I can't believe someone didn't throw something at her. Everyone else is talking about ideas, even Deepak, and she chimes in with retorts based solely to name drop the important people she's talked to. This is perhaps where modern science and philosophy split. Where a scientific argument is based on the merit of the logic of the argument, the philosopher bases the strength of their argument on the authority of the person's name where the idea came from.

He has charisma, eloquence, and stature, but he uses it to make up his own shit and sell it rather than join the ranks of men and women that are truly on the frontier of understanding whats going on. it's a shame...i see this image of his same self in the form of a harsh skeptic. he could have been quite a force for science

Too bad a lot of people are still deluded by religion and thats why Harris and Shermer speak out
@sonykroket He doesn't have to define god, but he does believe in and wants to encourage spiritual experiences; read The End of Faith he talks a good deal about spiritual experience. What he could have talked about was how to maximize these in society without appealing to an archaic deity. Instead he took the easy route and criticized religion, which, to me, is like shooting fish in a barrel. He's already helped break it down, now he needs to focus his energies on building something back up.
@sonykroket You rude little shit. Where did I say anything about the 'supernatural'? And if you knew anything about anything you'd know that ALL experience is a RELATIONSHIP between the internal and the external.
BTW i think its a copout if you defend faith by talking about the past concept of a god and therefore dismiss all the horror it caused. Its like cherry picking and to most religious people whats considered the past of god as Deepak and Jean are mentioning is still considered the present god-concept.
People think the bible/quran is the word of the creator of the cosmos, by saying you cant talk about god in this context is not possible as its current state is defined by that past
@sonykroket I am not defending faith and I actually agree 100% with everything Shermer and Harris were saying. What I am saying is, I'm already beyond that. Hearing Harris speak was just re-listening to what I've heard him say in many lectures all over youtube and in person. What I would rather have heard is what they think a future would look like without god, or what god concept (if society needs one) they think is best. I wanted to hear ideas on the future.
The argument was not "Does religion have a future?", it was "Does God have a future?". Every religion I have ever studied was either completely wrong or completely incomplete. Sam is a great debater, but is a complete idiot at the subject at hand(so is Jean). These religions that Sam is referencing are the grand scheme of things exactly as he says, but the has NO correlation to whether or not God is real, or will continue to be explored by humanity. This is so frustrating to watch...
"Theology: The field of study and analysis of make believe; for the purpose of spinning reality to conform to the human imagination so the control of others can be achieved." -Scott Tebben
If ABC is going to have a worthless yapfest about bullshit non-existent supernatural things like "god" (so, yes - I am 90% on the side of Sam Harris and Michael Shermer on those issues, 0% on the side of the theists and Deepshit ChokeOff) why not discuss REAL supernatural things, such as the hundreds of independently reported UFO and alien sightings?
I don't give a FUCK how politically incorrect it is to bring these subjects up.
If you claim to be for free speech, you will give equal time.
I hate hearing Jean talk about Martin Buber. She is stupid and her points have nothing to do with the discussion. Martin Buber was an intelligent religious scholar who wrote on many subjects and had some interesting theories. But he should be treated more with historical interest and less like an authority on empirical reality. This woman sucks.
i found this woman unfit to this discussion, she is clueless, i think they brought here into this discussion to send political statement i.e. woman canb discuss this kind of subjects etc, hahaaaa o my god it is funny how she is craving for attention
Deepak is right. Harris is fixated on the past. He made a career out of it. The rest of the world has already moved past his literal reading of religious text (except for some radicals that are being properly delt with). His entire mode of reasoning is built on near irrelevant hand slapping. I gotta be honest, Deepak may be arrogant, but at least he isn't a soft spoken douche like Harris.
When 45% of America believe in Creationism, the world hasn't moved from literal reading of religious text.
When the belief that the world is 6000 years old is still prevalent and believed, we still have a problem.
While completely 'literal' interpretations of the bible are less common, so long as the Bible explicitly says homosexuality is a sin, this will always be a relevant issue. And, to deny that interpretation of the Bible is to deny God and say you know better.
Sam is trying desperately to convey that Deepak is delving in to areas he has only cursory knowledge in. It galls me to think of the millions Chopra has made with his followers through bits and pieces of scientific and metaphysical gems he assembles to make his points. I'm very disappointed in his sophomoric and defensive responses and arguments. On to a good Hitch debate.
Sam is a complete moron who made his fame and fortune off of convincing people that a literal reading of the bible would lead to the entire globe back sliding into the middle ages. Nonsense. Hitchens is no better, he's just a much more articulate in the way he presents his earings, turds wrapped in tin foil on a couple of fish hooks.
@mrstarstuff hey you farkin loser, Sai baba in india is richer than deepak and made way more money than deepak and on his bday millions of ppl turn up to pay tribute. r yu farkin tryin to tell us that becuz sai baba is able to fool those deluded idiots he is some kind of genius and cant be wrong????? deepak falls in same category. remember jim jones??? he had followers.. deepak is a big fraud, he has superficial knowledge of science and he tries to use that to con money from idiots.
@chinamanspeakenlis I'm missing something. You are angrily agreeing with me or do I see the thread wrong? In my view Deepak = wrong and wishful thinking Harris = mostly correct and logical thinking. I hope this clears my position.
Deepak- "I'm sorry i'm combatant and rude. Michael made me mad."
You stupid, childish piece of shit. Shermer wasn't even talking for the last ten minutes. Crazy lady and your big mouth kept filling up the time while Shermer sat there and politely gave you your turn, despite its lack of usefulness.
Interesting that Chopra is supposed to be the 'enlightened' one. Just compare his use of voice, body language and facial expression with those of Harris.
A person with a icon picture of Jesus isn't qualified to discuss evidence and my comment is exceedingly simple. I have pressure to dumb it down to the lowest common denominator.
I have spent some time trying to understand and articulate the fallacy of Deepak and his female partner's thinking. Nevertheless, I think my first impression was the best: They are idiots. It is difficult to understand and point out the fallacies of their nonsensical statements. Want some proof? Here you are: "lsdjflsjf sldfsljfslf lsdlfjsd wsidfne aodoiuemn." Now I dare anyone to challenge that statement. It's a shame that Sam Harris and Michael Shermer had to waste their time.

there was never a future to GOD. humans have used the GOD word to gain for them selves in the present. GOD is just a word to gain control over the masses. move on humans.
Depak is such a attention whore, always repeating his love and peace for all bullzhit just for applause, he has no arguments just unverifiable claims just like all the other religions.
@trig1211 The audience is smart. They are clapping to each person because each person is expressing the truth in a certain way, from their own perspective. Try to see it.
@SikhiArt he's just talking shit, using the words love, creativity, etc that people warm to and talks loudly using his hands. basically trying to act and appeal to people in a different way. rather than trying to prove that his position is correct
@trig1211 You gotta look beyond his/her way of talking to understand what they are saying. Keep thinking about what they said and you will see the truth in their statements. This applies to any of the debaters on the stage.
It's funny that the rationalists don't understand what the post-rationalists are saying, so they have to resort to insults inorder to protect their intellectual identities.
Also, on the record... I'm an Atheist... Also, Deepak gets loud when he knows he does not have an explanation... An that characteristic is present in many of us of indian subcontinent... LOL... I use to argue people when I did believe in God, and I though by being louder than them made my argument more legitimate... but, in actuality I used to look like a coward... And, that's what Deepak is a COWARD scared to delve into anything research based since it is simply over his head.
The best explanation for our interconnected relationship with the cosmos is the following: we have found DNA in meteorites.. And testing revealed adenine and guanine were present which are the two FUNDAMENTAL components of DNA called nucleobases. Specifically, CM2 meteorites. So, Yes we are connected with our cosmos scientifically, but to say some intelligent-being has done this? Well, you need empirical evidence to push for that Mr. Chopra, and you did not provide that. This life is it.
Jean is a nut job. If i wanted to hear pointless never ending dribble about how tall a guy is compared to his beard, i've got an old folks home just down the street from my house filled with old bats like her who would just love to waste my day talking about the 30s.
Maybe Deepak needs God so he can sell Him... Why be so defensive if you are sure of something... and if your not sure of something then why get defensive. Just relax and be peaceful, intelligent, compassionate and listen to others and chose to agree or disagree but keep your seat and show by example
Houston has clearly read a lot of books and loves referencing them... I'm just not totally sure she has understood them.
Sam keeps going back to 'old world religion' because the other side is giving him nothing else. Talking about love and understanding gets a great applause but that's not actually the point of the debate. Harris and Shermer are not arguing for less love and understanding so... what's the other side's point?
I love Haris ,he is the best among all the athiest heroes when targeting the philosophical issues that the realigious people always try to hang on to
but, about the Quran,he got the info wrong, the verse about women, allows men to "hit" their wives, not "whip" them, whipping is actually what the islamic scolars suggested as further or wide explaination of how to "hit" the women, one of them even suggested that a man can tied his women to a tree and whip here, but this is not in the quran
@tamouz77 I agree with your view of Sam. He is very smart, especially when battling the dogmas of religion. However, here he keeps going back to old world religions when it is conceded that his opponent does not advocate nor wish to talk about. I realize it is a comfort zone for Sam, but he is sidetracking the issue.
@DTK5689 u r right about that, but I think there is a good reason why he was focused on that, the other side does not provide any real religion, its just thoughts and general ideas that are cleverly mixed with som scientific words, but in the end,it doesnt mean anything real
thats why he tried to focus on the real issue, which is the real religion, specially the 3 Ibrahimic religions, because there u can find a specific god with specific agenda that affect our present, and will still affect our future
@tamouz77 Yes, but the topic of conversation deals with the future of god, not the mythology of the past. Sam knows exactly who his opponents are and what they believe and yet goes to his comfort zone again and again for sensationalism. In his debates on religion, he is magnificent, but here he seems much weaker.
@DTK5689 I understand what u r trying to say,but again, these are not mythology of the *past*,this is the main problem here, these mythologies represent the main stream in western world right now,and the clashes between them will continue for an unknown time,
so the future of god, will not be far away from these religions anyway
I think thats what Haris was trying to say here
so he was not out of topic,he simply didnt want to discuss a god that only 2 persons believe in
@tamouz77 I view it more that because he is unable to attack Deepak directly, he falls back to his comfort. If there was a religion that his opponents held, it would be easy to have his conversation of the ills of religion. However, the issue on the stage is spirituality, not religion. If there was a rabbi, priest or shiek present, I would have no problem with Sam's direction.
@DTK5689 but what is to discuss about what deepak saying
there is nothing concret there, its just spiritual talk with no basic lines or clear definitions
I find it hard to discuss something that its not there from the first place
may be you r right, and he should have tried to discuss more
but I cant find anything worth of discussiong with deepak
because they all agreed from the begining that this kind of thoughts,is not harmfull like the "regular" religion,so the debate will be over in 5minutes
I think Jean is having her own conversation, and has no real clue what's going on. Why can't they just admit that they have no real proof and only have faith in their "metaphysics", instead of claiming to have all the answers to something they can't possibly know. Jean and Deepak shouldn't even be in this debate, I think most people, even people who believe in "God" dismiss both of them.
Can Jean just stop telling stories, as if she's reading a storybook to the audience?! It's so obnoxious to hear about beards and water buffaloes + to listen to her incessant name-dropping. And why is she wearing a velour tent?
Sam Harris and Michael Shermer for the win! They are just brilliant at exposing the nonsense of religion.

BTW i think its a copout if you defend faith by talking about the past concept of a god and therefore dismiss all the horror it caused. Its like cherry picking and to most religious people whats considered the past of god as Deepak and Jean are mentioning is still considered the present god-concept.
People think the bible/quran is the word of the creator of the cosmos, by saying you cant talk about god in this context is not possible as its current state is defined by that past
sonykroket 4 months ago
@sonykroket I am not defending faith and I actually agree 100% with everything Shermer and Harris were saying. What I am saying is, I'm already beyond that. Hearing Harris speak was just re-listening to what I've heard him say in many lectures all over youtube and in person. What I would rather have heard is what they think a future would look like without god, or what god concept (if society needs one) they think is best. I wanted to hear ideas on the future.
CairnsMC3 4 months ago
The argument was not "Does religion have a future?", it was "Does God have a future?". Every religion I have ever studied was either completely wrong or completely incomplete. Sam is a great debater, but is a complete idiot at the subject at hand(so is Jean). These religions that Sam is referencing are the grand scheme of things exactly as he says, but the has NO correlation to whether or not God is real, or will continue to be explored by humanity. This is so frustrating to watch...

Deepak is right. Harris is fixated on the past. He made a career out of it. The rest of the world has already moved past his literal reading of religious text (except for some radicals that are being properly delt with). His entire mode of reasoning is built on near irrelevant hand slapping. I gotta be honest, Deepak may be arrogant, but at least he isn't a soft spoken douche like Harris.
circusOFprecision 5 months ago
@circusOFprecision

Nonsense.

LudvigIndestrucable 7 months ago
I love Haris ,he is the best among all the athiest heroes when targeting the philosophical issues that the realigious people always try to hang on to
but, about the Quran,he got the info wrong, the verse about women, allows men to "hit" their wives, not "whip" them, whipping is actually what the islamic scolars suggested as further or wide explaination of how to "hit" the women, one of them even suggested that a man can tied his women to a tree and whip here, but this is not in the quran
tamouz77 7 months ago
@tamouz77 I agree with your view of Sam. He is very smart, especially when battling the dogmas of religion. However, here he keeps going back to old world religions when it is conceded that his opponent does not advocate nor wish to talk about. I realize it is a comfort zone for Sam, but he is sidetracking the issue.
DTK5689 7 months ago
@DTK5689 u r right about that, but I think there is a good reason why he was focused on that, the other side does not provide any real religion, its just thoughts and general ideas that are cleverly mixed with som scientific words, but in the end,it doesnt mean anything real
thats why he tried to focus on the real issue, which is the real religion, specially the 3 Ibrahimic religions, because there u can find a specific god with specific agenda that affect our present, and will still affect our future
tamouz77 7 months ago
@tamouz77 Yes, but the topic of conversation deals with the future of god, not the mythology of the past. Sam knows exactly who his opponents are and what they believe and yet goes to his comfort zone again and again for sensationalism. In his debates on religion, he is magnificent, but here he seems much weaker.
DTK5689 7 months ago
@DTK5689 I understand what u r trying to say,but again, these are not mythology of the *past*,this is the main problem here, these mythologies represent the main stream in western world right now,and the clashes between them will continue for an unknown time,
so the future of god, will not be far away from these religions anyway
I think thats what Haris was trying to say here
so he was not out of topic,he simply didnt want to discuss a god that only 2 persons believe in
and I totally agree
tamouz77 7 months ago
@tamouz77 I view it more that because he is unable to attack Deepak directly, he falls back to his comfort. If there was a religion that his opponents held, it would be easy to have his conversation of the ills of religion. However, the issue on the stage is spirituality, not religion. If there was a rabbi, priest or shiek present, I would have no problem with Sam's direction.
DTK5689 7 months ago
