  • You really suck at playing this

  • bbc micro with it's 16 colors onscreen out of a palette of ... 8

i was SO jealous of the c64's ability to show 'grey'

  • Back then this game felt huge, like there was a big sprawlilng world that I wasn't old/good enough to get to, and each new discovery was a thrill. Reaching the yellow guards was like finding El Dorado.

Easy to say "they don't make them like that anymore" but mostly it's for good reason. There're many elements of some of these games I'd like to see in a comtemporary game, though. Things are too overdone and in-your-face now, rife with gimmicks. I miss the old exploration styles.

  • That cover of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" is a shrieking horror

  • We played this at school and were stuck in the prison for a long while.

  • Wow the sounds remind me of Centepede.

  • this was back in the days when smooth sideways scrolling was seen as a cool thing.

  • what game was this instrumental originally on?

  • Loved it! :) My first game on the Beeb I finished.

  • Wow, what is this?

Is this possibly a thinking man's action game?

  • @mikeabc2 I similarly "finished" the game many times then spent ages trying to figure what to do with the wand to actually finish. There was a kind of logic to it in the end with "X marks the spot", and they had to make it somewhat tricky as I recall there being a prize on offer for the person to complete it. This was the very first game I played on our brand new BBC B with dual floppy drive. Kept me amused for days :)

  • We always played it slightly differently -

Ran up the stairs and pulled off some mad jump/throw combo with the sword to get it as close to the prison has possible!

Then was the classic stool + torch + bed = best episode of prison break yet! Run out, grab sword and stool, then use stool to get up ladder!

The aqualung however was an utter bitch to get! :D

  • I did kill the witch with the bucket of water. The problem was that I didn't know what I had to do after that. From memory you had to throw the wand at a wall and it said "You have won" I played a number of times trying to throw the wand at the wall and never worked it out. Silly ending as everything else in the game was logical...

  • One of my favourite games of all time. This and Citadel.

  • Wow! This was a cool game :)

I never did work out how to get past the witch. Tried throwing water at her but she kept jumping out the way, and I usually ended up stuck down the well or drowning cos I wasn't holding the aqualung

  • Argh. Now I've got the theme music, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, running round my head.

  • did anybody out there clock this game?

  • What a blast from the past this is!

  • man this is one long intro. I keep pressing space to begin!!

  • throw stool up at torch. set fire to bed, and get out that way. you get a sword as well. you can get past spiders with little red men as bait, but beyond that i failed to get further.

  • I think they must have ran out of time and money in this game, because the ending was so poor.

  • I know! I finished this about 20years since I first played it, and all I got was disappointment and shattered dreams!

  • OMG This brings back memories!!!

  • Argh - this game was so annoying! You've brought it all back to me.

  • dus any one now ho to get out of the card room after you set the bed on fire

  • yep!, you stand under the door, drop the stool jump onto the stool, jump again and you will be on the platform above the door, then throw the torch from there, the guard runs under you and you get out!

  • thanks its the next bit thats tricky i managed to get up that ladder but dam its death by guard or death by water.

theirs no hope in completing this game.

  • It's all about timing, if you stand as far as you can on the left of the flapyou can see the edge of the guard as he comes and goes, when he goes throw the torch and run for it. I think that was it, i'm searching my memory, let me know how you get on, i'll try and sus it out too :)

  • Don't recall the frame rate being that bad? I never did get past those horrible green toothbrushes armed with matches :)

  • pressing the breack key was NO NO as it would crash !

    Classic !!

  • Throw the stool at the torch!

  • This was nothing to do with the NES. A classic game, until you complete it and realise how small it really is! It made you feel there was so much more too it! Shame really I spent hours playing this as a kid. Great memories.

  • always wanted this on my beeb, but never got it. didn't this come with a rom? or was that the similar doctor who game?

  • hello, where can i get this game from for windows xp. i know they make emulators etc. i bet u can still get it and play it.

    ali

  • Hi, I know you wrote that comment a year ago but if you are still interested there are free download versions available. Message me back if you are still interested and I'll show you how to do it.

  • What I expected-A crappy game that I hated on the NES.

What I saw-A superior game to the one I hated on the NES.

  • Doesnt everyone love feeding monkeys to spiders ;-)

  • Throw the chair up at the torch the get up on ledge throw torch on bed guard runs in you drop down and escape.

  • A classic.

Just loved busting out of jail by setting the bed on fire.

  • run green guy run! :)

  • did anyone ever complete this and kill the witch? I'd love to see what happens!!

  • I managed to kill the witch with the bucket of water, but the game didn't end...

  • One of my top 5 all-time favourites on the good old Beeb - I played it for hours (and I mean HOURS). Would never run on the B+, until nifty little B/B+ convertor switch was added. So nearly finished it many times, but always got killed by the witch (finally beat her in recent years; boy was the ending a let down). Also, Doctor Who and the Mines of Terror was devised as Castle Quest II. Classic game.
