  • What use are the rich any ways? Why do we even have them around? They add no value, we waste resources keeping them so well off, all they do is off shore our jobs and import millions of illegals scabs t grind our wages down.

  • If you are making 20 times the national average in salary, but pay less than 20 times the national average in taxes, you aren't paying your quote unquote fair share, because people who make more money use more infrastructure in order to do it. Few rich people are able to get away with this but let's not forget them. But to all of the rest of the rich: this man makes a good point. And what is not said are the overall returns the rich will receive from being taxed more. Because unless they...

  • @TheRepublicOfUngeria ...pay more pennies per dollar than a poor person, they will not receive cheaper skilled labor, they won't be able to sell many expensive middle class items like cars and homes, technology will lag behind (imagine if the Xbox 360 came out in the 90s) and many other things

  • The percentages have changed--they are even more extreme--and (while I didn't like the show), Sam has a very valid point: he paid his fair share, along with the fair share of 26 other Americans.

  • What season and episode is this from?

  • That 22% for the top 1% is nominal, not effective tax rate. Oh and @mrbrendanobrien how many jobs do you think Paris Hilton or Steve Jobs create with their own income?

Personally I think we should get rid of corporate income tax and raise capital gains because frankly it reduces business reinvestment and creates a massive disparity between those who make most of their money on the markets and the rest.

  • That "bottom 50%" includes children and young adult students with no or negligible incomes. That 39% isn't 39% anymore.

The Republicans who controlled Congress under Clinton--when they weren't busy trying to take the man out over a blowjob--at least still had the sense not to cut taxes on the people least pained to pay them while starting two wars.

  • Rich people don't create jobs, they funnel money to tax shelters, buy imported goods, and hire undocumented labour.

The rich can pay their damned taxed like everyone else.

  • @KayEnDub they do, much more than you do. And furthermore what makes you think they won't be even more likely to find tax shelters under a higher marginal tax rate?

  • @KayEnDub

Have you ever gotten a job from a poor person? You also buy imported goods since nothing is made in this country anymore.....and I have a feeling you probably don't pay jack shit in Fed. Income tax either. Maybe you should pay your taxes.....

  • @KayEnDub The wealthy do pay taxes. they pay capital gains taxes that accounted for 830 + billion in 2007, 938 + billion in 2008 and 2009 they dropped 1.254 trillon in the feds bucket. 2010 is far less because when you piss of the rich, they say bite our asses you ungreatful turd and we will hold our money and you can get a job from the wonderful government. They (we) pay much more than anyone else. If we are gready, then you all are jelous. They are the same.

  • @3rdRangerBat1000 Apparently, the rich do not know how to spell. What ever happened to finishing school? I say, they'll let _anyone_ be rich these days.

  • @andrewjthomas Another liberal dodging the real topic of the rick paying taxes. Who gives a fuck if I misspell a word or two. I am typing rather quickly. I did finish school, two degrees. MBA, and Engineering degree. I make $213,000 a year and I pay my taxes, plus the taxes of 14 other Americans. Is that fair enough. People who get a return each year for more than they paid in, DO NOT PAY TAXES.

  • @andrewjthomas Some math for ya there slick. You pay $3000 in and get $3500 back. 51% of Americans do not pay taxes you smuck. Take an economics class and maybe you will understand the importance of the wealthy in the system. Give me, Give me, Give me. You people are a sad bunch. Having to rely on other for your survival. That must take a real toll on your soul. I pay more taxes in Capital Gains Tax than you get back each year. You Welfare mooch.

  • @KayEnDub That's an incredibly sophomoric generalization. The "rich" (a political, not economic term) are generally able to use a number of loopholes in the tax system to avoid paying as much in INCOME tax, but then they run into an entire Crayola box of taxes the "poor" (another political term) aren't even able to bitch about having to pay, if they are aware of them at all: Estate taxes, property taxes, capital gains taxes (long and short term), payroll taxes, and all those lovely eco-taxes.

  • Actually, the top 1% pay 39% of all federal taxes. The bottom 50% pay no federal taxes whatsoever.

BTW, it's the rich people who create jobs, and write paychecks. Make it more difficult for them to do this, and they either stop, or go elsewhere.

Democrats (other than in this fantasy TV show) don't understand basic economics. It's why we have so much failure when they are in control.

Oh, and before anyone brings up Clinton, REPUBLICANS controlled Congress, gave us good economy.

  • Sam is wrong, the rich have incredible influence over our government and have long since bought and paid for our political system. The rich pay too little in taxes for the amount of power they wield.

  • @YNot1989

Oh, I get it. The taxes we pay are to buy power. I thought it was to pay for services the gov't provides.

  • @younghoss

There is no political freedom without economic freedom. In short: Money is power.
