@eenger The kind of genetical modification you're referring to is not modification, but selection. What we do is modifying the DNA using DNA from another organism. Nature just selects the best animals bij natural selection so their DNA can stay, but what we do is ADDING to the DNA from DNA out of another organism, so that's the difference, we're mixing up species.

I can remember looking at salmon in the grocery store, and seeing how too pink it was, understanding there were dyes put in it, just to get it to look healthy, and it smelled terrible, and people would buy it while there was info out there about eating salmon that was not wild, instead farm raised, devoid of Omega fatty acids, which is the whole point of eating salmon, to get a good source of Omega Oils. I praise this guy for having the common sense to understand and appreciate the fact that nature is too complicated for man to comprehend. I'm really in support of genetically modified foods - but I agree, we need to research the health benefits. With all we are able to do with biotechnology (grow hearts in petri dishes, stem cell research from skin cells), we'll be able to fix it. Organisms take advantage of this all the time through natural selection. Nature just selects the best animals bij natural selection so their DNA can stay, but what we do is ADDING to the DNA from DNA out of another organism, so that's the difference, we're mixing up species.

And if that is the bottom line, then it is not meant to be produced or sold, period. I'm not worried about consuming GM products, what I am concerned about is the effect GM products have on wildlife in and around the countryside. We as the human race is growing and need to improve crop yields, and there are not many viable ways of doing so without considering GM.
It's a shame there isn't an answer that suits everybody, what ever we do something will upset someone.

I don't agree with GM for the hell of messing with plant/animal genes, but when the final product can save whole communities from starvation it can only be a good thing. In some parts of the world, children eat mud cakes to stave off hunger pain, I'm sure their body's would be glad with a GM loaf of bread.

Experiments have been done feeding GMO foods to children in indian, some died or had organ failure to name a few! Many animals won't touch GMO! GMO plants that produce there own pesticide still make the pestcide in the human gut even after being eaten ! Is that a serious question about how your body can tell the difference?

I praise this guy for having the common sense to understand and appreciate the fact that nature is too complicated for man to comprehend. GMOs are an unfortunate example of how scientists don't understand nearly as much as they make out, they only learn about synergetic and emergent relationships long after the sad facts (i.e. they weren't smart enough to anticipate these unpredictable consequences) and that is basically what science is: a rough and crude man made interpretation of nature.

Well that's one interpretation of science... But let's face it, you are typing your comment on a computer. That didn't come out of thin air. Science is rough sometimes, but it constantly refines itself and continues to smooth out all the rough edges. I think the real problem is a greedy, profit-driven system of thought that jumps on opportunity for profits too readily without exploring the consequences nearly as much as they are responsible to do so. These PEOPLE need to be held accountable.

I think genetics is a field that should be studied in the non-profit sector. We can use it to mass produce healthy, eco-system friendly foods just as much as unhealthy and environmentally dangerous foods. It's a double edged sword, but its being researched for all the wrong reasons right now.

I'm really in support of genetically modified foods - but I agree, we need to research the health benefits. With all we are able to do with biotechnology (grow hearts in petri dishes, stem cell research from skin cells), we'll be able to fix it. I honestly believe we will... but we need people to fuss about it! To say "make sure the food you're modifying is healthy!"... I hate the fact that it's not, because everyone thinks of GMF as horrible when it has such potential!

I'm not saying you shouldn't be afraid of pesticides/herbicides/growth hormones—those are bad. I'm also not saying that GMO can't be used to create large fruits/vegetables that have low nutrition value. I'm saying that it can ALSO be used to greatly benefit society by genetically modifying foods that ARE nutritious and healthy to fight cancer, liver disease etc.

There is no good testing, rush to implement more quickly, and will always be as long as we have monetary system. I believe whole idea of 'substancial equivalence' is a huge scam to simply make implementation quicker. I know there is a rap in town about solving powerty this way - but it's nonsense. So far gmo's CREATED more poverty (ie. India)

Re testing, GM foods have not been proved safe. A GM test on Soya on humans, found GM transfered to bactieria in the gut. This is a potential cause of new disease. GM soya fed to cows had an inintended consequence of 30 % higer fat in the milk. What other unintended consequences might their be ? In Britain, the superkarkets advise GM free, I hopethey are not lies. GM is linked to false pregnances in pigs.

Because Monsanto is one of the corporations that are trying to control all of the food crops of the world and make there Genetically modified seeds the only option for farmers big and small, they also poison the beef and dairy cows with growth hormones, almost all the milk you and your kids drink is full of Growth hormone.

And do you drink raw milk? Because BGH is denatured when milk is pasteurized.

Hey I hear they are selling seeds over the internet for crisis gardens. Guaranteed to be "genetically pure" seeds with no GM.
Why don't you buy a few dozen sets of seeds.
In the meantime tell us some REAL reasons why we would boycott Monsanto. Company has been central to the US' agricultural prosperity.

Well anyone who has any interrest in making THIS seem like it is some kind of scam, is not worth debating. He is either a part of some group with a hidden agenda, or just plain stupid, hey maybe he is both.. but thanks for the backup :) BTW Obama elected a former Monsanto guy to be head of something, don't remember what, but try digging into that!
