i love this song, still i dont see the relation between berlin and arabia but bowie must watch something in his head to do it and it really worked.thats what i call to have an style.bowie style LOL is awesome
@andrew19vato but here's the thing.... he's not gay, he IS married to Iman... all things about him being gay back in the 70's was just because of the Ziggy Stardust persona and his cocaine addiction.
@SuperDiamondDogs he was bisexual in the 70's though, i dont know if he was pretending to be just for the sake of being controversial or if he actually was, but i guess he must've just been trying it out because he is as you say married to Iman...not that it matters particularly, i even used to worry that i might be gay lol
I was about 14, when I discovered the album "heroes" and was very flattered by that: I've never heard music like that before. "The secret life of arabia" is a great song. It's living, it's full of pictures. If you know what I mean.. Thanks for posting this lovely video!
Here's the situation: David Bowie never told the real story behind the "Heroes" album for a couple of reasons. One was that if everyone knew that the entire album was written to a hetero sexual man, some people wouldn't listen to it. The other was a legal reason. If he told the real story, the real people who are in the story would have some legal rights to the story and could sue him for it.
I know David Bowie. I was there the night he wrote the "Heroes" album. The album is written about three people and the girl on the front of the Rolling Stones "Made in the Shade" album. The three people were: David Bowie, Quay Lewd of the Tubes and I. This track refers to the girl on the album cover.
@TheNouveauxdecadence LOL there is such thing as creative silly songs. Believe it or not but David Bowie does have a sense of humor. I love this song!!!!
this is far one of the coolest videos of bowie i ever seen in you tube.the art, the photos, the great song of heroes, berlin images even i think.by far the best
Oh, it's an OK track. But doesn't it sound more like it's from the Station To Station period? Even the Carlos Alomar guitar parts sound like it's from that album.
Does anyone know if this was written in say 1975 or 1976 but only used on Heroes? And if so, why? It doesn't really fit in.
It also sounds like an unfinished song, a fragment, so in that sense it's like something from Low.
From the Hunky Dory period into the Station to Station period right through to Scary Monsters David Bowie was coolness personified. He was able to project an alienation component to his music, his look and the way he conducted himself that was fascinating [and still is] without ever over doing it or trying to hard.
Great clip,great style,great artist...Nice upload...
this song is the orgasm of the vanguard music. so awesome, so powerfull, so delightfull. with heroes and other tracks of this album make one of the best in this trilogy
My little cousin and i used to listen to this song and pretend we were Arabian or Egyptian princesses and we'd belly dance...ahhh, those were the days. :)
You're very welcome! You have a great style. I'm so glad you included that Glamour painting from the Scary Monsters Pierrot picture series. That poster is so cool. Have you ever seen footage of him from his appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1979 with Klaus Nomi? I was a freshman in college when that show aired and I was just completely mesmerized by his performances.
I have INDEED seen the performance he did with Klaus Nomi on Saturday Night Live with "The Man Who Sold The World".
I 101% agree that it's mesmerizing! It keeps getting taken off You Tube but apparently it may be appearing on future Saturday Night Live DVD releases! ... It's criminal it isn't available anywhere!
I do have a copy but I am not allowed to post it :-(
One of my favorite tracks as well. Heard it played in a club way back in the day. The DJ looped the end with Bowie singing "Arabia" and played it for about ten minutes. The crowd went insane. It was awesome!

David Bowie wrote the entire "Heroes" album to one guy. The album is a series of songs about meeting one guy. I know that because I was that guy.

@outnaway Agreed. The album should have finished with Neuköln's distressed lament. Still a mindblowing album, though

Heroes is my favorite Bowie album. Fantastic sound, even 35 years later.

Much underrated this one, one of his best tracks, particularly where 'the herione dies'
beautiful, and what a funky sound
