There weren't extra spawners, you just didn't break the ones you already knew about. As you already know from your own tests, spawners can spawn up to two blocks below and five to the side, including through the bedrock walls and in midair.

hey Etho ligting up the spawners DOES NOT disable them.. just stops them from spawning in that are with the light only way to DISABLE this is to destroy them or light every block area up within the 8x8 area around them.. thats why they were spawning in the air around the corners.. he constantly is "disabling them" by just putting a torch on them.. just get it over with a destroy them
