This is not a serious battle. Our younger stallion got out and managed to breed two of dad's wives. Dad went through two fences and beat the "daylights" out of his bad boy. Son had large chunks missing from his hide all over his back. They healed with no scars but son now knows dad really can "whoop his butt" whenever he chooses to. They did live together for three years until this happened. Dad is still peeved at son.

They lived together last year. This year Viking is about to turn seven and to ensure the safety of our gelding we have separated them by two fences from him.
I only blanket for snow. If it's just cold with no moisture they do just fine with protection from the wind alone. For a winter storm the old ones and donkeys stay in their barns and the younger ones get blankets and use our windbreak fences.
