They ran like rabbits? Who, the SS Hitler Jugend who were all but wiped out? The SS Florian Geyer in Budapest who were wiped out, the Army Group North who stayed in the Kurland pocket until the very end. Who ran like rabbits? At the battle of Kursk which division ran like rabbits, better learn some history my boy, I am not supporting the Nazi regime, but when you make unsubstantiated and blatantly wrong statements, it might help to read an unbiased history book now and then.

@brentano2277 Not all were 'wiped out,' only the ones foolish enough to confront the Red Army. The rest ran. Gross Deutschland ran across Courland and a mish-mash of Germans ran from Normandy, but were stopped at Falaise. Why criticize an enemy who works hard to achieve air superiority? That is what war is about. The Nazis started the war with the greatest army ever seen and total airpower over Europe and Russia. Superior numbers killed them. Only fools would fight the US and Russia at once!

Gross Deutschland did not run across Germany , and if they did , it was to get to France.Army Group North stayed in Courland until the bitter end AND did not surrender until the bitter end. The suggestion is that the Germans were cowards, but cowards do not fight against overwhelming odds for 6 years. By all means feel free to chastise Germans for all sorts of issues, but do not suggest that in the generality they were cowards.

@brentano2277 Most of Gross Deutschland surrendered in the West-controlled part(s) of Germany. Himmler fled to the west. Goering was captured by the Americans. The odds did not become 'overwhelming' until the end of 1942, after the Nazis realized they had bit off more than they could chew in USSR. You tell me, then: where did they go when they fled from Russia? From NAfrica?

It was impossible for Germany to win the war once the US joined in.It was also not possible for Germany to surrender as the allies had already decided that only unconditional surrender would be considered.A situation that was not feasible given the situation in the East.The behaviour of both Russians and Germans made unconditional surrender impossible.

@brentano2277 Russians had the right to behave any way they wanted when surprise-attacked by hate-motivated barbarians. Nazis did 'surrender' in many places: Stalingrad, Kursk, Hungary, Romania, Poland, etc. Those who didn't surrender died. No one would recognize that a Nazi regime should be left in power, thus unconditional surrender plans. It is not 'brave' to rely on crackpot ideology to think it will make you win against an opponent greatly stronger than you. Instead, it is toolish.

@brentano2277 I don't give a hoot about Russia, but they had a treaty with the Nazis and in fact didn't see the invasion coming. They were in Poland after the Nazis gave them E. Poland. What about Czechoslovokia, Austria, the Balkans and Greece? Russia produced Tolstoy, Dostoievski Checkhov and Pavlov, so not all were backward.

@vinegaroon1 Czechoslovakia could have been avoided if common sense had prevailed at Versaille, Austria (or the Danubean Germans), were mostly in favour of the Anschluss, not after the war of course and Greece was about bailing out the Italians. Also I'm not suggesting all Russians were/are backward, but the non backward ones knew what a bath and shower looked like, unlike the Russian heroes who liberated and raped Berlin, and had never seen a toilet before or a shower or soap.

@brentano2277 Being 'in favor' of a foreign country invading your own land is the mark of a fool, and not all Austrians favored the Anschluss. For whatever reason the Nazis attacked and occupied Greece ( and the Balkans.) The Nazis acted like wild animals in Russia and got paid back in their own coin, just as they did for bombing London, etc. It has been nice discussing this, but I don't think either of us can change the other's views. You may have the last word.

The Allied High Command thought that Caen would fall in one or two days after the D-day (some generals even said during the D-day itself). But with the 12 SS Panzer Division "Hitlerjugend" the battle for that city would last more than a month. The allied casualties were so high they actually feared that they would run out of reserves. The 12 SS also suffered some of the highest losses in the entire german army. After Falaise, it was almost destroyed as a unit. Brave lads that fought brilliantly.

@brentano2277 They surrendered in droves and masses or they ran. The Nazis had air superiority until 1943. You can respect the SS all you want. They put children in camps and starved them and conducted 'medical experiments' on them. You call that 'brave?' (The Waffen SS fought at the front so the camps could function.) They ran like rabbits from Kursk, Stalingrad, Hungary, Falaise, Italy and Fritches Haff. When they met somebody who fought back, they died or fled.
