  • You know I don't think you've talked about 'The Last House on the Left' before have you Mark? Only every other review (regardless of film or genre!).

It needs to go on his tombstone:

Last House on the Left - cuts doubled because of me.

  • The only thing I liked about this remake was Sara Paxton.

  • The original Last House on the Left was very good. I haven't seen the remake.

  • the original film was horrible and badly made and never needed to be remade.

why are we surprised the remake sucked??

  • shit film...original and remake

  • That's quite a significant cranium over the good doctors left shoulder. I couldn't stop looking at it.

  • remakes - made by pricks, for pricks.

  • I have the original of LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT on DVD, but stopped watching it cos could not understand what they were saying. The quality of the audio is poor - Does anyone know where I can get a transcript of this film? - The DVD does not have subtitles

  • Hated the remake, total crap

  • this is a really good remake, better than the original which I wasn't that impressed with.I think the message of the film(violence breeds violence)comes through more effectively in this than the original aswell.

  • I wonder if Mark stuck one in the girl at the side, bet he has.

  • i'm not from england and so i'm confused about the cutting of films. does england cut movies only for the cinema or do they actually ban films such as last house from being distributed as well?

  • @glitchesandglitter We have something called the "Obscene Publications Act". This is a law which says that anything likely to corrupt an individual is illegal. All films must be passed by the BBFC as being legal, meaning they are not obscene (or that they don't contain illegal materials). In the late 70's and early 80's the government started a series of "witch hunts" of various films which they thought could be obscene. Any film found to be in breach of the Act was banned from being sold ...

  • @glitchesandglitter ...contd: or shown in the UK. Films like Cannibal Holocaust and Last house on the Left were on the list of films which were banned. A list was drawn up of 39 films which were banned and which it was a crime to distribute. A further 33 films appeared on the list but were eventually removed. The list became known as the "Video Nasties" list. Nowadys the BBFC are a little more relaxed with their classifications and we get a wide range of cinema. Hope this helps.

  • @glitchesandglitter we see an edited version in the cinema that the BBFC feel is appropriate. when the dvd comes out the cut scenes are very often in the bonus secion of th disc. but they are never shown on TV.

  • I like the fact that the BBFC doubled the cuts after Kermode's evidence

  • I think the biggest improvement over the remake is the parents are played by better actors in the remake. Tony Goldwyn's performance while he's operating on his own daughter is heartbreaking. And in the remake, the violence coming from the parents is more realized: they're isolated and they have to save their daughter. Henceforth, they have to fight in order to escape.....and yeah, the microwave scene is really very silly.

  • I think this guy is great too but something about what he's saying makes no sense. If the 1972 original is such a bad film, so poorly made... how can it be so effective at making the viewer uncomfortable? And, how can it be important to history? I completely disagree with him. I think the film is a masterpiece and works very well no matter how you view it. Either as, A) fully dedicated to its' message about violence, or B) using the art film quality of the scenes of horror just to freak us out.

  • I wish it were true that they take all 70s movies and remade them. I wanna see a remake of The Private Life os Sherlock Holmes.

  • I've seen the original & it was dreadful. Remakes are extremely rarely as good...

  • Yea he describes it well: that remake was pointless. Because if you cut the edges off the original, you lose the point of what this is about. Of course modern filmakers and studios want to make money....

  • So, here's the thing. I didn't know about the details of this film. I just knew that it was a thriller before renting it.

I also knew that my girlfriend likes thrillers. So I rented it for date night in---You guys see where this is going, right?

Let's just say that after that rape scene...there was no nookie for me that evening.

  • your reviews are informative and honest with a hint of irony..

  • A really great and informative movie review, I totally agree with your critical observations sir.

  • what happened to the review of terminator salvation?

  • I was wondering this, myself. They either decided not to show it, because it would be too difficult to edit (that election coverage) or the Beeb were paid off by the distributor...

either way sucks! Terminator Salvation has put me off going to the cinema for the forseeable future!

  • This is a review of LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What the bleedin hell has Terminator got to do with anything?

  • I see what you mean in terms of the edits they would have made, but then again the video review of Transformers used the trailer footage to hide the cuts.

Though dude, support the theatres! Otherwise greats like Waltz with Bashir an all won't get the notice they deserve.

  • I can see what you are saying, but I just have no interest in seeing any of the big, hyped up films anymore. There's no way in hell I'm wasting money on Transformers 2! The only film I can think of that I really want to see this year is The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.

  • Good point on Parnassus :)

TF2 looks pretty failsome, and judging by early reviews, it looks to dangle lower than the wrecking ball bollocks that the movie's biggest robot has on display (seriously, robo balls) lol

  • Optimus Prime has a set of nads on him this time?...

    gee wiz!

And here's me thinking the trailer looks more dark and serious than the first film...

  • i love dr kermode. i have my BA in english and film studies, and his reviews are so great, that im considering going back to get my masters bc of him.
