  • are you better at guitar now?

  • Epiphone Rules now! Gibson is a thing of the past!

  • I've had the guitar for about 4 years now, been playing for 7 years total and for whatever my advice is worth, I would recommend NOT getting this guitar. It looks great, ,and sounds decent, but there are drawbacks to it that make me regret not looking into first. For example, the guitar is very unbalanced, the headstock is heavy and gets tiring to hold up, it's very long and bumps into stuff a lot, and the neck is made of wood that slows down my hands in my opinion.

  • Hi, im getting this from a frind with a dimebucker in the bridge and an invader on the neck, for 300 bucks, then will it be goog for metal, will it lose the amazing clean tone it has?

    Thanks in advance

  • @tiralex Well I dont have a ton of experience with those pick ups but I would guess that it would possibly lose the clean but it would have a much gainer overdrive sound. I would try it out before I spent the money on it and make sure you play it through your main amp so you have a good idea of what it sounds like.

  • i hear this has wierd tuners, what are they like

  • @KyleAB5000 They are Steinberger ones, they are somewhat like the banjo style tuners on other firebirds. They basically go straight down and do not have the bend so the tuning key is away the headstock it is straight below the tuner. They are some of the best tuners I have ever used.

  • @Jrocknroller89

Thanks a bunch man, i was a little bit skeptical at first but now i can order my firebird with confidence :D (btw forgot to say, great reveiw ;) )

  • can it be used for metal?

  • @sgguitarfan7 Unless you want to immediately swap pick ups, no

  • @sgguitarfan7 It screams wuite good, but you need an amp that can generate a lot of gain, the guitar can't get much gain by itself with the humbuckers, but it's very versatile, the stock setup sounds quite good.

  • could you cover a few songs on this?

it kinda sounds like my squier thats all haha

    bit off putting :P

  • lick? more like pentatonic scale spam! lol good review though man, i like the idea of showing all the guitars tonesss! nice guitar too...gonna get myself one i reckon.

  • Is this guitar good for beginners?

  • @CianoKeano2010 I would say its a little expensive for a beginner guitar

  • @CianoKeano2010 Yes it would be a great beginners guitar. Its only about 350 any guitar cheaper than 400 bucks is going to be shitty quality and prob bad playabilty which will cause lots of folks to give up guitar out of frustration. When you learn how to play then go buy a american Fender Or Gibson and get into the solid woods, bone nut, good pick ups etc.

  • @eatthemoon13 Actually right now cheap guitar are really high quality my 100 dollar SG has awesome playability, even more so than my Firebird (this had to have the action adjusted and the truss rod just to get it able to play above the 10th fret). Set ups can do amazing things for cheap guitars.

  • @Jrocknroller89 Oh i know i was just just saying it would be a great guitar to learn on. After you get good move on up to gibson.prs whatever. Im just saying you buy hundred dollar guitar while learning tuners suck spen half your time messing with them also new player mostly have no idea about a set up.

  • @muddymermaid Where are the videos of you playing?

  • Hi,

I wanted to ask about the weight. I've had epiphone explorer and it was preety heavy, especially while stand-play. Is this guitar light or heavy compare to lp or even strato ?

  • @Notes90 Well its lighter than the old school LPs, bout the same as the new chambered LPs, but its way heavier than a strat

  • Telecasters r lame looking

  • pentatonic scales own!!!! that means you own!!!!

  • is this good for weezer, rhcp, jimi hendrix, foo fighters and stuff like that?

  • @letspla2 For Weezer and Foo Fighters yes, but for RHCP and Jimi, no a strat is definetly more what you are looking for.

  • @Jrocknroller89 thanks

  • @canaanfain777 Nope it does not youll have to purchase one, just as an FYI a Explorer Gigbag will work for the Firebird.

  • how long have you been playing btw nice pentatonic scale licks there

  • @elementos94 When I uploaded this I had been playing for 3 years when I uploaded the video. Thanks I appreciate it.

  • How would this sound for heavy fusion music?

  • @dyamiohshtcorriveau I would say if you left it stock no because these because do not drive as easily as my other guitars, if you would switch pickups it probably would

  • would this guitar work for funk??

  • @JerrysDerby It could but I wouldnt recommend it, I usually prefer something with single coils in it for funk. I would look at a Strat or whatever the G&L Strat copy is

  • I want to play alternative, grunge, rock, blues.bands like foo fighters nirvana sonic youth rolling stones the doors is this good for me

  • @MrGerone25 Depends on if you use distortion pedals or not, its great for the old stones and doors stuff, but when you get to the more distorted stuff it doesnt break up as early as my other guitars do on amp distortion but if you use pedals you should be fine.

  • Got one 2day Ebony one Great guitar

  • I play pop-rock,pop-punk,should i get this? or fender telecaster deluxe?

  • I love the look of the Firebird and I was looking to possibly buy one as a replacement to my old Strat. I am more into playing tracks from bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Foo Fighters, Nirvana and other bands similar to those listed. Do you think an Epiphone Firebird's sound would fit this, or should I be looking elsewhere?

    Thanks

  • @pupafredfred Well kind of hard to compare a Strat and Firebird, but it would be an awesome guitar for what you listed especially if you use pedals to get distortion. I use amps distortion and this output is less than my Strats or SGs (which I use primarily) so it doesnt drive as much with the standard setting but if I crank the gain up it can get pretty awesome distortion. I also love the cleans and broken clean this gets. So I highly recommend this

  • You always, always need to have an epiphone professionaly set-up. It makes a world of difference.

  • @beebman29 My advice learn how to do it yourself, it saves a ton of money, its something good to know especially if you plan to stay with guitar for a while. It can also make you money, I set up my friends guitars for cheaper than the store in town does and can do it way faster than the store can. The bonus is you can try different actions or truss rod settings. Also handy to know how to adjust intonation on the fly, like before a gig or recording session.

  • @beebman29 Almost any guitar you buy you need to have set up, especially if its from an online retailer, think of how much temp and pressure change you would get taking one from Tennesse to California in a nonclimate controlled truck. If you get it at a music store it should be already set up but to cut costs some stores are not doing that anymore.

  • My firebird studio isnt that red....mines sorta more maroon.....WHY IS THAT?

  • @thisisobviously I have noticed that a lot and I sometimes wonder whether the paint isnt mixed properly so the stuff on top is more red and the bottom is darker. Or it could be the wood underneath and how light or dark it is. My final thought is that your guitar was more porous and sucked up more paint than mine. Or as a bunch of people on here say, its Epiphones lack of quality control.

  • @Jrocknroller89 Oh well i dont mind mine being darker than others. But mine had a blemish near the neck pickup when i opened it from the box that keeps its from being perfect. Either way its a bloody fine guitar and i love the tuners. At least my knobs arent falling off like i hear that others are having.

  • @thisisobviously It is kind of net to have that guitar that is different from everyone elses. Perfect guitars are nice but they dont have as much mojo as a dinged one. I still have a really hard time believing the hardware is that inconsistent from guitar to guitar. The funny part is Epi doesnt manufacture there own knobs or toggle switches, I really hope they dont expect someone to sit and play every guitar to make sure its ok.

  • i have this guitar. It sounds awsome but has some shitty hardware. The knobs on mine cracked and ive had to replace two toggle switches already, and the bottom e tuning peg busted and had to buy a new one.

  • @caseyjones67 Actually this guitar has awesome hardware even better than my Gibsons. It has Steinberger locking Tuners which are awesome if they werent so expensive I would have them on all of mine. I have never had any issue with the toggle switch on this. It almost sounds like maybe a lead is bad or the soldering wasnt right because the second toggle should have cured the problem if it was the switch.

  • @caseyjones67 I absolutely agree with you. I've got one knobs fallen off, cracked knobs as well. And I have the exact same problem with the high e tuning peg. I bought this guitar a good couple of years ago and knew nothing about guitars! (it just looked so nice, and I still think it does). In terms of hardware for me it's not good at all. Maybe they're just incredible inconsistent...Or maybe as "Jrocknroller89" stated, Epiphone and Gibson overall are just overrated and overpriced. Go for Fender

  • Your not to bad.

But idk why people buy epi's when you can just save up your money more and buy Gibson. The Gibson firebirds are extremely better quality and the neck thru construction makes there sustain incredible.

Your good at reviewing, keep it up dude.

  • @snicklefritzlefizzle Actually this is neck through and I do like Gibsons better but I would be way more worried to gig with an expensive Gibson than this. Thanks for the support its good to hear kind words once and a while

  • @Jrocknroller89 are you sure man? look it up, cause 99.9 percent certain its not neck thru. in any event it still sounds good though. :)

  • @snicklefritzlefizzle Ok I was wrong its a set neck but I sustains longer than my thru necks so I cant complain

  • Man! thats my Dream Guitar your holding!! i wish i could have one of that!:) nice choice:)

  • hey does the neck drop at all when not holding it up yourself?

  • @andykfoo nope

  • Mclovin?

  • I just got this guitar today for Christmas...i was quite sceptical at first as it was not an official Gibson. But fuck me, its beautiful sounding...from a clean sound to a distorted sound its bloody brilliant. I will never look down on Epiphone again!

  • @reniisgod Ya a lot of people doubt Epiphone but they are a very legit brand

  • @Jrocknroller89 why would anyone ever doubt epiphone? they're made and certified copys made through the presses used by gibson.

  • @mstrkrftjr I have had tons of people doubt my Epis because they dont say Gibson ( they are usually uneducated f****s) its really sad that people are that brand oriented

  • @Jrocknroller89 gibsons parts for the most part are made in china, shipped to the states and assembled by americans, and jacked up to a $2000 price tag,(makes sense american labour is more expensive) while epiphone for the most part except for their custom shops are made and assembled in china and sold to the consumer for a far more reasonable price. these guitars go through the same presses and ideally the same company, but it's all about the name on the top of the headstock.

  • Comment removed

  • @mstrkrftjr epiphones aren't bad guitars but i'm pretty worried for your sake if you can't tell that gibsons are better quality just by simply playing them... i have epis and gibsons and that "it's all about the name on the headstock" thing is pretty stupid from my experience of owning a few of each.

also... regarding gibsons being "made in china" and going "through the same presses" - please cite your sources... i doubt they are reliable sources..

  • @Blompcube i never said they werent good guitars, i said you get what you pay for, a cheap guitar assembled with cheap asian components made by asians for 3 cents an hour, while gibson masterbuilds each by hand and there is clearly different components in a gibson along with the wood made to build the guitar itself. before you cite yourself as a "know it all" cite your own sources and learn to not take every word literally and out of context.

  • @mstrkrftjr that's not what you said before.. you said that gibson parts are made in china and shipped to america to be assembled there, now you're saying they build each guitar by hand.

what i meant was, i'm not saying epis are bad quality - but you should be able to tell gibsons are better quality, and the difference wouldn't exist if they were the same thing only assembled in the US, which is kinda what your first comment implied.

but how exactly did i cite myself as a know-it-all?

  • i said their parts for the most part are assembled nowhere near north america, gibson bought out epiphone in the 50's because the epiphone archtops were an even higher quality to those gibson were making at the time. after gibson purchased epiphone it began to make licensed copys of gibsons but were far cheaper instruments with far cheaper components made to compete with fenders squier company, you telling me my sources (history) are wrong = ignorant.

  • @mstrkrftjr so how does gibson owning epiphone and epiphone making licensed copies (which i was well aware of, by the way) have anything to do with the first thing i replied to? the sources i suggested you cite were related to you saying that gibson and epiphone are put through the same presses, and then the parts are shipped to america for gibson to assemble there.

and when did i tell you you were wrong about gibson owning epiphone? i think you're completely misunderstanding every word i type.

  • i said the same branded presses, since their both owned by the same company. you havent acknowledged that gibson does import their components, which they do and have them built in the us. you dont seem to read what im writing before your already replying to me. your video "demos" on every one you say " dont judge me by my playing just showing the guitar" why not spend your time playing and practicing and get better. you desperately need it for the money your parents spent on those guitars.

  • @Blompcube i said they use the same branded presses.. you seem to like to reply to my comments before reading them. you still havent acknowledged that gibson imports their components, from outside north america which they then build in the states for a huge mark up. i never said epis were inferior, i have an epi casino and it plays better than my LP standard or my American Strat. instead of making excuses in your videos for why you suck, why not spend more time practicing. plz dont reply again.

  • @mstrkrftjr personal attacks? grow up. i don't care if you think i "suck" - i take constructive criticism on board, if you have anything worthwhile to offer. why did you block me from your channel, though? you got something to hide? 'plz dont reply again' won't work.

that's what i've been referring to all along though - i'm not going to acknowledge that gibson imports their components until you show me some decent evidence of it. your previous replies have all been completely unrelated to that.

  • @Blompcube What he said is not true, but it's not that far from reality either. I bought a firebird studio a while ago, it sounds good, but it's definetely not great. The knobs for volume and tone fell off, etc. The sound is decent, though, as well as the neck and finish of the wood. Still, i have tried a few "cheap" gibsons, and i tell you, unless you go over 1500$ you won't get anything special. A Les paul 300$ more expensive produced a really similar sound to my firebird.

  • @machone7I i don't really know what exactly you're replying to here, but that seems reasonable enough.

the low end gibsons aren't all that different from the higher end ones until you get to the custom shop, it's mostly cosmetic differences, although i think the quality control is a lot looser too, there seems to be a lot of iffy ones around. my LP studio is very good, but the only other good one i've played was one from the same batch belonging to a friend of mine.

  • Is this a firebird studio WC guitar?

  • @MikeyDelegato Nope no pedals are on put it is ran through my entire pedal board so that probably does suck some tone away. Ya I got it all work out now so the switch is good. I have never noticed that it is top heavy even the day I bought it I didnt notice it being super heavy.

  • @MikeyDelegato There is quite a bit of drive of this amp and the mic on the webcam is terrible and doesnt pick it up well at all so it makes it sound terrible. I really appreciate the compliment seems like so few people on here are positive. The sustain is like the Les Paul on Spinal tap you can grab a bite to eat and it will still be ringing.

  • Are these the same pickups that are in the epiphone dot archtop?

  • @jakedtheband I dont believe so the Firebirds are marketed Alnico Classic and Classic plus on the Gibson site and the Dot is marketed as just humbuckers. If you go to the Gibson site and search Dot and firebird and scroll through the results and y youll find it.

  • Omg this again.... same question as in some other video... how the fuck do people with such weak ass playing skills end up with a bunch of kick-ass guitars? And as I've read in a comment of yours, you have several Gibsons as well.. how?

  • @imixers Well first off I do not like the negativity you and secondly if you are going to judge why dont you post some videos of you playing? Yes I have 2 Gibsons, 2 Epiphone, plus some other off brand guitars and basses, plus a 67 fender Princeton and a 73 Super Reverb and you know how, I play gigs and get paid for playing.

  • @Jrocknroller89 You get payed for playing? Im not trying to be an ass but I know better guitarists than you, far better, who struggle to find gigs. And also having excellent guitars does not make you a good guitarist.

  • @MrPocketGuitar Im not saying Im good far from it and here finding gigs is very easy.

  • Im looking at two different guitars, I play stuff that sounds like early Pearl Jam etc. Should I buy this or a Epiphone Explorer? I'm really stuck :/

  • is this like a les paul some kind of 'heavy' guitar, i need a guitar with much sustain

  • @123marijn321 Well you found it then

  • omg that has to be one of the most ''avrage'' sounding guitars I've ever heard. It's nice but it's so normal and boaring.

  • @BbRocks08 you nailed it, its not bad its not holy grail it just yes prolly the best description of this guitar

  • Comment removed

  • Would you recomend this guitar for someone playing punk rock?

  • @carlosalvz No i would not I would recommend something more along lines of one of my SGs (which reviews are posted on here) these pick ups do dont have the punchiness you would require

  • @Jrocknroller89 if the pick ups are the problem would changing its pick ups help

  • @carlosalvz For me no, for you yes. But the hassle of finding good PUPs, having them installed, plus the cost would make this cost for than any of my guitars (including the Gibsons). If you like the body shape check out an Epi Explorer they have stronger pickups and come in a Korina and Goth finish.

  • @carlosalvz

of course you can play it with a firebird...

you can play punk with an BIG 'n' FAT ES too. Epiphone The Dot for example > 220€

Actualy you need a good amp.

  • What colour is it?

I mean on some photos the worn cherry looks like yours and sometimes it looks more faded!

    So are their differences?

  • @Jackalofhighwater this is the faded cherry and i believe there are different faded colors but im not sure. I know there are some huge variations in the faded cherrys color though

  • @Jrocknroller89 Ok thanks =D I will take care next time I look up the firebird! There aren't any shops round here that deal with Firebirds so internet is my only choice =S. Would you recomend this guitar? Or do you have other ones you prefer? (I like Gibson shapes btw) And what are the advantages and disadvantages of this guitar?

  • @Jackalofhighwater I do recommend this guitar if you play music with less drive similiar to skynyrd but for high gain stuff a definite no. I actually prefer my Tele or my Faded SG to this one and for contradicting reasons. The advantages of it is its shock value not a lot of people own these where I live and its not a common guitar so it gets people to see you disadvantages are this thing is long it balances ok but finding a gig bag sucks (but explorer ones work)

  • I'm getting one not big on the color Worn Cherry bu I love Firebirds.

  • I love this guitar!

  • just got my worn cherry firebird today, effin incredible uuitar. its so weird and exotic, I LOvE IT!

  • I don't know if you experienced this, but a played around with several of these at a local shop, and when I turned the volume and tone to 10 on the bridge I experienced quite the unique, almost single coil, break up. It sounded like an over wound pickup, but I was told that the heavy solid bodies like this tend to do that. I'm more inclined to believe I may have just passed up a Holy Grail of humbuckers, care to comment? What's your experience been like at full blast?

  • @rootman1987 Ive never noticed it sounding like a single coil or over wound to me I will say that it has less output than my other guitar and if I remember right I think the output is really close to my strat with Texas Specials in it. So that may be where you get the idea of a single coil sound. Ive never heard about heavy solid bodies sounding overwound. To me it sounds like a salesman trying to make a pitch. Heavy solid bodied guitars would include Les Pauls, Explorers, Telecasters,

  • @rootman1987 (SGs and Strats would not be included because of the weight reduction and body contouring). Ive never heard of someone buying an LP for its single coil break up.

  • @rootman1987 And it being heavy has nothing to do with it being overwound. That is just how many times the wire wraps around the magnet and sometimes pick ups get the few more wraps than they are supposed to and thats an overwound pick up. As far as my experience on ten it has a nice break up that is very smooth and not in your face like my other guitars. Sorry this is in three parts youtube didnt like my long winded one.

  • would it be good for heavy dethmetal type music?

  • @cmist12 no unless you want to swap pickups for EMGs or or something with way more output I would recommend looking at an Explorer, SG, or something of that sort

  • I had one of those, it wouldn't stay in tune for more than a minute

  • Did you have the Steinberger locking tuners cause I have a hard time believing that they untune easily I have taken this guitar through temperture changes and it is never more than a few ticks from tuned

  • i am looking either good a cheap guitar (not one that looks like a strat i already have a squire strat) or a good cheap bass thanks a lot

  • Actually take a look at my SG G310 Review, I bought that for 125 bucks off ebay and I still use it along with this and my Gibsons. As far as basses go just watch classified adds and craigslist. I have two basses that I paid 30 bucks fors and they do a good job and my sis bought an Epi bass new for 200 that was decent but not great.

  • im gonna buy a lefty firebird and make for righty so it will look like a fender jaguar

  • I must have this guitar ;)

Maybe in future i bought Gibson Firebird V.

  • is it big?

  • Ya it is way longer than any other guitar i have played, its comparable to a bass

  • Okey, thanks, I'm tall so I liked to know.

  • this guitar is awesome!

  • no its a epi..

  • Well it is just an opinion

  • i found a 94 firebird, i think it sounds better than this... my opinion

  • @123vaw123 Is it a Gibson because you really cant compare Gibson and Epiphone

  • i am looking to get a fire bird my budget is £300 to £1000 would you recomend just geting the epiphone or do you think i sould try and go for the gibson if i can find a cheep one

  • @lexjuniordrummer well i would say get a gibson if u can but the Epi is a good guitar for the money

  • my budget is £260 but i want one of these guitars can i find them anywhere cheaper than £260

  • Any suggestions on a large solid body (close to an acoustic size)? I still sort of want an electric, but acoustic electric is fine.......and my budget only goes up to about $400

  • There arent many solidbodies that are big as acoustics but semi hollow bodies are much closer in size to an acoustic . The problem I have come across with semihollow bodies is they have a high tendency to feedback. I have recently begun to look at some just to help cover the spectrum of tones and Gretsch makes some fairly affordable semihollow and solid bodies. Plus you have the Gibson and Epi ES lines. Fender also has semihollow bodies that are decent

  • This past week I played some Ibanez semihollow bodies and they have a nice White Falcon copy for I believe just above 400.

  • I have gigantic fingers, and my strat's frets are way too small (my A chord sounds weird). Is it true that the Firebird has larger frets?

  • Actually Gibson (and Epis) have a fret scale of 24.75 and Fender has a longer fret scale of 25.5 so actually its smaller than a strat

  • J - I bought one of these "Custom Shop"

Birds on Ebay about 6 mos ago, the Alinico's were swapped out with P90's.

This is now the master of sustain. Very heavy. With a Boss distortion unit it rocks

and with no effects, it's like an American

Strat. It's my most favorite guitar to play.

You never want to put her down. Also, it has the Steinberger tuners.

  • Hey, isn't it AC/DC discography poster on the wall? ;P Oh, by the way - nice playing, and nice guitar, i'm thinking, about buying one ;)

  • do you recommend this guitar? coz im looking for an affordable good guitar, and this 1 seems awesome to me, i love the sound it makes and the shape

  • Ya this is a great guitar has great tuners, great tone, and get just about any tone you want out of it

  • ok :)

  • would i look embarrased playing this if im 13 and im 4'11?

  • Ya you might this guitar is at least 6 inches longer than my others and it also rivals my basses length. But image isnt everything if you like the sound and the feel dont worry what it looks like.

  • Comment removed

  • What's the comfort level on that guitar? From a scale of 1/10, what would you rate it?

  • I would give it a 10. It may look uncomfortable because of its weird shape and being really long but it actually feels pretty good and has a good balance to it.

  • @bloozyrocker - It's about a five. It's neck heavy.

  • This!!!

You should show the back of the guitar in the next review

  • This or an epi les paul?

  • Both are good it just depends on what you like.

  • what's better all round

  • I like the firebird better its not quite as heavy as the LP is, but they both have their strong points and weak points my best advice is to go play both of them and see which one you like better

  • thanks

  • @bloozyrocker I have both I prefer this with new P90's.
