Back then this game felt huge, like there was a big sprawlilng world that I wasn't old/good enough to get to, and each new discovery was a thrill. Reaching the yellow guards was like finding El Dorado.
Easy to say "they don't make them like that anymore" but mostly it's for good reason. There're many elements of some of these games I'd like to see in a comtemporary game, though. Things are too overdone and in-your-face now, rife with gimmicks. I miss the old exploration styles.
@mikeabc2 I similarly "finished" the game many times then spent ages trying to figure what to do with the wand to actually finish. There was a kind of logic to it in the end with "X marks the spot", and they had to make it somewhat tricky as I recall there being a prize on offer for the person to complete it. This was the very first game I played on our brand new BBC B with dual floppy drive. Kept me amused for days :)
I did kill the witch with the bucket of water. The problem was that I didn't know what I had to do after that. From memory you had to throw the wand at a wall and it said "You have won" I played a number of times trying to throw the wand at the wall and never worked it out. Silly ending as everything else in the game was logical...
I never did work out how to get past the witch. Tried throwing water at her but she kept jumping out the way, and I usually ended up stuck down the well or drowning cos I wasn't holding the aqualung
throw stool up at torch. set fire to bed, and get out that way. you get a sword as well. you can get past spiders with little red men as bait, but beyond that i failed to get further.
yep!, you stand under the door, drop the stool jump onto the stool, jump again and you will be on the platform above the door, then throw the torch from there, the guard runs under you and you get out!
It's all about timing, if you stand as far as you can on the left of the flapyou can see the edge of the guard as he comes and goes, when he goes throw the torch and run for it. I think that was it, i'm searching my memory, let me know how you get on, i'll try and sus it out too :)
This was nothing to do with the NES. A classic game, until you complete it and realise how small it really is! It made you feel there was so much more too it! Shame really I spent hours playing this as a kid. Great memories.
Hi, I know you wrote that comment a year ago but if you are still interested there are free download versions available. Message me back if you are still interested and I'll show you how to do it.
One of my top 5 all-time favourites on the good old Beeb - I played it for hours (and I mean HOURS). Would never run on the B+, until nifty little B/B+ convertor switch was added. So nearly finished it many times, but always got killed by the witch (finally beat her in recent years; boy was the ending a let down). Also, Doctor Who and the Mines of Terror was devised as Castle Quest II. Classic game.
You really suck at playing this

We always played it slightly differently -
Ran up the stairs and pulled off some mad jump/throw combo with the sword to get it as close to the prison has possible!
Then was the classic stool + torch + bed = best episode of prison break yet! Run out, grab sword and stool, then use stool to get up ladder!
The aqualung however was an utter bitch to get! :D

I think they must have ran out of time and money in this game, because the ending was so poor.

I know! I finished this about 20years since I first played it, and all I got was disappointment and shattered dreams!
