in the Meadow" was more typical of a "sound" from these broad range of talent guys. voices and harmonies as good as The Beach Boys doesn't make a group surf, even though that is the lyric of this piece ...

The Girl from Greenwich Village (yet another totally different feel)
God this is a great tune. I was a SoCal beach kid, and I felt for any surfer who had to be in New York. Ironically, a few years later I dated a girl from New York -- real culture clash.
@COMING4U "New York's" A lonely Town by The Trade Winds has not been covered as another TOP 40 as per Billboards 6th Edition. Great song! Got it on 45rpm when I was in Navy in San Diego,1968.
I mean, THESE guys (?!?!?!) were dropping "A" (a little more than) a year from then ?????????? Whuhhhhht ???????? ..... But of course, back then in '65, certain people were making huge lifestyle transitions in record time anyway, so it could be explained as thus....................... (ref: "Mind Excursion", circa: 1966-67..... just listen to the lyrics......)
great track, good to see the Tradewinds strutting there stuff. Got a little airplay in the UK from the Pirates, but most unfortunately of the UK wanted to hear the Merseybeat sound. !
great song but did anyone back in the 60's actually sing live when they were on tv? the poor records got more play on live tv than they did on the radio in sum cases
February 06, 1965 -- remember that date? at least duroc1960 does ...

is this Shindig clip the only live performance video of the Tradewinds, doing "New York's a Lonely Town" or any other tune?
bonestube21 2 months ago
@bonestube21 When it comes to syndicated shows, I believe so.

It's not totally pre.recorded. Their hand lapping is mikes. You don't hear clapping (or screaming girls) on the record.

I like the song. I can't help but to wonder, just how many times has this song been covered by other artists?

Geez, I always assumed the Beach Boys sang this. I stand corrected 40 years later!

Ultimate surf harmony, better than the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, et al...why in the hell this song went nowhere on the charts I'll never know.
l1nkh0gthr0b 1 year ago
@l1nkh0gthr0b Its not better than the beach boys its an imitation with repeating major seventh chords like burt bacharach
spacepatrolman 6 months ago
@spacepatrolman So I suppose I should have written "I like it better than anything the Beach Boys did." That is irrefutable.
l1nkh0gthr0b 6 months ago
@l1nkh0gthr0b I like it too i have the 45 the album the sheet music the dave edmunds record too

@l1nkh0gthr0b At that time in 1965 the British Invasion was kicking ass and taking names that's my guess.
