Why aren't you wearing a gi? Cool video though, it makes me want to train Kyokushin. I hope I do it one day, I'm too busy with Brazilian Jujitsu at the moment (nothing wrong with that though).
thanks for the post mate. i enjoy watching these types of documentary, im just wondering where you got hold of these, is there a dvd i can purchase anywhere?
The reason they no longer allow bare-knuckle hits to the face (it was allowed in the formative years of karate, including shots to the groin), is because they were losing too many students to broken teeth, noses, and other facial injuries. You can't make a karate school without students that will keep returning. They are almost all amateur fighters with separate careers that generally require a presentable face to the public.
@guchikura absolutely wrong! Mas Oyama didn't want punches to the face. Kyokushin NEVER had punches to the face. This is well documented. It would take you a few seconds to do the research and write a correct answer.
@brooklynmonk1 - note that I said "formative years". This means before "kyokushinkai" became a branded style of karate when Mas Oyama was training people in a non-formal dojo setting. Where is this "well documented" information? Please provide a few links for follow up. My information only comes from word of mouth while I spent 7 years practicing Kyokushin in Japan. It's generally bad etiquette to suggest an idea is "absolutely" wrong, especially in the world of opinion.
@guchikura 'well documented information" there are countless biographies on Mas Oyama, as well as histories of Kyokushin. how do you not know this? You could go on google and search the history of either the man or his art. you could also go on amazon and find countless books. I said you were wrong that they "no-longer allow bare knuckle hits to the face". This is not an opinion, but a fact. and the fact is that they never allowed bareknuckle hits to the face.
@brooklynmonk1 - One thing I forgot to mention was I had also heard they started doing bare-knuckle sparring, but because of injuries, they started wrapping their hands with towels, but even that was not enough protection, so Sosai decided to scrap the whole idea of face punches to keep things simple.
@guchikura I agree with you that all of the reasons you stated would be good reasons not to fight bare fisted. I personally have only had one bare fisted boxing match and wouldnt want to do it again. But the point was, and it is a fact, and if you were in Kyokushin in japan you must have been exposed to books about the founder, he never allowed punches to the face.
@brooklynmonk1 I'm not being clear about this. I have to emphasize "formative years" as the time they were basically experimenting with sparring as real as possible. This was Mas Oyama's intent I believe, to create a style of karate with padding free, as realistic as possible sparring. Of course, this would have never taken off as a viable method in a sustainable training regimen, so head punches and other techniques were eliminated from tournament style fighting before "Kyokushin" was branded.
They don't allow punches to the face because you'd break your hand (old fashioned bare knuckle boxing had similar rules), and has nothing to do with lengthening the fights or protecting the head.
@budderking Fights would finish too quickly if the face punches would be allowed, and its too easy to knock somebody down with a face punch rather than body punch. OSU
This isn't Kyokushin. It's Kyokushin-kan. This is not Mas Oyama's Kyokushin it is Royama's Kyokushin-kan. BIG difference. One respects Sosai and his dojo, the other disrespects Sosai and fights with his dojo. How can that be? Royama lies to his students to make them feel like they are part of Sosai but he has cut them off.
Omg they went easy on you ha Ha! ..you took the kids class pttt, that was like my warm up in my class.awesome vid idk why those blue belt were going slow. aww come you were affraid of little conditioning..
